Whered my commuters go???

I've got a city where all my industry is on the other side of a river. The bridge had over 1500 cars and 1000 bus-commuters up until rescently. Suddenly I have about 200 cars and less than 50 bus-commuters. If I look around my industrial area, I have almost no commuters for any of my factories, even if they have a lot of employes. Also, my mass-transit income has dropped from somewhere around 500-600 to less than 30. It seems like the number of commuters in my city has dropped RADICALY for some unknown reason. I stopped playing the game after a similar phenomena about a year ago, but I rescently descided to give it another try.

Anyone have any clue about what has gone wrong?

This almost certainly has to do with commute times. If you open up your commute graph, what is the average time?

It it is over 100 (maybe even as little as 60), you have too long a commute for your sims. There are a few solutions, but the best one is usually using the Network Addon Module (NAM).

If it is not commute time, post a screenshot of this problem.

Welcome to Simtropolis

It must be your commute time. Look at your road congestion and commute time map.

Get the NAM. Keep in mind that without it, your sims drive about 2 miles per hour and it takes 1 hour to go to the other side of town.

sometimes car #s go way down for a while then back up to even hgiher than before since the ame has to update and re-adjust.

Where are your sims working? Do you have a lot of no job zots?

When you route query them, what does it say. I didn't think of it earlier, but perhaps they are working at jobs which are closer to them (such as commercial). Your problem could be this simple which not a problem at all.

Most of my sims are working in the industrial area on the other side of the river. I have about 10000 industrial jobs and only about 3000-4000 commercial. My residential population is somewhere around 26000, which would indicate that I actually would need more jobs for them.

I have quite a few no-job-zots, and plenty of places abandoned due to commute-time. I've noticed also, that it's only buildings in my industrial area on the other side of the river that operates without commuters. The small high-tech area I just began with closer on to the city gets commuters, as do all the commercial places.

All of these problems began after my GF had played up her city (wich neighbours mine) from 5000 - 30000 population. That is bound to have some relation, but if they were stealing my jobs I think it should still show as commuters coming from her city. Nothing truly explains why I have factories with over 100 employes that obviously produces (they generate freighttrucks) but have absolutley no commuters. That smells bug to me.

Anyway, i'm going to replace the NetworkAddon traffic plugin with the 10xSpeeds variant and see what happens.

If anyone recognizes my problem and know a solution I'd be most greatfull 1.gif

It seems as if the problem is slowly taking care of it self after I installed the 10xCommute-speed improvement.

Commuters are comming back over time. I still have a few bldgs with workers that do not commute, but since the majority now is back riding my busses and trains and generating more money for me, I'm happy 48.gif

Recognize the problem - yes. Have a solution - unfortunately no.

I've had this happen a couple of times with my cities and have no idea why it happens. I have noticed that it tends to be associated with a glitch in the game that for a second or two doubles your population. You may even notice that you all of a sudden get population-based rewards that you shouldn't be getting, like the major league stadium, etc.

This brief surge in population and then return to the original level seems to throw off the game's awareness of just how many people there are and where they need to commute. You may even get delapidation and abandonment in your commercial zones because there's no demand - as if the game thinks half your population has suddenly left, when in reality the population doubled and then dropped back to normal in the space of a couple of seconds.

I don't know if that makes any sense but regardless, I haven't been able to correct it. The only thing I've been able to do is go back to one of my back-up files from before the problem occurred, overwrite the save file and pick up from there.

I had a similar problem when I was starting a new city in an undeveloped region. Basically, whenever I connected to SimNation (it didn't matter where on the map I did it) my Sims stopped commuting and abandonded their homes. When I destroyed the connection, they came back and went back to work. Since then, I get that problem every now and then in my other cities in that region, but not nearly as much as I did in that first city.
I'm thinking that one of the NAM plugins was the cause of my problem, because I had just installed it and had never had that problem before. But you never know...

This happens to me all the time in my main city (1.05 million R, 1.6 million CO). I suspect that the computer is constantly calculating new and better routes for the residents taking into account constantly changing factors.

    Annoying I know 3.gif.
