Outages - STEX Test Ready   09/22/2018

Update: 24 Sept, 2018 @ 21:00 EDT All seems to still be working with quick response times. As mentioned below we will continue this test until tomorrow evening before adding guests back to the settings. Tis now my bedtime so please don't break anything while I sleep. But, if anything seems wacky, please post in the ST Bugs Thread. Update: 24 Sept, 2018 @ 19:45 EDT We've been up for one hour with this STEX test and so far server loads are looking good, page load times seem normal, and avatar hover overs are mostly zippy fast. The plan is to run with this configuration until tomorrow evening to give us plenty of time to see if the site stays responsive before we add the STEX access back for guests. (Rest assured, dear guests, we are not trying to force you to join ST. It's just that we have to figure out what has been causing the site to totally crash.) Update: 24 Sept, 2018 @ 18:41 EDT We've brought the STEX back online for members only as our next test. This test might also overload the site as there is some underlying bug which we have not yet identified. Both Cyclone Boom and I are here to keep an eye on the performance. Should ST get overloaded and go down you will first start seeing long page load times and eventually 522/524 errors from Cloudflare. At that point CB will work his magic and then you'll start seeing a 403 Forbidden error. (This means all access is blocked so the site can re-recover.) And then in about 10-15 minutes we'll bring it back without the STEX again should this bad stuff happen causing the aforementioned site crash. See also: My initial Bugs Thread post and CB's recent post there saying we are up in test mode for members. Update: 23 Sept, 2018 @ 22:22 EDT The site stayed up a wee bit longer, but still succumbed to whatever is causing the trouble. At this point we are taking the STEX and the Gallery offline, but will try to keep the forums going. Update: 23 Sept, 2018 @ 18:59 EDT Cyclone Boom has optimized all database tables which is sort of like defragmenting a hard drive. We've brought the site back online and are hoping it helps with the problems. The previous message (below) still applies until we are sure everything is fixed. Previous message: Simtropolis is experiencing random spikes of heavy server load and excessive lag to the point the whole site becomes unresponsive. We've been taking it offline to let it catch up with the load and then bringing it back. This is the best stop gap measure we have at the moment. If you are creating a new topic or post I suggest making a copy and paste to a text editor before clicking the submit button as we can't be sure it won't go offline at the wrong moment for you.

      A Separate Bug   09/24/2018

We are also having trouble with the Contact Us thinger. I do receive them (and they come to me as an email), but now when I reply they immediately bounce back. This could be due to peeps providing invalid email addresses or it could be an actual problem. I do reply to all of them so if you don't get a response within 24 hours you might consider sending me a private message here on ST instead. -Cori (PM me here.)

  1. 4 Seasons

I was online hunting for a dat file for SimCity 4 that would allow cities to experience the four seasons i know we have downloads for season changing trees and one that can make our cities all covered in snow but i was thinking more along the lines of changing the whole city from one season to the next. Do we have something like this or is this something one of Tech Guru's might like to try tackling maybe give us some rain showers once in a while instead of just going from day to night. what are some peoples thoughts on this?
  2. Some Winter Scenes

For the ST Winter Scene challenge, I was working on three images, and I just wanted to share them here. You'll see more of both the City of Niederbauen and the resort of Hörnli over the coming months, but in the meantime, I hope you enjoy these Christmas and Winter themed images. I really wanted to post more in the run up to Christmas but RL and school got in the way unfortunately. I hope I'll be able to post more in 2017. I'm especially sorry for the lack of entries since October. ----------------------------------------------{--------}---------------------------------------------- 1. - The new resort of Hörnli. 2. - A brand new city of Niederbauen. 3. - Hoch-y-Brig revisited in a winter storm. Hope you enjoyed! Have a great Christmas and a New Year! ----------------------------------------------{--------}---------------------------------------------- Replies for "Schwyz"
  3. [VOTING] Winter Wonderland (S3-21-M)

    until
Voting Rules Votes may be cast by rating images inside the album. You may rate all entries once at any rating value (1-5). All votes are anonymous. We encourage you not to rate your own entry. Try to vote on all other entries, as this will help ensure the results are evenly distributed. Suggested Voting Criteria Here are some ideas to help you evaluate each entry when voting: How well does the scene portray the mood and atmosphere of Winter? To what extent is the image central to the Winter theme? Does the image stand out as being unique or interesting? The amount of detail throughout the scene. If used, how effectively do any show/ice effects add to the overall visual appeal? The winners will be the top 3 ranked images after a 10 day voting period. Reputation prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries, and the overall average rating. See this topic for more info. For this Monthly challenge, rep prizes will be given for the top 5 placed entries, along with points for the "Overall" and "Monthly & Custom Content" leaderboards.
  4. Winter Wonderland (S3-21-M)

    until
Winter Wonderland - Show scenes with a winter theme - Season 3 - Challenge #21 - Monthly (31 days) - Results Announced Here! Thanks to @Mymyjp for the challenge idea. The ground is frozen by ice and snow, Falling from above, it's quite the photo. The sun a subtle golden glow, Shining o'er the mistletoe. For the winter warmth is here, People celebrate with festive cheer. The smell, sound and sight, Of the eternal winter light. Yes, this challenge involves creating scenes to celebrate this special time of year (at least as current in the Northern Hemisphere). You may enter up to 3 images including anything that is associated with winter as a season. From snow to Santa, it's completely up to you. What brings the sense of atmosphere and warmth to these cold winter months? Also, the scene doesn't necessarily have to be a rural landscape -- of course, it can snow on the roads and cities as well. You could really apply this theme to any desired location -- be creative! As usual, although not part of the requirements, image editing or use of custom content may be used for enhancement. Suggestion In SimCity 4, one possibility is to enable a basic winter effect using the "Snow" command in the Extra Cheats DLL. Or as explained here, you can just wait until Dec 25, and the game will do this automatically for the entire day. See the Possible Ideas section below for a few examples. This is a Monthly challenge running for 31 days. Submission Requirements The submitted image(s) must incorporate the theme of winter in some form. You may use any city-building game -- including SimCity 4, Cities: Skylines, SimCity (2013), and CitiesXL / XXL. You may submit a maximum of 3 images into the challenge album. a. All your entered images will be eligible for voting, however only your highest rated image will be used in the final ranking. So basically there are 3 opportunities to gain a place in the results, with no downside to submitting more than one. b. In the event of images having an identical rating and votes, the earlier submitted image will be selected. For each submission, you may link a larger version in the description, or post inside the comments section. Please see this post for clarification. For the purpose of voting, please check a full title & description are included on your image(s). Your image(s) must be created solely by yourself, without any assistance from anyone else. To qualify for entry, please ensure your image(s) are uploaded to the submissions category, and comply with these requirements. Possible Ideas Here are a few ideas to get you started, just giving examples of ways to go about this challenge: Note: The following is not a complete list, or a requirement: Snow falling Snow anywhere! Christmas theme (e.g. trees) Festive lighting/decorations An atmospheric street An industrial area in wintry conditions People playing in the snow Sledding Frozen lake/river Ski resort A winter storm Whiteout/blizzard North/South pole Reindeer Santa Claus Leaderboard Rankings A new leaderboard system is currently running for this season. This has been designed to incorporate all challenges, linking with each set of results. Each place in a challenge has points on offer -- the higher you finish, the more points you gain. Then at the end of the season, prizes will be given out to the top 10 in the final standings, with the winner being crowned the Grand Champion! This Monthly challenge is eligible for the "Overall" and "Monthly & Custom Content" leaderboards. Full details and the current standings can be viewed in the following topic: The winners will be the top 3 ranked images. Reputation prizes will be awarded based on the number of entries, and the overall average rating. See this topic for more info. For this Monthly challenge, rep prizes will be given for the top 5 placed entries, along with points for the "Overall" and "Monthly & Custom Content" leaderboards. Good luck to all competitors!

  7. WELCOME TO KROVASTADT PROLOGUE In this City Journal, I want to express a completely new way of City Journal, a history, a progress on the time, an evolution... The town will grown, new towns will grow up according the map (temporal towns for example). The Journal start on 1950 and will expand to the actuality. On this era, I will try to adapt the vehicles and buildings to the era (sometimes I will not be able to adapt it at 100%). Probably someone knows me from RAGNVALD City Journal, well, I want to try something different today, so let's go. In this city I will merge American and European features, I want to get the best of each continent and merge it into one. But, in location, maybe can be somewhere on the northern of Europe. MORE ABOUT KROVASTADT Krovastadt is a mountain region. Always the mountains are covered by snow and the climate is really cold. On this region recently has been discovered some resources to be exploit. Our main focus is the possitive prospection found of ore. But this location is a hard place to exploit resources. Our main focus is on the south side. Where we can start exploting the ore there. A mining camp will be placed around, but we have to build the road first. The planning of location: The objective is to build the road in less than six month. Then build a mining camp and provide it with main facilities until we make infrastructure for Ore industry, the objective is to start exploiting the mine in the 1955. The road is under construction. A initial sand road has been build on the area. Now is time to build the energy supply, with a small eolic park placed on the south. The building of them has been started and is planned to end all of them (4 units) in 1955. Meanwhile, the workforce will sleep on a neiborhood until the first houses are build. The Mining Camp area is under construction too. Actually the main stages like settlement, structure and leveling the area are being done. The first houses are planned to be placed ending 1950 or coming 1951. NEWSPAPER (JANUARY 1950) New competitor for Citroën H Van Citröen and his popular H Van have new competitor. Volkswagen released his Transporter T1. The H van, released on 1947, got the love of all, will the Transporter T1 eclipse the H Van? Volkswagen also made a variant for the public, the called Camper T1. Citroën H Van doing a service in Ragnvald (1950) Volkswagen Camper T1 (left) and Volkswagen Transporter T1 (right) Krovastadt region will be exploited The government approved the exploit of the ore in Krovastadt. After the prospection, the result says there are a big deposit of ore on the mountain. The works to prepare the settlement has been started and they are thinking about to exploit other industry on the area like forestry or farming.
  8. "This was the winter capital, the capital of snow and ice, the sparkling city of frost" - Harrison E. Salisbury 31/10/1941 - At an unprecedently early date, the streets of Leningrad are covered by 10 centimetres of snow. In this picture we see the Holy Church Isidorovskaya, located at the cross of Rimskovo-Korsakova and Lermontovskiy Prospekt. The harsh winter has hit the city hard. The first symptoms are trapped vehicles and frozen pipes. 15/11/1941 - Griboyedov Canal (previosly known as Catherine Canal) has frozen near Alarchin Bridge. In the picture we also see several people trying to shovel the snow off the road as a bus struggles in Rimskovo-Korsakova. 7/11/1941 - Jewish community meets in Grand Choral Synagogue, the second largest in Europe. Snow is a minor problem compared to what awaits them if the Nazis take the city. Leningrad faces the winter with a manpower over two million people. Soldiers, firefighters, snow plowers, trench diggers, industrial workers... The city needs every citizen in order to survive the siege. 2/11/1941 - Voskresenskiy Square, between Volodi Ermaka and Drovyanoy Avenue, appears almost unrecognizable. Its ancient trees now serve to camouflage anti-aircraft guns installed by the Red Army. Despite all the hardships, some everyday scenes seem to ignore the war. In this picture we see a soldier buying tickets for Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony in 1942. Disclaimer: This CJ includes original photos taken during the siege. To my knowledge none of them is protected by copyright, but if I were wrong I'm happy to delete any picture that infringes the law. ----------------------------------[bONUS: Making-of]----------------------------------
  9. This Winter is Relentless

http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/northeast-midwest-snow-winter/24214502 No one gets a break. Spring isn't coming. The new Ice Age has arrived P.S.: I'm within the "Greatest" region on the map.

  11. I have been following the progress of Simcity 2013 for ages. For me it looks like a good new foundation to push the game series forward. My first game from Maxis was A-Train back in the 90s on my Amiga. A stunning little game where cities grew up around the rail lines, which led me to Sim City 2000 when I first moved over to Windows. Both games were similar in concept and graphics. One interesting feature was seasons. In A-Train the land and cities would change as the year went on, from Summer to Winter. Snow would appear on the ground and leaves would drop in the Autumn. Nothing too fancy was going on, but just added to the life of a changing living world. Has there being any talk of something similar, especially as we have seen night/day concepts? Afterall Maxis were able to do this, in basic terms, 20 years ago.
