Having any major effect? what a joke. consider that the world has over trillion (1000 times as much) barrels of proven oil reserves already (and that those will probably run out in 60-70 years), a billion barrels (if its even that much) won't make a noticable difference. Still, its impressive. Its almost as big as the entire recoverable reserves of all of Australia.

A lot of the time where degrees are wanted, yet the degrees are not specifically related to the job is because of the skills people pick up doing their degrees (time management, getting work done, etc.), and the thought processes that they develop, which make them suitable for the job. for example there was some finance firm here trying to recruit engineers because they all have good mathamatics and computer skills.

Given that toyta have had their prius out for almost 10 years now, i'd say that they're going to release a revision of it that will, well, put the volt shame. Not to mention that numerous other companies are getting pure EV cars ready for mass production next year aswell. GM's playing catchup, not revoultionizing the market.

yeah, anything from 25-60mph, that is pretty much what i've been trying to say: because th bus is driving slower, it means is more effecient than driving at highway speeds.

Cars usually have the range that they'e most effecient from about 3-5000rpm, and some higher performance ones can be higher, (5-6000rpm or even more). Another example would be ship engines, which usually run at about 900rpm, but are frigging huge.

Well, like i was saying before, fi you got enough people into tall enough buildings, the towers could become the isolated bits in a park, rather than parks the isolated bits in a city. Of course, that isn't the most effecient way to use space, which is probably the main concern for the future unfortunatly.

Can't say i'd cry if i lost my (small anyway) back or front yards. I do, however, really like my garage, so somehow i doubt i'll ever be moving into a highrise, while i can avoid it.. That being said, the idea of having towards placed randomly in a forest surrounded completely by trees (no roads... maybe busses only or something) would be quite an amazing place to live. Except for those of us who like cars.

2/3rds of the different types of jobs, perhaps, but what fraction of the total number of jobs by the amount of people working them? i think you'd find that there's a lot more people that do, say, roadworking than there are optometrists.

I was trying to think what i liked best about Brisbanes mass transport system. Is it the good busses, and the great busway that i use to zip the 15km's into uni in 20 minutes. Is it the citycat, a fast ferry service that runs up and down the river. Or is it the....err.. mediocer trains? No, the thing i like best about the transportation system as the way its all brought together, under a single ticketing company (well, in a nutshell, im not 100% sure of the exact corperate workings). What it means for the average joe commuter is that they buy a ticket that covers the "zones" that they want to get to, and they can take any mode of transport that they like. with a daily ticket from, say, my place to the city, i could catch a local bus up to the bus station, bus along the busway into uni, catch the ferry into the cbd, catch the train out towards the uni again and then connect with a bus to get back to uni and then bus it home. all of the different transportation comanies use a unified ticket structure. To make it even better, they've setup a smart card system that you can load money onto. I've not bought an actual "ticket" for over a year now, just "touch on, touch off", and i never have to worry about change for the bus etc. These are present all all bus/train/ferrys aswell. Its great for getting around.

I should get my camera out next summer, we get some incredably beautiful views of the storms as they march to the coast here. Then we get drenched. (and flooded if you happen to live in a bad spot, which i don't, luckily)

If its illegal to own big amounts, but the drugs we're talking about are not things that could be easily home grown, then doesn't it defeat the point? there's still an equal amount of illegal (manufacture and distribution), if not even more because the demand has gone up... Personally, i'd see this as giving more business to the cartels, not less.
