Vundo

Okay, so when I started my comp. today, Norton said it has detected a trojan.vundo file.

So it fixed it and didn't bug me about it.

But, pop-ups still show up when I use IE, and every time I restart, I get a bad image message, and it takes forever to load.

I've run both the FixVundo by Symantec, and VundoFix, another commonly reccomended thing for it.

Anyone else got some ideas, or dealt with this before?

Okay, 99% of the time I use Firefox, smart guy!

And they Still pop up in Firefox too!

Well, I think I found part of the problem:

2 1/2 hours of Norton scaning: 0 infected files

15 min of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software: 15 Infected files

Your trouble sounds like the trouble I had getting rid of Norton. It's a tenacious little resource hog that defies any attempts to uninstall. Symantec's monster is a program that causes as many problems as many viruses.

Now I use Comodo Firewall, a free all-in-one that has done a bangup job. That's why I recommend it to just about anyone. It would have caught the Vundo before it got in (as it did for me) and wouldn't let it do anything at all if it had.

Well, never fear, I got rid of the bugger!

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware Software found and destroyed all the infected files.

It seems that Norton removed vundo, but there is still nasty residue from it laying around.

I would recommend installing Spybot Search & Destroy, booting into safe mode, and letting it run, along with all other anti-malware programs you have in your arsenal.

Also, are you using XP or Vista?

Edit: Argh, I need to remember to refresh the page more often. 15.gif

Well, the virus seems to be gone, but the long load time remains, which is a bit odd.

Before the virus the loading time was 30 seconds, now its about a minute or two.

Anyone got an explanation for this?

It's Norton. Dump it. There's much better options out there, many are free downloads. It also may have missed a lingering piece of the virus in the registry.

Well, I did use another program to finish off the virus, the Malwarebytes thing, but the time remains.

Another Issue I seem to have delvoped is random BSoD-s while playing HL2 and Gmod. I think this is related to my power supply though.

I have a 500W supply, and bought a GPU that uses 400W at least. Could this have any relation to the long start-up times?

EDIT: Alrighty, the long loading times were a networking issue.
