    Yes use wine.

wine is not an app.  It is a kernel layer that simply intercepts windows calls and translates them into native mode.  The rest of the code just runs normally.  I have no idea what this cedega app is, but if it is an emulator, it is not even worth a look.  wine adds itself to the kernel and running in user mode only, does the job.  If you are a current C++ programmer, you can download the code and have a look at it, but be prepared:  there is a lot of it, and it is quite complex as it convinces apps that it is windows.

Depending on your hardware and your GPU, you have several choices, all using wine.

On my old machine that ran XP very well, SC4 ran quite well with wine 1.2 (the current supported release).

With my current box, I am running with wine 1.3.6 which is a beta.  For some reason, I have to run using the Virtual Desk Top, but it runs well.

In any case, expect the usual number of CTDs, so save a lot.

You can easily get wine 1.2 from the distribution using the Synaptic Package Manager.  Just configure wine for XP, and use the winetricks package to load vc6run and you'll be fine.

If you want to run the BAT, there is a problem with gmax.  I am working on it.

Now, if you want to restrict the number of processors running the task, you will want to pick up schedtool.  I have found that it makes SC4 under wine practically bullet proof.

If you want command lines and scripts, PM me.

EDIT:  I checked the distribution and cedega does not appear to be available for Debian based systems.

To install SimCity 4 vanilla under wine, load the first CD and open it with the file system browser.  Locate the file autorun.exe, right click on it and open it with the wine program loader.  Enter your serial number in the normal manner in the dialogue box, and continue.  When you get to changing disks you first have to dismount the first disk (right click and choose eject), then mount the second disk.  Easiest way to do the mount is to open it.  Then click OK in the dialogue box to continue the installation.

And so on, with Rush Hour.

For Deluxe, there are only the two disks.

After the install finishes, don't forget to update with the EP1 and the BATupdate.

You need to use winetricks to add the C run time (vc6run) to your wine environment.  The game should run, but if it does not, enable the virtual desktop under wine.  If you have problems with this, PM me.

Your installed user directory will be in your linux home directory in the usual manner.  When you are running it will appear to be on drive H:

Don't forget to check to make sure that the disk drive has been included in the Disk list for wine configuration.  If in doubt, mount the play disk and press the Autodetect button in the wine configruaton Drives panel.
