Transportation Costs/Fees

Anyone know where I could start digging into the transportation side of the game? I'd like to create a mod or at least attempt to create a mod that would allow you to set fees for transportation like bus fare and air fare. It would help in off-setting the costs to run these in a city.

 

It seems they already track rides per day so I would imagine there should be some way to use this to add a fee.

 

I'm new to moding but this was one of the first things I found annoying about the game so figured if someone could give me some tips and where to start I might be able to do it myself.
