Editing Ferries

I am going to edit the Ferries capacities.  I am going to use them extensively in m cities from here on out.  A capacity as high as 3000 as they are with the new NAM is just not high enough, especially if your areas are isolated and stacking the ferries all in one place looks stupid(to me it does anyway).

I found the exemplar that changes the capacity, "Catalog Capacity", is there anything else I need to change so that it functions properly or is that all I have to change?

Catalog Capacity just changes the displayed capacity.  Most ferry capacities, such as actual capacity, are hardwired.

Ferries are weird.

How about additional ferries, say Pegasus' ferries, can their numbers be altered then?  I know I still won't be able to have more than 16 in any given city tile, but seriously 1000-3000 is not enough, not even by a long shot.  I built a simple rural town the other day on an island and about 1 hour into playing I had about 10k Sims and my ferries were already completely overrun.  That is no good.  For ferries to be effective I really need at least 10k or higher, if not I could literally put all 8 on one bank and the remaining 8 on the other bank, and we are talking just a couple hours into playing a city tile, and they would still get overrun.

I don't think those figures are real.  There's a lot of evidence that ferries have infinite speed, which, by the way the game works, would imply that they have infinite capacity as well, despite what the display tells you.  Ferries appear to be run by the Black Hole Transportation Company - Ferry Division.  (The NAM put their Bus Division out of business.)

  • So they will never become traffic issues, by that I mean they won't turn red hurting the overall traffic numbers I see in my graphs chart?  They won't turn red and cause Jamil Herd to have a massive embolism?  Riots due to bad traffic?  Drop in mayor rating?  I don't doubt you, I am just seeking confirmation.  I found and read all of your...Traffic...ehrm...dissertation(I got jokes) by the way, it was good read.  You didn't say much about ferries though.  Sorry if I pester.

I'm glad you enjoyed my traffic dissertation!  The reason I didn't say much about ferries, and the reason you don't see anything about them in the Traffic Simulator Configuration Tool, is that they're so different from other travel types that there's almost nothing about them in the traffic simulator exemplar - only the single property Ferry Fare.  Ferries are unique in that they don't travel on a fixed network - they can take any path they want through the water.  But their travel type number is not unique - they share it with freight trucks!  If you're clever and quick, you can see this demonstrated in the Traffic Volume Data View.

The ferry routes will turn red if you have enough passengers, but it's doubtful that this means anything, or has any consequences.  And traffic riots occasionally do happen with regular traffic (quite a rarity!), but they happen only where the bad traffic is, so it's hard to imagine Sims rioting in the water.  Bad traffic affects the local mayor rating only, which then affects the buildings around the traffic; since there are no buildings in the water, you don't have to worry about that with ferries.  But even at their terminals, I don't think this is a problem, because of their essentially incomplete implementation.  You can look at the desirability data view to verify this.

I use the ferries pretty extensively in my current region. I do have many many sims using them as well. Some of the ferry paths are blood red, but it doesn't seem like anyone complains about it. Or even when the ferry station is maxed out.

The only problem I get from heavy usage on the ferries, is the network leading up to them gets jammed up pretty bad. But having to figure out the best way to funnel them in or redirect is half the fun of the game.
