-The Rock of Mariae -

Part I

gassian93.jpg

Father of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, François of Clairvoux signed and sealed in 1157 a deed of gift by Prince Henri of Bordeaux. He lived in a small castle on the Eyre River. The romanesque building in the basement of the house Clairvoux are still preserved. The castle was built in a strategic location. Surrounded on three sides by the Eyre River, stands out the fortress. The builders were based on the architecture of the natural conditions.

gassian94.jpg

The castle was expanded further and further. By brisk trade in wines and skillful diplomacy led to the imposing castle. This is also the birthplace of Saint Bernard of Clairvoux.

gassian95.jpg

Mariae lies on a small island in the middle of the Eyre River.

gassian96.jpg

The entire Eyre valley is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

gassian97.jpg

gassian98.jpg

gassian99.jpg

The name "Mariae" is based on a legend of the daughter of Bernard's XI. of Clairvoux. Mariae should be drowned at age of 16 in the wake of Eyre River and her body remained missing(in~1568). It has spread the legend that she was banished to the depths and may only appear as a mermaid.

meerjungfrau.jpg

Mariae should have been spotted on a nearby rock. She was sitting on the rock and was combing her long golden hair and lured unwary sailors with her songs and her beauty.

gassian100.jpg

The Parisian sculptor Claude Erik (1876-1959) created in 1913 the sculpture of "Little Mermaid", which became a landmark of Rondnoir. Today the legend is told of the "Little Mermaid Mariae". A popular destination for tourists and romantic place for weddings.

- The Monastery of Sacre Mariae -

sacremariaenadel.jpg

Founded in 1262 by the Cistercian Order, not least because of the impetus of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1190-1269). The vineyards of Sacre Mariae are among the oldest and best in the wine region of Bordeaux.

gassian78.jpg

The monastery is located in a natural valley on the Eyre River. Surrounded by the vineyards. Near the castle of Mariae.

gassian79.jpg

gassian89.jpg

The Cistercians created in the centuries one of the best wines of the region; "Sacré Gouttelettes"..

gassian77.jpg

sacremariaenadeli.jpg

The Romanesque cloister has been operated since 1960 under the auspices of the Prince Foundation like many historic places in Rondnoir, still ~ 90 monks lives in the monastery and manage the vineyards.

In the world wars, the monastery was used as a sanatorium for war victims. In 1948 began the reconstruction of the winery. A photo from 1948.

Tutorial

-MMP Cornfields-

No annoying Lots, no annoying work with diagonal parts. That allows gridless work with the corn-props.

What we need(only for the barley field):

Paeng's SPAM Addon Pack Vol01 1.0 + Dependencies

HBS Tropical Flora Pack (Mayor Mode) 1

SG Tractor MM Ploppables BSC

optional:

SC4 Model Tweaker

For my purposes, the grain models are unfortunately too large. Using the Tweaker to shrink models. In my example, the grain models are a little smaller than the download version.

Let us begin..

A normal field in Gassian ..

tut1g.jpg

We begin to limit our field with the HBS Mode and set individual Mudfields(Spam-Addon), especially at the beginning of the field.

tut2fz.jpg

Now we create some details. We plop harvesters and tractors on the Mudfields(SG Tractor). You can create some simple 1x1 lots with the LE that make a field more realistic...I only use some sunflowers on a 1x1 lot and a small Tractor scene..

tut3d.jpg

tut4c.jpg

Next we plant the corn(MMP Paengs SPAM) (in my example: barley)We use the boundaries of the field and create a harvest scene. The barley is planted like any other MMP Bush or Tree.

tut5t.jpg

We make some "cosmetics" with the HBS Mode.

tut6f.jpg

At the end we only plant some trees, bushes, etc.

Ready!!!!!!!

..last time our journey ended at the Gammle River - pedestrian bridge. The bridge was donated by the "Office du Tourisme - Rondnoir" and connects the trails around Gassian.

gassian125sif.jpg

The modern look of the bridge is still controversial.

gassian126sif.jpg

As mentioned Gassian is located in the natural floodplain of the Gammle River. The exposed position made life long arduous.

gassian127sif.jpg

First primitive drainage canals and retaining walls were built in the first years of Gassian. The canals have been constantly improved and expanded over the centuries.

gassian129sif.jpg

gassian128sif.jpg

Constructed by Jacques Brunel's Plans(1886)..

The drainage canals flows in the Gammle-River.

On the peak stands the Pyla-tower...

gassianstadt7sif.jpg

...an old weather station, which was in operation until 1993..

gassian133sif.jpg

The tower was built in the 60s and is named after the famous meteorologists Henry Pyla ..today you will find here a popular tourist spot...

gassian134sif.jpg

...you can visit the tower and enjoy the magnificent view of the Eyre Valley and Gassian.

gassian135sif.jpg

Accessible only through a narrow serpentine through the vineyards..

gassian136sif.jpg

The tower of Gassian was built in ~ 1705.(Today there is a small wine festival).

gassian137sif.jpg

The watchtower for the valley village Gassian and Mariae.

gassian138sif.jpg

Located near the mouth of the Gammle River, the tower offers a spectacular view of the Gammle and the Eyre Valley.

Gassian is located in the natural floodplain of the Gammle River. The first settlement should be built around 1236. Especially craftsman and vintners settled here. The constant flooding of the Gammle River made the life hard. Beginning with the first primitive drainage canals the inhabitants managed the water regulation of the valley.

gassian13sif.jpg

The landmark of Gassian began in 1289 in the Romanesque style and in 1394 completed gothic, but later extended. The reason for the change of style was the great fire of 1351, parts of the cathedral was destroyed. Two 50-meter-high towers were added in the 15th and 16 Century. The cathedral is a major overhaul since 2001.

The "Liebfrauenmunster" of Gassian.

Located directly in the pedestrian zone at the "Place de la Liberté".

gassian14sif.jpg

gassian15sif.jpg

The "Place de la Liberté" is the public centerpiece of the city. In addition to the World War monument adorns the Rennoir Obelisk (1865) the square. In the foreground you can see the local police department. Behind left is the town hall of Gassian(Hôtel de Ville), including representation of the Tourism Association of Rondnoir ...

gassian17sif.jpg

..around the square you can find numerous shops, restaurants and bars..
