      The term "Xmas" dates back at least to the 16th century. The X is thought to come from the Greek letter chi, (which looks a lot like an X).

      I always thought it referred to the cross, which in hindsight doesn't really make sense, considering Christmas celebrates Christ's birth, while the cross relates to his death.
