Entries in this City Journal

IL.

This is the southern district of the Hill Metropolis.

It is more difficult to build a city here, yet urbanisation doesnt have a limit.

From a small mountain town to a large metropolis, the population is around 100k, living in a high density city, yet very confortable, amazing views everywhere, and green lush parks and natural reservations at the reach of every sims.

There is alot of activity in the city, you can either spend your holidays in the beautifull country side, or at the mountain natural jungle (as well as the urban jungle), spend the whole day relaxing at the beach and the beautifull hotels.

This city simply has it all, it use green and efficient power sources such as the waves, wind power, and the most important of them all, the thermal power sources as this is city is built on a mountanious terrain. It is also famous of it's high tech industry (mainly green high tech) and hundreds of large companies.

There isn't much room for agricultural zones here, but the avaible agricultural lands and the skyfarms, also the aquatic farms, provide an important amount of the food basics for the city, ennuf to reduce importing the food from the neighboring cities.

The most difficult thing in this city is managing the traffic, and it is well managed.

It have a large complex infrastructure, tunnels and bridges everywhere, swirling around the mountains and the difficult topologies.

The Hill Metropolis

It have been a while since I was at Simtropolis or posted anything.

I have made many cities that I didn't post in my CJ.

I will start with this city.

Most of the cities I have built are located in a mountainious area at the San Fransico map at Simcity4, the best terrain to enjoy building a city is a mountainious one, it presents alot of challenge to make the city look smooth and realistic (not some 90° roads and stuff like that).

I hope that you like the theme.

P.s.: These are some virgin images (not edited).

As you go down the page, the density of the city will decrease.

My cities always have some ruins and buildings from the past, a city must always try to preserve it's heritage.

The city that you can't say it's name.

This city have been growing rapidly in the last 10 years due to globalisation, after being a small ancient town (that is all what is left from a once great city and a naval empire) with it's remaining walls and ruins.

The fast urbanisation created many problems like pollution and traffic, but it is changing from better to better everyday.

TempluY.jpg

Sihvregsكhf斯sdvجwew克xvcريfa菲zecmكlpcocwرxret is every mayor's dream, it combines culture and history with the modern world, it's roughly unique in my CJ, but it's different. It's very dense comparing to the other cities, with all of it's wall to wall building and small appartements in the city center, but it's alot more spacious and confortable outside that area.

LXmOCpM.jpg

JbLzRzL.jpg

Despite all these tall skyscrapers, old and traditional buildings that make the city's indentity are still thriving in the city pockets between the big skyscrapers that are almost taking over the city.

You can also see that the city have a rich architectural style from the various civilisations that passed threw this city, to make the city as it is today (more pictures and scenes will come).

No past no future right?

Cj9GXqa.jpg

y8UsDaT.jpg

Now getting closer the coasts, the city density decrease, you start to see the sky, you also get to see more old and small buildings.

Also alot less pollution and more fresh air.

Cs1FsCM.jpg

This part of the city have many hotels, restaurents, shops, etc..

43hU8bh.jpg

This part of the city that is outside the citywalls, is rather new, and it's main activity is tourism, you can see alot of shops and modern buildings here, also many houses for rent, it's still under developement and construction... (Next update)

cNv5Qcc.jpg

because of the historical value of the city walls and the other ruins, also the high cliff, it's abit difficult to go down from the main city to the shores, so to preserve the city walls and to make this part of the city more connected and increase buisness in it, many tunnels have been built connecting it to the rest of the city.

e3y3epq.jpg

There are also many educational and research instiutions in this part of the city.

See you in the next Update:

The coral coasts

The city's coasts are full of the sea wonders and natural wild life, with clear beaches all along the way wich made the city almost unique.

The city makes sure that those reefs are kept safe, and that people can enjoy discovering this environement and learning about it, and taking advandage from the sunny beaches.

ydoSLa4.jpg

PTpYxY6.jpg

eHuSvFM.jpg

pypVa53.jpg

b2iWFiX.jpg

The city also try to get the most possible use of these refes and waters, without damaging them.

Those are some wave power plants, they collect power from the waves and the sun, to power the nearby tower.

Bw6nrNP.jpg

PKXJvkh.jpg

EMjYvY1.jpg

The sims enjoy these reefs and aqua environement, and have respect for it.

tPdZxwZ.jpg

Some sims like to spend their nights on the beache.

Oh look, some turtules are doing each other underwater near the rocks, isn't nature beautifull?

(If you know what I mean.)

GbPQAKp.jpg

vYo8MjR.jpg

The city have many aqua institutions, and aqua farms, it is the future of agriculture.

The city aqua agriculture provide many goods, like different kinds of fish, marine alage, and many others, all that without affecting the native environement.

The principal of the city, is live with nature, not against nature.

BQLi8uN.jpg

It also brings alot of money and tourism...

GIXBRTo.jpg

UOjVA4c.jpg

The other side of the bay doesnt have much of reefs or wild life, so it used for industrual purposes.

More informations here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kairouan

The city I made isn't exactly like the real life, and some parts of it are from history (like the canals and the too many water bassins)

y56qv6C.jpg

One of the few remainings of the once great Islamic civlisation.

Kairouan have been built around 50 Hejri (the Islamic dating), wich correspond to the year 670 A.C. by Uqba Ibn Nafae.

It was built far from the coasts (to be safe from the sea empires, like the byzantine empire), and away from the mountains (to be safe from berbers who lived in mountains).

Kairouan was founded in about the year 670 when the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi of Amir Muauia selected a site in the middle of a dense forest, then infested with wild beasts and reptiles, as the location of a military post for the conquest of the West. It was located far from the sea where it was safe from continued attacks of the Berberswho had fiercely resisted the Arab invasion. Berber resistance continued, led first byKusaila whose troops killed Uqba at Biskra about fifteen years after the military post was established,[8] and then by a Berber woman called Al-Kahina who was killed and her army defeated in 702. Subsequently, there was a mass conversion of the Berbersto Islam. Kharijites or Islamic "outsiders" who formed an egalitarian and puritanical sect appeared and are still present on the island of Djerba. In 745, KharijiteBerberscaptured Kairouan, which was already at that time a developed city with luxuriant gardens and olive groves.

AVkEGxy.jpg

The city was established on a dense forest, to become a military base, and a post for troops conquering North Africa.

Later it became a very important center for both relegious and secular, reaching it's golden age after a period of power struggles.

It was even larger than the modern day Kairouan.

bUoQ4jS.jpg

Power struggles remained until Kairouan was recaptured by Ibrahim ibn al-Aghlab at the end of the 8th century. In 800, Ibrahim was confirmed Emir and hereditary ruler of Ifriqiya byCaliph Harun ar-Rashid in Baghdad. Ibrahim ibn al-Aghlab founded the Aghlabid dynasty that ruled Ifriqiya between 800 and 909. The new Emirs embellished Kairouan and made it their capital which soon became famous for its wealth and prosperity reaching the levels of Basraand Kufa and giving Tunisia one of its golden ages long sought after the glorious days ofCarthage.

The Aghlabites built the great mosque and established in it a university that was a centre of education both in Islamic thought and in the secular sciences. Its role can be compared to that of the University of Paris in the Middle Ages. In the 9th century, the city became a brilliant focus of Arab and Islamic cultures attracting scholars from all over the Islamic World. In that period Imam Sahnun and Asad ibn al-Furat made of Kairouan a temple of knowledge and a magnificent centre of diffusion of Islamic sciences. The Aghlabids also built palaces, fortifications and fine waterworks of which only the pools remain. From Kairouan envoys fromCharlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire returned with glowing reports of the Aghlabitespalaces, libraries and gardens – and from the crippling taxation imposed to pay for their drunkenness and sundry debaucheries. The Aghlabite also pacified the country and conquered Sicily in 827.[9]

d2f8Ic8.jpg

But there are dark times to come, Kairouan have been fully devastated and burned down by some tribes coming from the middle-east, trying to find lush areas to survive.

Kairouan have been destroyed, but it survived and built new walls (smaller walls) and shrunk back to provide more security for the city.

The decline of the dynasty began under Ibrahim II ibn Ahmad (875-902). An attack by the Tulunids of Egypt had to be repelled and a revolt of the Berbers put down with much loss of life. In addition, in 893 there began amongst the Kutama Berbers the movement of theShiite Fatimids to overthrow the Aghlabids. Ubaydalla Said captured the cities of Qairawan and Raqqada and took an oath of allegiance from the people. By 909, the Aghlabid Dynasty was overthrown and replaced with the Fatimids.[3]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aghlabids

It was a rich gene pool, there have been many nationalities and races; europeans, berbers, andalusians, arabs, africans, turkish, etc.. no wonder for a city that had such big importance and history (wich started to fade away by time, and the population diversity declined).

Kairouan today have 4 aghlabid bassins (and alot more either burried or neglected) and canals connecting these bassins to provide the city with fresh water.

In Kairouan and in most of the old arab cities, every market have a specialty (like the leather market, the iron market, clothes market, etc...) (like a mall in modern day).

Today, Kairouan still have a great carpet markets (expensive ones):

Small towns are spreaded all along the coasts.
Those towns are little independent from the rest of the city, they are mostly self porwered, by either solar power and wind power.

Because of an accident that happened few years ago, the people of the town decided to ask the central city infrastructre ministry to build a bridge over the rails that passes just next to the town.
This rail is the fastest connection between the town and the rest of the towns and the city, and the rest of the region.
The rest are some unpaved roads and mountains paths.

This is an old mosque down the mountain.
Mosques are usually close to where people live, because muslims pray 5 times a day.
The reason that it is there, that it is some of the remainings of the ancient city.

xVETp.jpg

A larger view of the town:

U5dch.jpg

I think that you did notice that small street.
There is a tunnel that goes threw the mountain to the town, to make the transportation easier and faster.
You can either use your car, or use an eletric tram, kinda of a clined elevator, an upgrade of an ancient escaping stairway that go threw the mountain, passing by some mines.

Because of the small open spaces in the mountain, there are some parkings under ground too, and down the moutain.

Some ancient arabian cities (like Kairouan, Jerusalam, and others...), had a whole system of tunnels almost under each house and building, that leads outside the city walls or to safe areas.

Off the record:
Some tunnels in high tension areas are still used today, like in Palastine, where Palastinians used them to transport food and supplies to the cities under siege by the occupier.
& in some other case for escape of the attacks.
Intill recently, most tunels are discovered and bombarded.

I wish if simcity 4 had the option of the street views like in City life (by Montecristo).

The nuclear facility..

If you are bothered to read all that, here's a in short lines:

The city built a nuclear facility for it's growing power needs, and for it's reduced cost comparing with the renewebal energy resources.
The nuclear facility is totally safe and secure, and the waste is well managed, and the purpose of the facilityis totally peacefull...but the costs tell a whole different story..

The city is growing day after day, andt he need for power is also growing day after day.
Trying to prove all the city needs of power with renewebal resources, requires alot of money, while building a peacefull nuclear facility is way cheaper.

The facility was built to handle a 9 degrees earth quake, not to mention tornados and even some bomb attacks in case of a terrorist attack or war.
It also have a volt beneath it for the refugees in case of big war with nuclear or biological weapons.

The facility is totally secured, in case of a leak, or a damage to the facility, an under-ground water reservoirs cool the power plant, and another huge one ensure that no radi active materials leaks out of the facility in case of a major catastrophy.

As for the radio-active waste, it is recycled in many special waste management centers around the city, then burried under ground in some far away empty zones in the region,  in law quantities so it does not harm the environement or the animal life, and trees will do the rest.

Knowing that the city have huge amounts of Phosphate, wich Uranium can be extracted from it.
The avaible Uranium is ennuf to power the region for 800 years.

So why not use it?

But the costs seems to be telling a whole different story...

Ambitious project.

This city is an obtious future for a greener life, and less oil consumtion, and alot of suffencency.
Nothing is lost, everything is recycled.

In this city, traditions and the past heritage, have a big presence and influence in the modern architecture too, and also the ancient ruins and buildings that shows the age of the city and it's prosperity during it's history, as well it's sad part of history (wars, as you see the ruins of the ancient forteress and stuff).

Population: 11 000 000

Economy: Mainly tourism, then industry and agriculture.

Political situation: democratic regime.

The city main commercial and buisness district, depends heavily on electric trams for transportation, and pedestrian-only streets, aswell the old town (the touristic) area.
Hoping for a more healthy and sainstable future.

8VcQJ.jpg

This big building and it's surrounding, is a very important part of this city economy, it have the main banks and administrative centers of the city.

Ue8zB.jpg

But the city as a whole is still not fully sainstable, half of the city depends heavily on roads and avenues, future plans will try to reduce the need for cars in this city by making more public transportation systems to replace the need for cars, and saving millions of dollars of oil importation.

t5nRv.jpg

This is a one more example from the city main economical center.

scR0T.jpg

A new concept of agriculture is rising in the city, it's the vertical farms, since most of the city population is living in urban areas, and the aims to creat a sunstable community, sims started to welcome this concept, and finally it became real.
& it's fully organic and natural.

This is a small mountain village that have some snow falls each year (I think you noticed the rectangular roofs) and right next to it, a well known univercity, that keeps the village alive with the hundreds of students coming each year.

Now we are back to the lake, wich is a greta tourist attraction, that enjoy a lovely medeterranian weather and architecture (north African to be little more precise).
I think you did notice the old forteresse on the hill and right next to it, a lighthouse.
This spot is a perfect place for tourists who want to be calm.

You may want to see the other side of the lake in the previous entries of this city journal.
I hope you liked it.
Enjoy your vacation.

The water front

New investements have been made by many local buisness men on the coastal area, to take advandage of the summer's sunny weather, and the nice beaches.

7j9ho.jpg

The town is still eco-friendly, with solar powered buildings, and vertical wind power turbines ( that makes no noise pollution).

heClE.jpg

Some hotels, appartements, museums and etc... have been built here.

There's a party going on there :

qMzoq.jpg

The city is expanding and keeping it's eco-friendly nature, it's energy needs comes from renewbal energies, and from thermal energy.

The city tech center have developed a new vertical wind power turbines, that causes no noise pollution, they can be placed either in a low density urban area, towns, or the country side, they only provide about 35% of the city needs so far, the rest are from solar power, and thermal power, and some waste recycling, not to mention the seld powered buildings.

The main land city

Now we are back from the mountains and from the small towns, to the main land over the other side of the lake.

This part of the city, isnt so different from the town, except that it's larger, more active economicly, and also a better infrastructure.

aaOYm.jpg

It's also a crossing point between some other neighboring cities.

The city mayor, with some investors, are planning to start using those beautifull, natural beaches. (Wich will be in the next update)

QZ2Kl.jpg

This is an important economic district for the city, with some banks and companies.

Also the main police station and justice departement.

Moving more to the west, you start seing some appartements and homes, schools, mosques, and few shops and office buildings around here and there.

bt3Qt.jpg

DDXOK.jpg

The city is also eco friendly in most of it's needs.

But there's no fear from any pollution, since the city is full of trees and floras.

It's energy comes from the wind power mills up in the hills and mountains, near the small town across the lake.

Also some solar powered buildings, as the city don't have much oil, but it is ennuf for it's needs, so they try to go green, by using solar power (as there's alot of sun light around here) and also wind power (but it's not being very encouraged because of the noise that it makes, new wind power mills are being developed for that purpose in the city tech center)

(The main energy sources will be posted in the next update)

MJphd.jpg

This is the central hospital, most of it's light power needs comes from the solar boards up on the roof (the light utulities like lamps, are also energy efficient), also some solar water heaters.

Fivil.jpg

Some appartements, an office building, a mosque, and a public swimming pool, and a fountain.

VD12R.jpg

This is the city tech center that I mentioned earlier, the building right next to it, is an arts school, and a library.

A part of the tech center is also a school.

IDTQw.jpg

As we are going south, there are more shops and commercial buildings.

Some small police posts.

An office building and few shops, appartements...

Some shops around here and there, parks and green areas..

The tour is over.

I'll see you in the next update.

New expansion

22vNX.jpg

The small town is slowly growing and developing, keeping it's natural views and it's eco-friendly techs ( power, water, garbage treatment).

UQu1v.jpg

The town is becoming more active in tourism, and in trade, wich is growing slowly.

roeof.jpg

More to come :D

I'll post the main-land town next time.

Paradise on earth

This town may look like the town of Sidi Bousaid; in Tunisia.

This town was built by a man who was searching for inner peace and relaxing.

In the 12th century/13th century AD Abou Said ibn Khalef ibn Yahia Ettamini el Beji arrived in the village of Jabal el-Menar and establishes a sanctuary. After his death in 1231, he was buried there, and then, the village started to be built by time...

Back to the sc4 part:

This is my new town

It have some magnificent natural views, and fresh air, life here is calm and peacefull.

People here, earn there living by fishing, some tourism, and services, also selling what they don't need from power.
