  1. SimCity 4 community...

I think he meant because those websites are non-english. But, downloading seems pretty self-explanatory.

  3. great city names for the newbie city namer!

I am working on a new region where all my towns are named for British beers. Either named after breweries, beer styles, or common ingredients. But, in addition, I have found these resources that generate town names. Might be helpful: http://www.geocities.com/terrorsmartyr/boe/citynames.html http://adrian.gimp.org/cgi-bin/sub.cgi http://www.yalestar.com/subdivision.php

  7. Fused Grid

O Wow! Looks Awesome. :-) I am excited to see it come together. The second picture I posted that shows a more developed look is a link to a website that has a great background information about the plan. THe person that put it together also wrote this: http://www.cein.ca/nua/ip/ip02.htm If you are interested, I suggest taking a look at it. Not too long, pretty easy read.
  8. Wikipedia Screenshot

I believe this is the picture he is referring to: Gah! You beat me to it.
  9. Fused Grid

Looks good. By having the roads on diagonals like that, looks like it adds lots more green space. The idea with the Fused Grid would be to take those huge tracts of suburban area, then create inroads that either end in a cul de sac, or return to their originating road. This way, traffic is forced to the outer streets. I really am curious if this method is of any benefit in SC. Let me know how it turns out!

I'd love to see some pics when they are up

Hello everyone. As you can tell, I am new to this site, and I must say to everyone (and especially the staff here): well done. This site seems like a great community with loads of information. I have always been a fan of the Sim City games, but have not played last since 3000. I decided to check out if there was a new version and was excited when I saw Societies. But as I read more about it, I became let down hearing that the game takes out all the zoning and city planning that is what I love about Sim City. Then, I stumbled upon this site and realized that Sim City 4 is still alive and kicking. Knowing this, and after spending time reading most of the articles in the Omnibus, I decided this was the route to go. Sim City 4, here I come (albeit a bit late). With that said . . . now I have to pick a place to start. It certainly feels overwhelming. So, if someone would be so kind, here are some questions I hope to get answered before I begin. What is the difference between BATs, Props, Lots, etc? Is there a glossary somewhere on this site to explain the myriad of terms in Simtropolisese? Which downloads would serve as a good foundation? It seems like the NAM is an essential, but what other packs might be useful? Thanks for the help and advice. I am sure some of these questions must have been asked before. My apologies if they are repetitive. Just not sure where to look for the answers!

    Thank-you both.
  13. Newcomer Here

Yea, I did find that eventually. Just took a lot of time trying to digest this whole site. But, I am utterly fascinated with the level of dedication here. I just read through the Digby CJ, wow. You guys are hardcore!

Thanks doorknob60. That looks like a good list.
  15. Fused Grid

Awesome, I look forward to seeing your pictures. I did some further reading of the concept and in the first image above, it describes the pink sections as being zoned for commercial and other institutional facilities flanked by one way arterial roads. With this open space, it would seem a great place to be able to run rails or highways, in addition to more suburban suited commercial activity.
  16. Mark Read?

Most forum software has a link somewhere so that a user can mark all outstanding "unread" posts as "read". Does this exist on ST? Am I missing it?

Compared to law school, just about anything is mindless.
  18. Newcomer Here

Thanks for the explanation. I have spent some more time pouring through the resources here. It is truly amazing the amount of effort people have placed into this. I have not yet picked up a version of the game. Being a law school student, my time is thin. But, as the end of the semester is quickly approaching, I am looking for something to fill my hours this summer. Something mindless, yet engaging. Looking forward to it!
  19. To add my own two cents of knowledge in real estate development . . . Especially when it comes to suburbs, after WWII it became very popular to adopt a grid system for residential communities. The massive amounts of people moving to the suburbs required a quick way to build houses. Laying them out in a grid allowed for maximizing the amount of land used for building. But, it created enviromental issues. Namely, with water drainage, and ashpalt heating. This is why many newer developers are taking the approach of aggregating houses around a circle, with common/shared green space. It decreases the amount of roads, increases the open spaces, and creates niche communities. Each have their advantages. Some developers are heavily pushing this new model, but others resist.
