Experienced BATers: any tips for a new guy

After the disappointment that was Sim City 2013, I figured I should make my own BATs. I have a couple questions after playing around with it

1. How big is something in the game compared to something in BAT?

2. How do people take in-game buildings into lots on the STE

3. How long does a good BAT take to make?

Thanks for the help in advance

1. In the BAT, if it's right, each unit is 1 meter. Since 1.0 m = 3,281 ft. = 39,37 in. you can get the figures. Since a tile in SimCity 4 is 16 x 16 meters large. Due to scaling errors on Maxis' side, each floor needs to be about 4 m tall (instead of 3 m in Real Life). What you can do is try to dimension the building with the right dimensions first and then scale the whole model 133% vertically.

2. I'm not understanding the question. Could you rephrase it?

3. Depends on the complexity, size and precision of the BAT, as well as your experience with the tools. For instance, I can create a streetlight model in 20 minutes, but that's because it's a small and simple model and I have quite some experience with the tools. Buildings take days or weeks for me, but I don't have as much precision as the top-notch BATters here. Modding and BATting takes a lot of patience and effort.

Furthermore, you can check the Omnibus for tutorials.

Best,

Maarten

  • For question #2, I mean that I see lots on simtropolis that have Wren Insurances (WHY?  You can get that be default?) and othedr buildings joined in on one lot.  If you have seen these, how can it be done.

First, you will need the Maxis building props sets, then you can use the Lot Editor and join a Maxis building (which is recognized as a prop by LE) with another maxis building or custom building. And don't forget to save the lot. You can join some custom building with another with one requirement, there is a prop version of the building.
