Other than your nations own(de facto) what nations anthem would be your favorite? (if you can't have just one list them all!)

nation, UN recognized(ex. US, UK, Serbia), Partially recognized (Ex. Republic of China(Taiwan), Kosovo) or even those micro-nations.

===========================================

For some reason even though I'm from the US some of my more fav. anthems are from countries the US never really liked or still doesn't. Along with a few of the US's BFFs.

(random order)

East Germany

^ Crappy governments but good anthems.

(sure there's more)

Commonwealth countries that are not republics have two. There is the Royal Anthem, played for the Queen when she visits and the Governor General otherwise, and the national anthem of the country. So many countries have God Save the Queen/King as default in some cases. The original tune is from the Prussian national anthem (Heil Sei Die Gnaden Furstin). Of the others, I rather like:

The Star Spangled Banner. It is a fine song, and only good singers can manage it.

Waltzing Matilda. The Aussies made if official, recognizing a truism.

La Marseillaise. The French really mean this when they sing it.

The rest, I can take or leave with respect.

Giuseppe Verdi refused permission for the Italians to adopt Va Pensiero from one of his operas. So what they have is a rather pompous march instead of this intensely patriotic song.

I have only heard a few more then once.

I do like O Canada heard it many times at Hockey games and baseball games.

Was very impressed the crowd singing along with it at

a rangers game recently.

BTW- Its only the selfcentered celbrity/popstars who feel the need to trick up

The Star Spangled Banner with very unnessary oversinging and holding notes WAY to long.

My theory is that they cant sing.

Go to a live regular season ball game and hear it done right.

Thank you. O Canada comes in two versions, English and Joual, with an official mish mash of the two. When I was a kid and God Save the Queen was still the official anthem, the most often sung patriotic song sung in my neck of the woods was The Maple Leaf Forever, but it is too anti-Quebec for a national anthem.

I particularly like The Star Spangled Banner sung by someone who knows how to sing. Unfortunately for most Americans, the NFL doesn't know anyone who can sing. MLB can usually find singers, especially in cities like New York that have good voice schools like Julliard. The final high note in this tune defeats the untrained most of the time. The so-called singers who try it clearly define their tiny-talent. Most of these persons also have to slide into the notes with useless decorations or they can't find them. I suspect that many of these dolts think the lyric is "José, can you see?" since it often sounds like this.

Considering what the people went through at the time of the Austrian occupation, I think Va Pensiero was the right thing. Too bad Verdi was so stiff necked. If you haven't you should see a performance of Nabucco, and to switch composers, Tosca.

Waltzing Matilda. The Aussies made if official, recognizing a truism.

Sadly, we didn't. Our national anthem is the much duller "Advance Australia Fair".

Waltzing Matilda did come second in the 1977 national plebiscite to choose a national song, with about 28% of the vote. Advance Australia Fair won with about 43%.

Waltzing Matilda is the official song of the US 1st Marine Division, so someone likes it enough to use it in an official capacity. :P

I can't seem to find it now, but I did hear a version of The Star-Spangled Banner by the Reduced Shakespeare Company sung with the "Oh" a quaver shorter than usual, and every subsequent syllable a quaver early. The result is odd, but singable after a few tries.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Well the Hispanic population is on the rise so it may get changed :whatevs:

your usually OK at regular season games getting a decent singer from some local school or choir. playoffs or opening day you usualy get someone famous to muck it up
