Problem with new city building

Hey guys,

I have already done the whole go into one square, build my city and then stop thing.  I now want to utilize each part of the region to its fullest extent.  I started off using the -Making Money the easy way- tutorial in the Omnibus, but nothing ever seems to work like it shows in the tutorial.  I have redone things about 3 or 4 times to test some things out, but everything always goes astray.

If I follow the tutorial to the T, I have about 500 Industry jobs in my one town and in the other that has two neighborhoods in it, only like 8 houses build and it sits there with only about 80 people and only one business.  I have gone back and forth and sped it up for 4 or 5 years and nothing else builds in either city.  I have found that if I place a school at this point in the suburb, things explode (although the tutorial says this shouldn't come until later).  After this, I cannot get any more building until I add water (again something the tutorial doesn't do until much later).  Then a little after 2000 people and about 3500 industrial jobs, building stops completely in all the factors of industry ,business, and residential.  The demand meter tells me all they want in residential at the same time my current residentials are being abandoned because they don't have jobs.  On top of that, I also have to move back and forth between the two towns much more often the the tutorial mentions it has to.

Any help for this ***** would be great.

Ok, I believe I read that tutorial as well. Going by your comment about 500 Ind jobs it sounds like you don't have the Ind multiplier installed which I believe was necessary for that tutorial to work.

He actually says this in the into "With that said, this tutorial is designed to be replicated by anyone even if all they have is the vanilla version of SC4"

Sorry, I went and checked, I confused that tutorial with Fast Population and Profit Growth on Hard Game Play Setting. I knew I recognized your's though because I tried it too, and it failed for me too even when I did it exactly the same as tut.

I just tend to get way ahead of myself when I play and start bleeding money, so I wanted to try this to keep profits up.

Can't give you an accurate reply without more information, but as long as you have industrial jobs and residential zones (lots of them) you should have residents moving in and getting jobs without any education whatsoever. I would alter the tutorial slightly to provide 1x2 lots instead of the 1x1 lots that are pictured in the tutorial. 1x1 don't fill in right away, and are effective in that they provide the maximum amount of Sims for the least amount of space, but I don't know any houses that don't have a backyard. 4.gif This might be why following the tutorial "to the T" might cause you some problems.

I will redo this with the 1x2 lots, sim for a few years and post some screen shots to see what I may be doing wrong. Thank you for the posts.

1x1 lots work fine. I tried emulating the tutorial, and yes, my results were different (couldn't get, or was that couldn't be bothered to get the high density commerce neighbours?), but the residential city turned out pretty similar to what the tutorial shows us.

I think the problem may be the rate of jumping between the R and the I cities in the initial stages.

    Do it a lot.

The R won't develop without jobs in the I, and the jobs in the I won't develop with sims in the R. It's a bit slow, and there is a LOT of jumping back and forth between the two cities, but once the ball gets rolling, it doesn't slow down.

Ok, I just made some screen shots.  Maybe these can shed the light on what I am doing wrong.  I hope they aren't to big for the forum.

In both cities, I went back and forth often. Once what you see there was built, everything just stopped. I even went on in this one to add water, a hospital, a PD and a school in the residential and it still did not do anything.

Have you checked the desirability? (Data Menu)

Or, the problem could be in the commute time. Check it in the Graph Menu.

Even if those are the problems, does that mean I won't be able to get region play working so that I can have my industry in one city and suburbs in another?  Desirability is full green in the suburbs and even after putting all of those residential plots, the demand for residential is through the roof.

You don't appear to have any mass transit.

When I copied the tutorial (and in all of my cities), I place bus stops roughly every 6 squares. Try this for both cities.

You may also want to reduce the amount of C as well. They *may* be soaking up the job seekers, preventing them from finding the neighbouring city of jobs, and 'telling their neighbours.'

Also (and this may just be because the images are so small), but I can't see the neighbour connection arrows on the R city, leading into the I city.

Lastly, you may want to restart both cities, and when you play, run each city for a minimum of 3 months (preferably six, or until any development peeters out.)
