  • After Dark Expansion released for Cities: Skylines!

    Cyclone Boom

Paradox have released After Dark, the first expansion for Cities: Skylines.

Building on the features from the base game, a range of new gameplay and simulation options are introduced, giving greater control of how your city interacts and functions.

It includes ways to specialise district areas (e.g. leisure & tourism), and changes in activity based on the new day/night cycle. There's also expanded city services and additional transportation options, including bike & bus lanes!

In After Dark, players of Cities: Skylines will meet all-new challenges in planning, maintaining, and expanding their cities, as they discover the unique needs and quirks of the populace after the sun goes down. In-game citizens will seek out entertainment and leisure once the work day is over, while the criminal element will also become more active, requiring new strategies and solutions for a city’s services, traffic, and tourism. After Dark includes:

    • Take a Tour: New tourism specializations will add high-rise hotels and other attractions for out-of-town visitors, including beach facilities if placed near the water

    • Share the Roads: New bus lanes and bicycle lanes allow cities to take advantage of alternate transportation options; new taxi system helps ferry tourists around town

    • Sunset Services: City services can be scheduled during different times on the day-and-night cycle, allowing for trash pickup at night and more public transit during the day

    • A Night Out after Lights Out: New night-time leisure districts can be designated, leading to the arrival of nightclubs, bowling alleys, karaoke bars, and more

    • Fighting Crime and Doing Time: An increase in criminal activity at night will lead to new police activity, while new prisons can be built to contain miscreants

Hey Azurespecter....This is a major turning point for the game. I really like the new features and how everything is at night. I love seeing the sun rise and set. I'm getting a kick out of the updated assets with lights now. But my peeve is daytime destroying our textures. I hope it gets fixed asap. Other than that, I think the expansion is great and I'm already losing sleep playing and making stuff for it. So yeah, your assumption that many of us are busy playing is correct.

I like, the pictures of the night time, especially from a far; are probably the most photo realistic things I've ever seen from a city builder. Some cities from a far back view at night if you took a screen cap and told me it was the view out of a plane at 30,000 ft. I'd believe you with out much second guessing and in that regard the expansion is a massive success.

I'm still working out the kinks of the new transportation options, and just starting to play with the new commercial specialty tools but they seem to add a new layer of depth to an already pretty deep game.

I hope to see seasons next because I think it follows a logical progression of adding a night time and really the cool things that come with it as well as the pretty things it make possible. Season brings I think the next level of both of those and is something that any prior Sim City franchise has yet to touch (and with the exception to Banished is mostly ignored in the genre)

So in short, my review is mostly positive but its still very early. I look forward to when more of the mods get upto steam (no pun intended)

So many awesome little features that really make the game come alive and more interesting. Combined with the fact I just got the mod that adds 3 and 4 lane one way roads its a completely different playing experience for me its awesome! So many more ways to play with the inclusion of things like the bus station and bike lanes and paths I'm scheming a bunch of new cities up

I have a couple of older cities where the light commercial tax revenue has basically gone ridiculously negative and they have become crime-ridden cesspools.  I had intended to explore the new features in new cities anyway, but it still kind of stinks.

Got the After Dark Hotfix mod, and now I can play. Man, my city looks COMPLETELY different after dark!
