This city journal is a combination of SimCity 4 tutorial for beginner and intermediate players, mention of hidden SC4 tips and tricks for advanced players, and the story as this city unfolds, from the very beginning.

I am a longtime vanilla SimCity 4 Rush Hour player, and this is my first city tile using the NAM.  I love region maps of real-life locations, lots of water, and ferries, and tunnels, large (happy) sim populations, tightly packed urban neighbourhoods, using sophisticated traffic management, wealth development, and zoning techniques, from playing the vanilla game for many happy years.  I have a software development background, and a fascination for city games, which helped me develop a fine-tuned awareness of the economic and traffic imperatives of SimCity 4.  My last project region was Boston, in which I grew a prosperous vanilla region with 889k population across 14 city tiles.

While most people use television and movies for their relaxation, I do SimCity 4, instead.  My TV broke a couple years ago, and it took me 6 months to notice!  *  I haven't even bothered to replace the TV.  On the rare occasions I feel like watching video content, I binge watch science videos on YouTube, instead.

Gosh the NAM is exciting, even though the sheer number of features is tad bit intimidating at times!

Here's the Google Satellite link for Breezy Point, New York, if you'd like to see what I'm basing this city on, or see below for the Google Maps satellite view:

I downloaded the SimCity 4 region map for New York from this link, and used SC4Mapper to break it up into large city tiles:

A seaside backwater city was my deliberate first choice for using the NAM, as the low density housing will make it more forgiving of any early mistakes I make with the NAM features.  As the East New York region develops with further city tiles, I'll come back to this breezy backwater city to develop the area for high density commercial with a booming tourist trade (capitalising on the Eternal Commuters bug) located in the immediate vicinity of my ferry terminals.

During the first stage of city development, I'll be focused on:

  1. low density commercial (C$),
  2. low density housing on tiny lots, much like the real-life map, for my low (R$) and medium wealth (R$$) residents,
  3. sophisticated ferry terminal areas, as future sites for tourist development,
  4. terrain modifications and road infrastructure for future high density (C$$ and C$$$) tourist development,
  5. a little dirty industry (I-D) and manufacturing (I-M) to provide the economic backbone of the city, retail traffic paths, and jobs for my sims.

The pollution problems can be fixed later, but my sims need jobs now!  *;)

I like clean cities, and Breezy Point is a tempting location for lots and lots of windmills, but given the early dirty industry focus, I'll go for dirty power plants initially, too.  Eventually, I'll replace the dirty industry (I-D) with manufacturing (I-M).  No coal power plants, however, as the population simply won't be large enough to sustain a water treatment plant, yet.
