Overcrowded Stations...

In my city of around 50,000 people, I have run into a huge error-overcrowding at subway and train stations. I have, in many cases, installed 2 right next to each other to attempt to "balance" the load, but usually, it won't work. For example, I had a train station, that was running at 317% over capacity. I put in a train station right next to it. The original went down to 93%, and the new one was 257% over capacity. Please help-I can't figure out how to even out the loads without destroying half my city to overhaul my rail and subway systems.

Here are some pictures:

This is why I always just custom-edit stations to match line capacity in the ilive reader. If the NAM has a rail line set for 16000, that's what I set the station to. Maxis stations are, to be frank, unrealistically low when it comes to capacity.

The only other advice I can give is to not use Maxis stations, and download ones here that have a higher capacity that is closer to what you need.

If you are overwhelmed by the ilive Reader, simply download some stations. There are many on the STEX.

The thing is, overcrowded stations don't actually make a difference in Sims' commutes. It looks bad on the map, but Sims will happily go through a crowded subway station and it won't negatively affect them.

From what I recall, Z did quite a bit of testing for the RTMT project to set the capacities, and in the end it turned out that it doesn't matter (except if you hit some super large number).

You can read more about it here.

Those numbers aren't that high really. Maxis capacities are just too low and unrealistic. I have several stations in my system that have over 100,000 riders. Maxis stations have no place on trunk lines. Maybe the last stop in suburbia.

A good point. I often put passenger stations on spurs and sidings.

Exactly. The numbers we found weren't all that high - they started at 400%, and most weren't much higher than that. That means that a Maxis train station with a nominal capacity of 2000 stops working for the day after about 8000 Sims have passed through it. Definitely not good for a trunk line with 100,000 riders.
