SC4 (+all mods and patches): XP --> Windows 7. How?

I used to play SC4 like mad on my desktop PC. I've got stacks of mods and patches and whatnot installed on the machine. I really liked SC4. Then I stopped playing for a while. Because my silly desktop PC got seriously slow (can anyone say Core2Duo?) and I really didn't want to format and have to reinstall everything. One of the things I'm most scared of in the whole format-and-reinstall process is the LHD to RHD mod for traffic. I've forgotten which registry entries to do where, just to get the damn cars on the correct side of the roads. Anyways, I digress...

I've now got myself a laptop with Windoze 7 Pro on it. I want to know if its possible to, via magic or a mermaid's tear, copy all the stuff off of the XP PC over to the Win7 PC. Is it?

Will all the patches work? Will most of my DLC work on the new PC? Will I be able to get the bloody cars on the correct side of the road without too much of a hassle?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

If you mean "by copying all the stuff" your whole plugins folder, sure it will, the regions too if you wish. But you'll have to reinstall the game and repatch it to ver 1.1.638 (at least) and consider 1.1.640 for the nightlights.

Also consider the latest NAM out there, a lot of mods depend on the NAM so better stay updated with that.

For the driving side, there is indeed a registry key to edit in case you want to change the game driving side, but this shouldn't take you more than 2 minutes, and is very easy to do. Follow the discussion here for more details.

Welcome back to the game :)

Welcome back to the game :)

Fantastic, I'll check that out soon. Need to wait until next month to download some new things (In South Africa, our rather lovely telecoms provider still caps us. Joy). Thanks for your help.

Rather than going through all the pain of patching the game and having a CD in your drive (if you have an optical drive, some laptops don't), download a copy of Deluxe digital from either Amazon or GamersGate.  You get a reinstallable installer for version 1,1,641 for about $15 U.S. or less.  This version is fully patched, runs without a CD, and will accept all the Plugins you've had in the past.  You can copy your old My Documents/SimCity 4 folder directly into Documents/SimCity 4, and you'll be off and running.

With new hardware you will want to take a look at some of the how to (pinned) threads in this section, because legacy games are a problem with multi-core boxes, especially if they are 64-bit.

You will probably have a 16:9 screen, and there is a command line fix for that.

A multicore processor can be a problem and there is a command line fix for that.

Have fun, and if you are having any problems, please don't be afraid to ask.

Oh, and if you haven't played for a while, remove your old version of the NAM, and download the new version NAM 31.1.  Use the custom installer to put in the stuff you had in the past, then later you can just use it to add other stuff when you are ready.  Lots and lots of new documentation comes with this version.
