I've been watching the member population count at the bottum of the forums page closely during the last few months as it slowly but steadily climbs to that number that is 450,000 registered users. Right now we are just below 449,000 members and it looks as though Simtropolis will hit a registered population of 450,000 members come January. What do you think of those numbers? Maybe when we get closer to the actual number we could hold a contest to determine on what date the population will hit 450,000 people.

I think the day Simtropolis hits 450,000 members we should hold the trixies. Now that would be cool. :)

But the numbers are huge. 450,000 is about the population of Las Vegas, Denver, New Orleans or Luxembourg. :O

That number is the number of registered members and not the number of active members. I don't think membership in this site ever expires.

I do remember about a year ago the 450,000 member number came up but then Simtropolis did some un-active user cleaning and the population dropped 100,000. I don't think the membership numbers will ever be accurate because of people who left the site years ago or who are registered but never use it, but it is a good rough estimate of our population.

There have been a handful of large-scale cleanings that I can remember...one right after I joined lowered the user count by something like 50k. Nevertheless, 450k is a massive number. About 4 and a half times more than it was when I joined. I've been lurking here since 2004 and registered in 2005...though my profile says member number 70,889, I believe I'm actually somewhere between 110k-115k. This would make sense because I remember changing my signature in celebration of 150k members not too long after I joined. 6 and a half years later and that has nearly tripled...pretty respectable growth, if you ask me.

However, in terms of active users, it's a totally different story. A couple months ago I did a little post count study and found that the number of users who have ever posted (according to the current memberlist) is something like 33k, and a mere tenth of that 33k has made more than 50 posts. Furthermore, a tenth of that 3.3k has passed the 1,000 post mark. So in terms of the forum regulars, the numbers are much smaller - it's a minority of the members making the majority of the posts.

So, I have a BAT thread. It's nothing much, but you can find it here:

The members list has a last visit and last post filter. But what would the definition of active be for Simtropolis?

Sniper296 raises a good point here. For most new users, "to be active" is to download stuff from the STEX as it was going to shut down tomorrow. However, another person could have another vision, and to be active would mean to make at least one forum post a week; but this would be unfair for users who only move inside the CJ section and never venture in the forums.

It's more difficult than that, I guess.

^ Good points. I think it is really impossible to know the number of "active" members on a site as diverse as this. I am sure many register only for downloads, others for the CJ's, and others like myself for the forums with an occasional adroit dip into the STEX. I almost never visit the CJ section, but I do direct people there.

I only turn up in chat and occasionally download, so i would be seen as unactive. Used to post in forums, but my post count slowed down.

Total Members: 450,004 The 450,000th member is AnnexDNB! (I'm pretty sure...) I think he should win some kind of award for that.
It is possible that it is "I Am Me" A user that joined 17 minutes ago and still validating. It says user #461724, but I think that includes the members that were "cleaned out". I had to go to the last page and use the join date filter and count 4 down to get this...

I would say "active" as in a certain amount of time logged onto the site, that way it covers all the bases from STEX to forums to CJs.

It may reach 450,000 but how many of them are active and devoted to Simcity? I'm sure a large portion of that number is people who don't visit the site anymore. Quality over quantity. Nevertheless, it is quite a milestone!

If I am right, an active member has to have posted and last visited on New Year's Eve. That means that according to the filter, there are only 3,062 currently active members.

I say that an active member is one that spends at least 5 hours a week (on average) logged onto Simtropolis and posts something (CJ, forum, status, comment on STEX download, etc) at least once a month. Using that definition, we have quite a few active members but not nearly as many as 450,000.
