Pit and Balcony Theater, part of the Smalltown, USA Series by JBSimio
The Pit & Balcony Theater has been sitting forgotten in my folder for quite some time and is now released at the request of several fans of this series. Since this is a somewhat unplanned release, I really don’t have a cute story to go with it. Instead, I will just mention how this BAT came about. The model is loosely based on a real theater in Saginaw, MI named “The Court Theater” located on Court Street several blocks from where I grew up. In my lifetime, it has always been a second run movie theater. My earliest memory is of seeing E.T. there and thinking that someday I would like to have Drew Barrymore as a girlfriend… who am I kidding? That would still be nice! The Court has closed and reopened several times under different owners. Recently, I understand that the interior has been renovated, although the exterior still carries the somewhat shabby look that I used in this model.
The name “Pit & Balcony” comes from another real theater in Saginaw. I chose it mostly because Court wouldn’t fit on the marquee and I thought it would be funny if the sign just read “PIT.” The real Pit & Balcony is primarily a live stage theater with local productions of plays, musicals, and ballets. As far as I know, it still operates this way, though I haven’t been inside either theater since moving away from
