Software Crash

Hi all

I've been running SC4 RH for months now with no problems, however the other day I brought a new monitor (1920x1080 Res) to replace my old 1360x768 Res monitor - and now the game won't open. It just comes up with an error saying "SimCity 4 will run with the software driver when next launched". So far all the usual solutions like re-installing the game, trying different compatibility modes and forcing it to run in 640x480 res haven't done a thing. I'm guessing it's a resolution problem.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem? It's really annoying, especially when I've spent about 8 months on and off building a region with 450,000 sims.

Try this:

"C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 [Deluxe]\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -intro:off -CustomResolution:enabled -r:1920x1080x32

This is the target line for your short cut. Note that there is a space before each hyphen and if it is wrapped, it is all one line. The [Deluxe] applies without the brackets if you have deluxe and not Rush Hour. And don't miss the colons. Your best bet is to copy this and modify it as needed.

Sorry for the small print, but it is one line.

OK, now we come to the describe your environment point.

Check all your graphics settings in your graphics controller. They should all be set to "application selected" or equivalent language. The game does not understand any of these.

Make sure your sound system is properly connected. If there is not audio the game will not start.

I have an LG 2442W monitor (24" 1920 x 1080) connected via an ATI/AMD Radeon Graphics Controller (780G) chip set and have no problems with this. I am currently running the fglrx package version 2:8.840. I have also tested the follow on version which also runs correctly. I am running on Linux Mint 11 Katya (GNU/Linux 2.6.38-11-generic x86_64) with wine 1.3.15.

    Please describe your Graphics Processor.

What operating system are you running? If you are running Windows 7 then there is no reason for this other than some hardware/software incompatibility with your GPU.

Its windows 7, Graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 5670. The audio is definitely connected.

Not sure how to "Check all your graphics settings in your graphics controller".

Somewhere in your windows menus you will have access to an ATI Catalyst Control Center. Open it in administrative mode and look around. In the 3D controls section you should find the options you want. In my system the defaults were to have everything set to having the checkboxes for "override application setting" not checked. This is important. Any program that wants these items on should enable them themselves, and turn them off when they exit. If a poorly behaved program has set them and left them, you must reset them.

Unfortunately their doesn't seem to be any 3D Controls section in my Catalyst Control Center (that I can find anyway). Where do you find it?

I haven't the faintest idea, but it has to be there somewhere. I clearly have a different version, and I am on Linux as well. Just look around for things like Anti-Aliasing and you'll find what's there.

I've just re-installed it and that fixed it. Must have reset everything the correct size.
