I just wanted know what some people's personal preferences were, when it came to city building, specifically how your city layout is like. Is placing residential zones near industrial zones good? I lay my industry a ways back from the residential areas as to not attract to much pollution. I just dont like how the smog clouds my cities.

I tend to play a lot of rolling hills, rural regions with farms and trees and more farms and lots of trees. The residential is spread out hither and yon. However, I'll also do industrial regions and the poor Sims live right amongst all the smog and the filth. Keeps  them low wealth that way too. Other places I'll have lots of green grass and high land value and no pollution and then make medium and high wealth happy living there.

I too like the farms and the hills and the trees...

I love the transition from rural to urban, not necessarily the suburbs, but having a dense urban center and industry that takes advantage of terrain (i use imagination for natural resources available in the area) and leads to farms and forests, with regional routes connecting it all.

Now that I mention this, it reminds me of those days i used to play some train simulators like trainz. Some routes would be long stretches of ruralness dotted with cleverly placed industries that the trains had to run back and forth in between. A mine here, a forestry there, a dairy farm here, a cattle farm there, a container yard here, a depot there.... and so on.

This gives me ideas...

Recently I have been into building realistic, smaller towns separated by forest, rural villages and farms. Being from the UK I tend to make farmland and towns look more 'British' rather than American, but I guess this can be quite hard to do. On the subject of Industry I tend to have separate tiles for it, or have Large Industry areas, followed by usually medium density and low density Commercial. Then I have low Res, then Med and usually on larger tiles an area of high Res and Commerce, as a small city centre. My play style is a little weird sometimes; it usually changes quite a lot. *:D

Normally I work a region with diverse geography and thus diverse cities. Some areas are predominantly agricultural, others are suburbs, historic towns, medium cities, large cities, archaeological sites, natural landscapes and so on. I aim for an aesthetically pleasing and mostly realistic type of landscape, heavily influenced by locations I've visited and/or lived at. Normally, however, my emphasis tends to be on the infrastructure.

Mostly flatland, because I started an idea two years ago and I constantly begin over and over again. Yeah, it is silly but I don't mind. You see, I plop buildings and I see the drive / delivery time is big. Then I read an article that ploppable IM buildings can have an other time than growable (does this make sense?), so I have to have an nearby delivery point: Hmmm, a harbor. So I have to adjust my plans because I have to put in a harbor, and so I began again. *:???:

I've just released my first assets and I decided to create a post not because there is much to see, but rather because as an inexperienced modeler it will be a good place to collect feedback and ask for advice. (I would like to keep the forum clean from my numerous questions!)
So my project is a modular medieval wall that is currently made out of 7 parts of a 6m high set. This is the short version, which is suitable for town walls, but a 12m set is planned. I might also do a 9m version but don't quote me on that.
The wall parts are based on the great "stone wall" template of Sparks, so they can be placed freely and conform to terrain. I tried to make their stats balanced in terms of entertainment value. I wanted the towers to avoid flattening the terrain and as I'm not good with playing with building's properties, I went with a water tower template without stats. It's not the most convenient but it works. It's also worth noting that the assets only really work well with an anarchy mod (especially the gates that I made without roads for more freedom).
Here is the link to the collection: http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=718095394
New short pieces and the tall set are on the way, but probably not before the end of July. You can leave suggestions or feedback so that I can improve my future assets!

So I figured I might as well make a topic here, as this is most likely not gonna be the last time I ask for you guys' oppinion.  If I remember, I'll post WIP and releases of my buildings here.
My current project is a bus depot that fits the european theme and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out - but I've ended up with two sizes of it and I just can't decide which I like the best and could see myself using both. So I'd love some feedback - which you prefer or if it makes sense to upload both of them.
The small one is about the same size as the default one and has the same stats. The large one has slightly higher stats, but as depots can spawn infinite busses there's no benefit to the bigger one. I purely made it this large as the ones I took inspiration from were this size or bigger.
      Picture time!
