Parking Garages

Hey Peeps,

Is there a trick to using parking garages with bus/train depots.  I believe I read that there needs to be one space between them for the sim to make the transition...which I do but I have yet to get my little simians to park at the garage.   If I'm lucky I will have 10 sims using it at most.

Tanks,

Kevin

They can be side-by-side as long as there is a road connecting them that the Sims can walk on.  The main trick to getting Sims to use parking facilities is to use the NAM, as Sims seem to ignore these facilities in the standard game.

Z1....thanks for the reply.  I do use NAM.....maybe I need to go into the traffic simulator and tweek it a bit more.

Generally, you'll find that won't make much of a difference.  (I gather you've discovered that, since you use the phrase "a bit more".)  To see a real difference in garage usage, you have to set up your transportation system so that parking in these garages is part of the Sims' fastest route to work.

I actually don't use parking garages anymore.  I found that even when properly placed and with NAM installed, the parking garages are hardly ever used.  It seems to be more effective to just place a large amount of mass transit stations that the sims can walk to throughout your city.

Parking garages are good only for extending the catchment area of mass-transit stations (sims will only walk just a few tiles, otherwise they will use their cars). They are meaningful only at the residential end of the commute path, as all workplaces in SC4 do have parking facilities. And not for all transit stations, only those who don't have built-in parking facilities - placing a parking lot next to such a station has no effect on commute, neither increases the main station's parking capacity. The ingame train stations do offer parking (utilising the park-and-ride feature), while all others don't. Custom content is typically (unless otherwise stated - specially modded) implemented the same way too.

Ground rail has its own parking.  Standard other mass transit generally has enough parking for the employees only.  A parking garage near a neighbourhood subway station, if there are few stations, should collect a number of users who drive then take the tube.
