SimCity Developer Working on New AAA Game: “Critical” for Maxis’ Growth

    Haljackey

While SimCity received a mixed welcome due to server problems and always online features, Maxis’ Emeryville studio has been working hard on improving it and correcting the nags, including the recent removal of said always online requirement. Apparently, though, they’re ready to move on to something new, as shown by a career opportunity ad seeking a Director of Product Development.

Here’s an excerpt, with the relevant parts underlined:

Our Maxis Emeryville studio is seeking you as our Director of Product Development or Senior Development Director on a new AAA PC game! This project represents a critical piece of Maxis’ strategy for growth and requires a leader who can pull from his experience, energy and creativity to attack new challenges. Reporting to the Studio GM, you will have a unique opportunity to join the studio’s leadership staff and lead a newly formed team within Maxis. As Director or Product Development for this new game, you will be in charge of defining development strategy and successfully managing it to quality, time and budget goals.

We are looking for a professional with in-depth knowledge of game development acquired by having led the delivery of AAA and/or mobile game franchises. This role requires highly developed relationship building skills, the ability to build credibility and influence within and outside the Studio. It also requires comfort in using multiple leadership and partnering styles (e.g. coach; mentor; directive/prescriptive as required), and an ability to engage, lead, and influence meaningfully at all levels.

Apparently the project is a new AAA PC exclusive like SimCity was. Normally EA’s career opportunity ads mention it when it’s a new IP, so it’ll be possibly a return of one of Maxis’ existing intellectual property, or maybe a sequel of SimCity itself.

The mention of experience on mobile games is interesting. While the game is indicated as a PC title, it could involve some mobile interaction, but of course this is just my personal speculation.

What we do know is that the gears are grinding at Maxis Emeryville, and it’s for something big. We’ll keep you updated on any info that will surface about it in the future.

Interesting, will look forward to see how this will be implemented, if at all. Fool us once Maxis, but will you fool us twice? I hope not.

I hope... for whatever new game they come up with, sim city or not, that they save themselves and head in a new direction. Hopefully retain some control over the idiots running EA

I tend to not take news seriously on April Fools Day =P. Best wishes to them though.

By the timid repercussion  given the "Output" of Stone Librande of Maxis as well as the official launch of the path that brings offline mode think that matter New Simcity  not even serves for a good joke on April Fools Day

Wow this is saddening. I assume this probably means SC13 is now no longer being worked on. It was kind of already speculated with the release of offline mode. We may possibly see one final patch but I seriously doubt it. I would imagine this "AAA" game will be along the lines of CoD or something because those are the big money makers.... How sad.

Honestly, what I would want is for them to rebuild glassbox or something. Making it possible for larger maps and with a lot more features, buildables and addons. I would even be willing to pay AAA price AGAIN for this if they could just get it right. I seriously want simcity to be the game we all want, but I just don't think it will ever happen... le sigh

An employment ad?  Shouldn't cause too much of a flap.  Unannounced new game could be something other than a city builder.

Beware the early hype.  Remember the SimCity hype of a few years ago.  More glassbox?  Oh, please, no!

My advice is to keep it simple and creative.  The latest Simcity focused too much on Data and not providing enough of the tools necessary to be creative, ie. unlimited map size, ability to add custom content and realism. Unfortunately, we received neither these 2 very basic tools that allow a player to be able to create as he or she chooses. Take SC4, it continues to reinvent itself because it provides tools to be creativity and customizable.

Excited? No.  Cautiously optimistic? Yes.  There is new leadership at EA, and they have a good probablility of learning from past mistakes. It's just a matter of follow through.  They have to hit this one out of the park, just to get back on many peoples' radar again.

Well, yes.  New management at EA and the flower children have bailed out of Maxis studio.  One can only wait and see.

Beware of market hype, my son,

The ads that bite, the sounds that catch,

Beware the U-tube bit, and shun

    The frumious glassbox patch.

I could care less what title EA puts out, they won't see another one of my shiny dimes till they can prove they can put out a solid product and stop raping their customers.

I have zero faith in anything developed from them. They would have to do some kind of miracle to get me to look at another game title.
