Wow have I been having fun tonight!!!!

A while back my hard drive crashed. I had to buy a new PC.

So the other night I started setting up my SIMCITY files. Having to completely start over does have some benefits, I can organize the folders better this time.

Starting from scratch, I broke out my "STEX Collectors Edition" DVD's.

When trying to download one of "Peg CDK3" series selections, I was taken to a "SIMPEG4" webpage ----- what happened to just being able to download it from the disc? I had to register there i order to be able to download anything. Doe. Now, I click on one of the selections, because I always liked their work, and I see that there are "dependencies" so I click on that link. It takes me to another page, where I am now a "guest" so there isn't a link there to download the file. No matter what route I take I cannot get the download done.

So, I said "@#&*" -- and I came here to download the same files. Seems easy enough, I've downloaded countless files here. I searched for "Pegasus" files. Clicked on one. Downloaded it - no problems. Oh look it has a dependency -- click on that and a new window opens --- SPAM (I think) =  AdF.ly

This sure has been a fun afternoon / evening.

If you installed SC4 Deluxe from CD make sure you get all the patches to get the version of the game up to 1.1.638.  You can get them from SC4Devotion or from the pinned topic 'Get your Maxis files here' on this forum.

Okay. Most of Pegasus' files are already in his site, simpeg. Most of the dependencies especially the bsc ones are in sc4devotions. However the STEX in simtropolis still holds many files that does not need dependencies, some dependencies too are also located here in STEX. A reminder, simpeg, simtropolis and sc4devotions all need registration to be able to download. That ad.fly is just an advertisement, you can still access the site by clicking the skip button.

For comprehensive downloading you need accounts at Pegasus, SC4Devotion (and the LEX) as well as here.  And yes, I get thoroughly annoyed at Pegasus for not carrying over the login cookies at times.  However, I just sign on again.

On a restart all you really need initially are:

  1. The patches if you loaded from CD.

  2. The fixes, which are all on the STEX.

  3. The NAM, which has a link on the STEX.

After that, take your time and test as you go.

You had a hard drive crash and lost everything?  Ever heard of external backups?  I have two external HDDs, one of which is always off-line except for backup runs.  The other is also only for backups, but it is always on-line as it is the current backup device.  My system backs up every Thursday at midnight.  The off-line disk is used when I upgrade my O/S.

About a year ago, I lost my backup drive (I dropped it), and bought a new one.  After initialization and partitioning, I just ran a manual backup and since then all has been well.  There is always some risk, but I believe in insurance, and HDD backups are about the cheapest.

Some handsprings were required because the system had to be convinced that the new drive was the same as the old one.  Linux uses unique GUIDs to identify disk partitions and, of course, the new drive got new GUIDs.  Had to fix one system table.
