No one has been seriously injured after an explosion at ATK near Short Gap, West Virginia, according to Maryland State Police helicopter personnel.

Several fire and hazmat trucks responded to ATK around 5:15 p.m. after the blast.

ATK makes rocket propulsion systems.  It is the largest defense contractor in West Virginia.  It was formerly known as ABL(Allegany Ballistics Laboratory).

Security personnel at ATK told a 911 dispatcher "there was no hazmat involved."

At least one person was transported to the hospital, but they were alert and conscious in the ambulance, according to dispatchers.

WHAG's Adam Winer is on the scene.  We will have a full report at 11pm.quote>

Sure is very little news about an Explosion and a defence plant.

nothing on CNN or Foxnews.com about this.

Probably to keep people calm. If the news started going on about an explosion at a defense plant, then people would think that terrorists attacked.

Awaiting signature arrival...

Probably wasn't a big explosion. They only make mundane sounding small stuff, so its not like there some high tech military thing that's malfuntioning. all in all not really much to talk about.

During WW II my grandfather worked as a steam fitter in a picrite plant (Welland Chemical Co.) and one day there was an explosion heard across town.  My grandmother worried quite a bit until grandpa got home.  Two people were killed, but it was no big deal.  The plant was back to work the next day.

I think this is an analogue to this story, so I hardly think it needs to be called "Breaking News" at this point.  Maybe the title of the thread needs editing.

When I was in college, I worked at a plant of the Carborundum Company that made refractory materials for the summer.  All the areas around the furnaces were set up so that the walls would fall outward (sheet corrugated iron) if there was an explosion in the furnaces (steam explosion due to lining failure was expected).  Our safety record was very good.  Stories about fatal accidents circulated freely, and none of them were recent.  Things happen, and are not big deals where dangerous or tricky materials are concerned on an industrial scale.
