  1. ST Trivia June 2009

Thank you very much, Swat Medic! I would have gotten a moderate number of these, had I been able to type quickly enough; probably around 15 or so. But those include the ones where the answer isn't in my head immediately. Not including those, I would maybe get 5. Anyways, it sounds like a missed a good time! I'll be at the next one, what would that be, December?
  2. ST Trivia June 2009

Yeah, my friend and I both missed it. School let out late because of a stupid pep rally. I could've at least logged on from my phone or something. Trivia would have been sooo much more fun than watching 8th graders play volleyball. But anyway... If you have any questions written down (I assume that's what you did), I would like to hear some. Just to see how I would have done. Can you PM some of them to me pretty-please? Sorry I couldn't make it. Not my fault.
  3. Guess that City - American Version

I think that clue about the onion was too much of a giveaway. I'm not even from the southeast/Deep South; whatever you call it, but I got it almost immediately. Two words come to mind when I think of onions, leek and ---. And crying. So I got a pretty quick hunch that --- was the name of a city in the state of *** which I consider the center of the deep south. I'm not going to post the city name, because then I have to post a city myself. It's 9:30 at night, and I have final exams tomorrow, so I should probably go to bed. Good night! If no one's gotten it by tomorrow afternoon, I'll post. PS. the dashes replace the city's name and the asterisks are the state name. I didn't want to give any clues.
  4. How many "ranks" are there on ST?

Prefect: -a person appointed to any of various positions of command, authority, or superintendence, as a chief magistrate in ancient Rome or the chief administrative official of a department of France or Italy -a praeposter -In the Greek and Roman Catholic churches, a title of certain dignitaries below the rank of bishop Alright. Really, everything's a word in some language with some meaning. I don't know if this is what you really meant when supposedly making a typo. A praeposter(prefect) hitchhiker? That would be a English boy with authority over other students that probably hitchhikes his way to school. Something doesn't add up. Yes, if you want to consider this a win for yourself, I'll humor you. Prefect is a word. Though it's not common, especially not here in America. I don't think I can argue with you. So I won't. But still, I hope I've helped by pointing out a possible error. Though it seems pretty clear to me. Prefect Hitchhikers Rule!
  5. How many "ranks" are there on ST?

I just saw this on a recent post by bigthing. I had this rank for a single post way back in April, but I failed to notice the spelling of "Perfect". I think it's time to start finger pointing on who made such an error. Nonetheless, I even checked and in some places of the world, hitchhiker is two seperate words. So it could be a doubly-fail! Oh, how I make myself laugh. But seriously, someone really should fix the typo. OCD people hate this.
  6. Problem with Lot Editor/gmax Bat Tool

Well, I'm still convinced it's something to do with texturing or using vertexes. I use the "edit" menu that lets you move single points every once in a while. Though it doesn't normally fail that way, it has failed before. EG deleting the rest of the model, screwing up all the textures, or good ol' messing itself up. If you've been using that tool to drag a single point (I forget its name- sorry), that could be the problem. But I sort of doubt it. I'm not a Gmax mechanic. It could also be texturing if you messed with the W mapping. If you read the Omnibus tutorial, you know that's a big no-no. I also give that a slim chance of that being the problem. When in doubt, ask Jasoncw. 6/17/09: I told you Jason would solve the problem! Well, my responses sucked. I knew about merging, too. Ah well.
  7. Problem with Lot Editor/gmax Bat Tool

I say this almost sarcastically: UVW Map? Any BATer who textures knows that certain objects need a UVW Map to correctly render. I just recently made this mistake with a roof and it was invisible in Perspective mode and was a brown rectangle in render mode. It looks somewhat similar to your problem. I don't know your skills, but if you haven't applied a UVW Map Modifier, I would try that. But I'm reluctant to help you because you're not a Red Sox fan.
  8. Guess that City - American Version

Billings, Montana! I actually knew the answer last night but was too lazy to upload a picture to Imageshack at 9:30PM. I don't know how, but I got it on the third try. I think I just looked for the smallest city in Google Maps that still was marked with a red dot. But I had suspected it was in the "Great American Desert". Aaaaaaanyways... Oh! Darnit! The d from the city label didn't disappear! What a strange way for you to get a hint! Yes, the city ends with a "d", wise guys. This city isn't small, but it should be relatively difficult. Best of luck!
  9. ST Trivia June 2009

I'm just going to post this linkie, it should have all the times around the world that the trivia contest starts. If you're really bad with time zones- I just realized there are 4 US time zones so I can sympathize. Also, my signature has an advertisement for trivia. I got my friend to put an advertisement in his signature, too, but he doesn't post much. I'll see if I can rally some more support by Friday.
  10. How do you ANY demand for commercial?

Taxes always work, if you're desperate you can put them at 5% or less. I'm an okay player so that's my workaround for commercial demand. Also, to get demand in a certain city, make sure it has a lower tax rate than the rest of the region. Assuming you have more than one city. Hope this helps.
  11. ST Trivia June 2009

Huh? I thought we were already aiming for next Friday? Ah nonetheless, I can be there next week. School lets out that day at 11:30 so I can be on my computer by trivia time (it would be 1:00 EDT). Hope to see a good turnout! Now I just have to learn to type better. That'll probably ruin my chances. Darn.
  12. Experts probe deadly Mexico flu

If anyone's interested, I've crunched the numbers and swine flu accounts for 0.0000000235% of the world's deaths. And no, those zeros aren't for show, that's the real number. And to put it in perspective, you're three times more likely to die in a shark attack over the next 20 years (but any sensible person knows that's not a likely chance), and you have a 0.000297% chance of dying in any natural disaster. So you're at least 10,000 times more likely to die from a natural disaster than swine flu. I don't know how worried anyone else is, but that should clear up how this has been blown way out of scale by the media. I like statistics. Can ya blame me? But yeah! That's my post #100!
  13. Guess that City - American Version

Alright, I sorta regretted that post, had it been a spoiler, but I see it wasn't. So, on with the game. One of my cousins went to Cincinatti for a summer or two or whatever it would be. But Cincinatti isn't mainly known for its college, so I guess I'll rule that out. For now. But some of the other major cities have colleges, too. Like Toledo, or Columbus, right? And I seem to recall some other college my cousin mentioned. But I forget what it is. I don't think I'll look it up this early in the game, but I'll probably remember soon. P.S. Is this the first city where the roads aren't in a North-South/ East-West grid? I never got why the roads are almost always aligned like that.
  14. Guess that City - American Version

I'M BACK! Hmmm... let's see what we've got here... Well, that trees there look a lot like the trees from the Bucyrus picture posted by Muck308 about a month or so back. And, you're from Ohio. That seems to match up to me... but I guess it's not much of a geographically educated guess, but so what. I'll see what I can find, but for anyone else who's guessing: SPOILER ALERT: IT'S (PROBABLY) IN OHIO! Great to be back this thread.
  15. 3-lane One-Way Street

Well, it's almost obvious that it's Photoshopped to some degree. Deny it all you want, the NWM does exist and I'm almost certain it'll be out not too long from now as a suitable download. I've never tried it, but it must mess with the intersections (that looks the most photoshopped part, don't you see the fill bucket effect?), and that was photoshopped. I think this mod is well worth a wait, but we'll have to see.
  16. Own Content?

It seems like you're not sure about a few of these downloads. They work fine for me and I got them from SC4Devotion. Well, a friend did, but it works, nonetheless. Here's the linkie. Trust me, Gmax may look difficult and intimidating, but if I can figure it out, you can. Making your own content can usually be done in less than a week in simple models, but up to 4 weeks (in my case) for super-complex models. Glad to help. PS Sorry tungston if you feel like I'm stealing your thunder.
  17. Guess that City - American Version

Oh, yes it's good to see someone has posted instead of letting this thread die a slow and painful death. *Ahem* *Clears throat* Well, by the looks of the picture it could be just about anywhere. Looks like a dry continental climate found in the Great Plains... I'm going to say it's Lincoln, NE, but that's just a guess to get this next round started. The lack of urban area makes me think this won't be the easiest one, as well as the lack of any river or water. (Also I saw the file name says salemor [salem, OR], but from the looks of the sattellite pictures, it's not Salem, Oregon. But correct me if I'm wrong. It isn't Salem, is it?)
  18. You're saying that you download regions from the STEX, and they end up coming out as a green, blank, waterless, flat piece of land? If you're trying to edit the size of your cities with the paint program or other photo editing software, it may be the problem. The bitmaps must be sensitive or something, I'm not too sure, but when I try to edit my bitmaps, I get a similar problem. Any edited city tiles become suspiciously flat. If the problem is another, human error, or a glitch, some experts here on ST can solve it, I'm sure.
  19. Moscow Rising

I remember doing a report on Moscow for school just a few months ago! It may not be the perfect city, but I wish I lived there. So they're remaking the city, huh? What about the Kremlin, is changing to democracy hard enough? No, I kid, it really is a great city. Russia is too much of a Soviet Union stereotype as most Westerners see it... just a question, are a lot of the replaced buildings from the Soviet era?
  20. Oceanport- Where the Cool People want to Live!

Hey, my friend's been through Rockford a bunch of of times when visiting the Midwest! I hope the move is/was great! Just don't break your computer. That would suck. Did the people in Oceanport win the nomination for the Simlympics? I hope so... Catch you later, yessir!
  21. Finally, some news we can use! How to find a plane on the bottom of the ocean! Now I'm wondering if people click that, thinking it's a how-to article... Alas, Wikipedia has declared all the passengers perished, and I doubt anyone disagrees with me. It's a shame, and I hope it wasn't caused by a stupid mistake by Air France. Some things are unavoidable, but some can be avoided, but aren't. Like airplane accidents. It's just terrible. But now authorities are wondering about terrorism being linked to the crash! Now you're just trying to make everyone scared about air travel! I heard there was a bomb threat on the Rio de Janero (I don't think I spelled that right) route, one of several airports get every year, so now they're investigating that. Really? Do you have to make this information public? I'm sure I'll get criticized for this, but I'm happy with the lie. I hope this wasn't terrorism, but it's a developing story, we'll have to wait and see.
  22. Well, some Brazilian authorities found debris in the area from what I've heard, so I guess it's only a matter of time before we find out the probably sad news of what happened to the plane. Assuming it's true, the plane certainly went down; it's not a conspiracy. I'm still thinking of what could be the trigger. An explosion seems the most likely, from lightning, I don't know. We'll just have to see if they find the black boxes, but I doubt there were any survivors. www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,524263,00.html
  23. This story reminded me of the "Mary Celeste", or whatever it's called, that ship that simply never showed up in port back in the 1800s. Have they ruled out the Bermuda Triangle? Yeah, most likely. I don't know too much about planes, but they all should have a tracker on them. I'm not sure if Brazil Air can use it, though, because the last checkin, communication, and moments on Brazilian radar, were all around 2 AM. So now the question is, what might have happened in the 1:14 between leaving Brazilian radar and the electrical fault? The tracker would help a lot in the investigation, so I'm going to go on Google Maps to see where the plane probably went down. Maybe it was within a Liberian radar's range. No luck, the plane looks to be out of almost all radar ranges when it supposedly went down. This is about where it was placed:
  24. North Korea conducts nuclear test

I'm not worried about much of anything. I'm sure a couple of South Koreans and Japanese (paranoids) are building bunkers, but North Korea must be making some demand, not just wanting to take over the world. Would anyone like to enlighten me about what a communist nation could want? The military channels all the goods, so I don't see a growth opportunity for medicines or building materials, and there isn't much else to offer. I seem to recall just a year ago, N Korea demanded power in return of cutting the budget for nuclear research. Yes, that's power as in electricity, just to clarify. So much for that. Time to ask Uncle Sam for some more? I just don't get which lies to focus on. Is North Korea getting the power they need? Will they be making demands anytime soon? Are they really using these warheads for defense? Especially near the DMZ? Is Kim Jong completly ignoring Hitler's example of what happens when you try to take over the world? Find out on the next episode of liberal media newscasts!

There's an Omnibus tutorial right here about getting snow effects. You don't need to follow all of the steps, I'd imagine step 5 just creates rain effects. It's a really cool effect, I don't know if that's how ironicepitome used it, but it looks great! But I wouldn't know, I don't have Photoshop.
