Indiana gas explosion kills 2, injures 7, and damages three dozen homes

Yikes. That's a very bad one.

When I was a kid, a gas explosion happened less than a mile away but "all" it did was lift the house and drop it four inches away and kill three people inside. (A fourth escaped.) They found it was a faulty gas junction and replaced all of them in town, including the one across the street from my house.

This one looks like a couple of houses were just obliterated.

Natural gas is colourless, odourless and tasteless. This is why a little ethyl mercaptan is added to it, so that you can smell it. This organic is supposed to be noticeable in very few parts per billion.

Ordorants are only added to natural gas in the final stages of delivery for commercial services. Even if odorants were present in the gas, it's possible that they wouldn't have been detectable. We don't know enough about the situation to speculate.
