Yosemite fire

I feel sorry for California sometimes. I once heard a prediction that there was going to be a major earthquake in 2010 or 2012 but forest fires, droughts, and pollution are hurting California more than the occasional earthquakes.

The entire National Park seems to be threatened

Per the map in the article, none of the park has been affected by the fire as of yet... and the fire is much smaller than the park, so that's a bit of an overstatement. And it is a big fire but again, per the article: California has seen 15 larger fires in recorded history.

This is one of those stories that seems bigger than it actually is since prior to today's world of social media and 24 hour news it would not have gotten nearly as much attention.

it would be tragic if the redwoods were burned down

While there are some redwoods in the area, main redwood country is a couple hundred miles away from where this fire is.

Yes Nonny, but that grove is only around 13 trees or so. And oddly enough, Sequoias are naturally resistant to fire. But just in case they've set sprinklers up for them.

Update on the story:

http://edition.cnn.com/2013/08/30/us/california-yosemite-wildfire/index.html?hpt=hp_t4

The fire has grown to be the 5th largest wildfire in California history, and is only about 30% contained, and is expected to burn for a while, but thankfully the main tourist area(Aka the valley) so far has escaped the threat....

  • The big trees in Yosemite are Sequoias.  They've survived fires before, and may need fire to continue to reproduce.
