Opposite Day

So I was at Borders yesterday and I got into this discussion with another guy about nothing in particular.  We strayed to the topic of opposite day.

He said that if you say that it is opposite day, then it is not, since the opposite of opposite day is just a regular day.  then I said that if say that it isn't opposite day, then it obviously isn't and you should go do something useful with your life.

He then added that if you say that it is opposite day but it kind of isn't, then it could be opposite day.  Then I added in that the opposite of that is that it isn't opposite day but it kind of is.

Thirty minutes later, we concluded that the meaning of life is to kill, because if you kill everyone but yourself, then what you say is law.

Any comments on that?

"The meaning of life is to discover the meaning of life." - Me

Yeah, I quoted myself. Sue me.

That silly song from The Hunchback of Notre Dame comes to mind. You know, "topsy turvy"?

The concept also lends itself to being a day of "Eeen Russia" jokes.

Eeen Russia, holiday declares yoo!

(that's suposed to be said with a stereotypical Russian accent)

Anyway, you've hit on what we call a paradox. The following statement is true: the previous statement is false.

Makes for a great way to break logic. Or you could just divide by zero. That'd do the trick, too.

And the meaning of Life

 Well, it's nothing very special.

Uh, try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.

if a certain brand of peanut butter has 70% less fat than peanut butter, is it peanut butter if the label calls it peanut butter?

Last I heard, soybeans don't lactate.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Its opposite day, which means that it is not opposite day, therefore, the mere notion of opposite day is a self denying paradox which cannot exist without breaking the laws of nature or the English Language, therefore if such a thing were to exist the universe would experience total annihilation because nature would collapse and no order would exist.

Duke, I know I just said a ton incorrect things in that statement, just go ahead and tell me I'm wrong.

No, actually, I approve of your logic. Not far fetched so say that if you celebrate a holiday on the day if falls, that opposite day would be the last day you'd celebrate opposite day. And therefore it's "not opposite day" and you get an infinite loop of "but if it isn't, then it is" and "but if it is, then it isn't". I don't know about the "laws of the English Language" necessarily mattering, but nature, yes.

God sucks at programming, and this is proof. Infinite loops aren't supposed to exist, they're bugs or outright mistakes. 21.gif
