  8. Alternate Game Soundtracks

This is a bit of an odd one. When I replay games or when I find that a game's soundtrack starts becoming too repetitive I like to make my own playlists to supplement or replace the musical score. I often find this can greatly enhance the experience and bring whole new life and levels of epicness to the game. Have you ever created your own playlist to replace or supplement a game's soundtrack? If so, what game and what soundtrack? Here are some of my favorite alternate game soundtracks (in no particular order): Uncharted 2 - Transformers 1&2 Expanded Edition OST (Steve Jablonsky) I can't play Uncharted without this music these days. For me the theme of Transformers is the theme of Uncharted 2. It's pretty amazing how well these two things go together. Uncharted 3 - Transformers 3, Battleship (Steve Jablonsky) There is just something about the Steve Jablonsky sound that really enhances the Uncharted experience and it makes it feel even more like a Hollywood blockbuster. Last of Us - Moon (Clint Mansell), The Town (Harry Gregson-Williams), Road to Perdition (Thomas Newman) Last of Us already has a great soundtrack, but part of me felt it just wasn't enough to bring out the drama and tension of the game. The combination of the Moon, Town, and Road to Perdition soundtracks made Last of Us one of the most incredible games I have ever played. Alan Wake - The Illusionist (Philip Glass) The Illusionist soundtrack added a whole new level of mystery and tension to the game. All I can say is the way the soundtrack and the game synced up was uncanny. Assassin's Creed 1 & 2 - Kingdom of Heaven (Harry Gregson-Williams) Medieval Crusades and Italian Renaissance - the Kingdom of Heaven does both. It really helped make the world feel more alive and the game more cinematic. Assassin's Creed 4 - Sherlock Holmes 1 & 2 (Hans Zimmer), Prince of Thieves (Michael Kamen) AC4 already has a great soundtrack by Brian Tyler, but for an open world game like that I need much, much more music to keep it interesting. This combo is pure perfection. Portal 2 - Tron 2 (Daft Punk), Oblivion (M83) P2 had an interesting OST but I found it just wasn't grand and adventurous enough. When you solve a puzzle or do a huge jump while listening to the Tron 2 or Oblivion soundtrack it just makes the accomplishment feel that much more epic for some reason. Bioshock - The Game (Howard Shore), The Ninth Gate (Wojciech Kilar) Bioshock is already a very atmospheric game but when you add The Game and Ninth Gate soundtrack it literally makes every second of gameplay drip with tension. Just walking down the hallways becomes totally terrifying. Hitman: Absolution - Total Recall 2012 (Harry Gregson-Williams) I don't think I would have like Absolution half as much if it weren't for the Total Recall soundtrack. It really made me feel like a super bad ass assassin the whole way through. Hitman: Blood Money - Ipcress File (John Barry) Smooth, jazzy and cool. Sounds like a 60ies era spy thriller or detective film. For some reason I feel it just goes perfectly with a game like Blood Money. I can't imagine Blood Money without the Ipcress File OST. Mass Effect 2 - Blade Runner (Vangelis), Fifth Element (Eric Serra), Battlestar Galactica (Bear McCreary) Mass Effect 2 is another game with a great soundtrack, but again the length of the game makes it kind of repetitive and boring. The Blade Runner and Fifth Element add a whole new dimension of spacey mystique and they are great ambiance music for those times when you're not on a really action oriented mission. And Battlestar just cause I love Battlestar! Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory - Bourne 1,2,3 (John Powell) The Bourne soundtracks in combination with Chaos Theory increases the bad-ass level by a factor of 10. It really adds that cinematic edge and makes even the most mundane thing like walking or slowly creeping in the shadows an intense experience.
