Fort Martin County, Florida - A Tropical CJ
mnmsimmer replied to mnmsimmer's topic in SC4 City Journals
A little CLARIFICATION: Yes, I am using cheats. Ironically, they significantly help in adding realism. Many, but certainly not all, of my buildings are functional plop types. Now, I am also using the Hawaiian Holiday (PEG, I think) water mod and the LBT Yucatan terrain mod. IMHO, both fit perfectly in South Florida. Goldiva's wonderful tropical tree mod and her marina (which I lot edited to suite the region) are great additions necessary to the attempted realism and feel of this CJ. Many SG, BSC, and other props also helped me a lot. If you would like for me to recognize anyone who I may have not given enough credit, please do chime in. In the meanwhile, enjoy and feel free to comment, question, compliment, and criticize! -

Update No. 2 Here are some initial overview shots of the region. This is just to give all of you an idea of how large the county is, the geography, the towns, etc. Also, please feel free to nominate the next town for me to develop. The only condition is that it must be adjacent to an existing municipality. Right now, there is only one (Ft. Martin proper). I think this would be a fun, interesting, and semi-interactive way to develop the region! SW Ft. Martin County SE Ft. Martin County NE Ft. Martin County Here's a more recent region shot (the city of Ft. Martin proper has filled in nicely - it's almost maxed, landwise) Current County Pop. (as of yesterday) -

plently of resorts acomin this way... no need to worry -
this is amazing. I am from CT (also metro New York -- Go Yankees/Giants!) and go to the Hamptons on my families boat a lot during the summer. you should include farms (vineyards are especially popular -- lots of rich NEW YAWKAS) because the Hamptons and parts of southern CT are still relatively undeveloped and rural; but still close enough to NYC to reap the benefits. Anyway, GREAT job. Is southern CT on your map too? It's like 2 feet from NY.

thanks!

I know how to remove all textures on a lot using the iLiveReader - I have done this to make realistic forests. How does one remove only a select group of textured tiles (i.e. a lot partially in water, partially on land). Thanks, msimmer

Thanks everyone for compliments/comments. I just finish "un-maxis-ing" the maxis Country club (new parking lot, tennis fence, good flora, etc - I think it turned out well, you'll see it next update) and I am filling in the outer edges of the city with SF development and I am very close to starting in a couple suburbs. There will be a (hopefully big) update on Fort Martin County either this afternoon or monday or tuesday afternoon, time pending. And yes, I do need some resorts as I am runnin' outta room in Fort Martin proper. -

Originally posted by: Simsamerica nice dude, On the one with the buissness chains, Publix are popular all over the Southeast, I had 3 in my hometown in Huntsville alabama and I think they maybe building the 4th or 5th, Is that Kevdan25s Mcdonalds or is that a custom one? Personally I like the ones by TG or Jmeyers off of SC4 Dev. I like the CJ so far, question though. Whats the Water Mod used? And whered you get the yellow crosswalk texture? Anyways, seems florida like, even though I have been only twice... and it was north Florida.quote> Thanks. Yeah the McD's is the kevdan model but I changed the landscaping to suit Florida/the Coastal South better. I have seen Publix in SC and GA so I know they're around there too. The water mod I'm using is Hawaiian Holiday. IMO perfect for South Florida. If I were doing a N. Florida or a Georgia/Carolina, I think the Brigantine Water Mod would be better suited. I think the Hawaiian Water compliments the Cocos nucifera (latin for Coconut palm) very well! -

Originally posted by: Raysfan16 Hey, good work, I love regions designed to have a feel of RL regions (see Skagit County, my Pacific NW CJ), and I'm gonna follow the CJ of my home state-but a few tips:-You can combine all of that into one post, that helps alot and I think what you just did (posting six images in a row) might be against the rules. If not it's pretty annoying. -Replying to comments helps keep them coming back. See other CJ's for examples. Edit: Welcome to Page 2!quote> Is that really against the rules to post like that? I didn't know that... and the last thing I want to happen is to be kicked off... Thanks for you suggestions and comments. -

Would it be an American city without American chain stores (and hotels) and big box retailers? Of course not. Publix Supermarkets are very popular throughout Florida as well as the Coastal Southeast. I'm not lovin' it... but what could be any more American? Did you stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night? Costco and Century Cinema Red Lobster and Ruby Tuesday -

Originally posted by: Wheezy I've been working on a Floridian CJ (Osceola, FL) for the past few months, but you beat me to it. (The little I got done can be seen here: https://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v48/Taiyou/Osceola/ ) I like your syle, though. The colors look great, and even the Maxis buildings work very well where you've put them. We seem to have some Floridians on ST, so feel free to ask us anything.quote> Thanks. I think the 4 different kinds of palms really help with the whole look LOL. Here is a picture of a wholesale plant nursery I made especially for the Fort Martin area. I included the typical Florida vegetation (e.g. Live Oak, Butia palms, Coconut palms, Phoenix palms, Roystonea palms, Crape Myrtle, Azalea, Southern Pine, Bananas, etc.) As you can tell, I am really into creating the tropical look through use of Florida flora! The Fort Martin area is kind of supposed to be a mix of Miami, Fort Myers, and the Tampa area. -

1960's era buildings along the bayfront. Florida Trailers Nicer Middle Class homes. This style has been popular in Florida since the 80's: homes like these are often built in suburban culdesac neighborhoods and have contributed to ridiculous traffic and SPRAWL. -

Yeah, a lot of times I just don't finish what I start. Sometimes I get a better idea, drop what I'm doing and roll with it. It happens over and over. I'm going to try to be more committed to this CJ than others in the past. Thanks for the comments everyone. -

If you cannot see the images, it may be because you are using Internet Explorer. I no longer use IE because it has very weak security and is very slow. You can download Firefox for free on their website. IMO, it's a much better, faster, and safer browser than IE and you don't run into the same problems you do with IE. -
Fort Martin County, Florida - A Tropical CJ
mnmsimmer replied to mnmsimmer's topic in SC4 City Journals
Fort Martin Florida is situated in the quintessential lush, tropical paradise setting of South Florida. Royal, Coconut, and Phoenix palms thrive in its warm, humid climate. Tourists flock to the warm, white sandy beaches around the port city, which are always crowded. In the 1960's, people started migrating to this paradise in droves. A large number of people came from the New York area and Chicago. Before air conditioning became commonplace in single-family homes and residential buildings, very few people found living in South Florida hospitable. A couple homes in one of the first suburban neighborhoods to develop in Fort Martin. These Florida Ranch style homes peaked in popularity in the 1960's and were highly sought after. Today, these homes have depreciated in value considerably. No longer considered luxurious, neighborhoods with these homes have been in steady decline. This particular neighborhood would now be considered a dangerous place to live; it is no longer far removed from the slums of Fort Martin.
