Try smaller lots. I get a lot of variety with 4x4 (the smallest that'll grow, BTW) and 4x5 lots. I tend to put down 4x5 lots, as I can plunk down bus stops before they grow.

Get a high demand for the agricultural sector and provide each farm with water.

Have lots of uneducated people living in or nearby your cities.

DO NOT I repeat DO NOT give your farms water, they dont need it and all they do is dump thier pesticides and herbicides in your water supply and ruin it for the town.

Besides realistically speaking they have windmills they can get thier own water.

Anyway I like to buid HUGE farms, it looks a lot cooler, i build on the order of 20x30 tiles sometimes, and once that demand gets up there you will see bigger barns, silos, and even cattle and horse ranches.

And education shouldn't matter, as the towns grow, the Agriculture demand is something that will always skyrocket until about 100,000 sims and then it tapers off to stagnant.

I size my farms by click and hold.  This creates a nice default size.  You realize, of course, that you get no more farm demand when your population reaches 50,000.

I also put some 1 x 2 R (Q-key) lots directly on the farm land along the access roads.  If there is a cross road, I may put in a couple of 1 x 2 C (A-key) commercial lots too.  No water is needed for these, either.

Was it 50,000 when the demand drops? Geez I didn't think it was so early, but yeah making small farmhouses with a 1x2 residential tile next to the farm seems to help.

so.. should I gave up from education if I want to see farms grow?quote>

There are two things that kill farming; education and traffic.

If you want a big farming community you should refrain from building any educational buildings what so ever. EQ must be kept well below 50.

You must also keep your traffic levels low. If there is a big neighbouring city, do not build any road connections to it, and do not upgrade streets to roads more than absolutely necessary.

Farming does not get killed due to the size of the city as such. But the traffic in a city of 50,000 might be too heavy for the farming.

also ive found that my farms make very little money and i just end up building over them as the R,C and I of my city grows and they dont provide many jobs for a city, but i agree that they are important in the early stages of a city for jobs and income. and the most noteable effects that my farms have had on my city is the water polution caused.
