Sim City 4 Crashes when loading city tile

Probably need a bit more information to get any suggestions on this. You might want to give your system specifications - CPU, operating system, etc...

Also, was this a city that had been developed or is it new? Had you removed any plugins without demolishing existing items in the city - such as terrain/tree mods, airports, seaports, Mayor Mode ploppables (MMPs), etc.

Let us know...

  • I'm running XP Version 2002 SP3 with an Intel® Core Quad processor. At first I thought that a building I downloaded was the issue but sadly it was not

For openers you need to tame that quad processor.  Use the option -CPUCount:1 to force the O/S to recognize the single threading nature of SC4.

BTW, you could run this on Windows 7 (or 8 ) just as easily.

    How do i do that?

Your game starts from a short-cut on the desktop, I hope.  To implement the setup of a single processor you simply edit the short-cut target by doing this:

    1. Right click the short-cut and open the Properties page.  One of the elements is a text box with the name Target.  It contains the complete pathname of your game (in fact it is the console command to start the game).

    2. After the final quote in the pathname add the following: <space>-CPUCount:1

    3. Click the apply button then close the window.

Note that the term <space> means hit the space bar once.

There are a lot of options that can be added this way like words in a sentence.  Each one starts with a space followed by a hyphen ( -).  Here is the list of them.

And finally, as an example, here is my target line:

     "C:/Program Files (x86)/Maxis/SimCity 4 Deluxe/Apps/SimCity 4.exe"  -intro:off -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -d:directx  -f -CPUcount:1

This turns off the introduction movie, sets the game to use my 1080p screen, sets hardware rendering mode, full screen, and one processor.  Oh, and I am on Linux, so for the slashes (/) you need reverse slashes (\) in your pathname which should already be there.

    That didn't work

I'm considering to delete and reinstall simcity. Will that delete my plugins folder?

Don't do that unless you think your game is corrupt.  There is currently no such evidence.

    Test the game:

rename your plugins folder to plugins.old

    Start the game.

    Make a new sandbox region.

Open a city in this region.

If the game crashes, then do a reinstall.

If the game did not crash on this test then you either have a corrupt city or a plugin conflict.

If you can open other cities without a crash with your plugins in place, then it is probably a corrupt city if only opening a specific city produces the crash.

It is also possible that you have a plugin error due to several possible causes.  The most likely is that you have removed a plugin without first destroying anything in the city created by that plugin.

I think it is time for you to let us have all the gory details.

For openers, please post the first 20 lines only of your latest Exception Report.

Since you can't follow instructions I am not sure that you can be helped.  20 lines was all we needed.  However, we now can confirm that your game is fully updated version of Deluxe loaded from CD, and that you are running Windows 7.  The program tried to access a zero pointer.

Did you do the test with NO PLUGINs I specified?  If so, what were the results.  If not, please do so and post what happened.

Now, first: stop and take 10 deep breaths.  There is no panic, and this is only a game.  A number of players have had your problem in the last 10 years.

You probably have some plugins that disagree with each other, or you may have done a process switch (ALT+TAB or select a different window) while a save had not complete.  We need to determine which it is.  If it is the latter you have an unrecoverable corrupted city tile, and we'll have to try to take steps to recover it through extraordinary means.

If the former, we need to teach you how to find the conflicting mods and take action.  Please do the test.

Would you be able to help us catch up after a bit of a shortfall?

We had a small shortfall last month. Your donation today would help us catch up for this month.

Make a Donation, Get a Gift!

We need to continue to raise enough money each month to pay for expenses which includes hardware, bandwidth, software licenses, support licenses and other necessary 3rd party costs.

By way of a "Thank You" gift, we'd like to send you our STEX Collector's DVD. It's some of the best buildings, lots, maps and mods collected for you over the years. Check out the STEX Collections for more info.

Each donation helps keep Simtropolis online, open and free!

Thank you for reading and enjoy the site!
