All cars have odometers. Many modern cars have trip meters. And yes, roadsigns and maps indicated instances to towns, but what if your destination isn't in a town that's listed? It's useful to know how far ahead your exit is.

Numbering of junctions according to miles isn't necessary!quote>

Numbering of junctions at all isn't "necessary", but it's still useful. And numbering according to miles is even better.

Here, have a practical example now - let's renumber the junctions on the M6 based on mileposts:

Sequential # Milepost #
3
11
14
A 22
23
A 26
29
32
37
38
41
42
A 48
49
A 50
52
58
63
74
84
90
94
102
107
110
A 113
114
117
118
120
123
127
135
137
139
141
A 143
145
158
164
168
175
183
192
198
209
212
225
228
232
239

Definitely a better way of doing it.

There's nowhere in Britain that's not on a map. We Probably have the best maps in the world! Your spoilt for choice! It's easy to work out mileages from the maps.

We'll have to agree to differ on this, but I still think mileage based junction numbers are unnecessary and sequential numbers are fine. I'm a professional driver of millions of miles in Britain and Europe and have never experianced any problems with sequential numbering.

Incidently when driving down the M6 it's nice to count down the junction numbers, every number less is nearer home. Same with the M1. However they go up again when you hit the M25 (ie. 21-31)
