I'm trying to make a capital city full of skyscrapers for my region and I'm asking for your opinion on what type of buildings to make. Should I base the city around a more modern look or maybe go with a pre-1950s style.

Well, its all up to you really. It depends on what type of city you want. For a Capital City, you might want the central area to be older, surrounded my more modern construction for realism, as the Capital is usually one of the oldest cities. There is really no limit to what you can design, and EVERYTHING is your choice.
