REPLIES- er, I mean, REPLY!
Schulmanator: Yup! She sure is!
PREVIOUSLY on The Best Defense: Media Week continues! The Defenders are out doing photo ops and interviews all week long, and have just gotten back from the grand re-opening of the PM Botanical Gardens with Flying Juniper Tree. Oh, and Morning Angel still wants to break out of The Mines and kill everyone or something. She's being secretive...
Sensational Girl and Titus walked through the halls deep beneath the Fort Mison Correctional Camp on the way to Morning Angel's cell...
Sensational Girl: Are you sure this is a good idea? You said she couldn't be killed, that's why they're keeping her down here...
Titus: Yeah, that's true, she's gotten tougher and stronger since the third team of Defenders retired. But the energy spikes they're registering, they're not like anything we've seen before, especially from her. Her powers have changed as much as she has over the last several years. Her old records are almost useless now. That was a big problem when we fought her last year in Mt. Plains.
Sensational Girl: Great...
Cosmette: *over their earpieces* Don't worry, Sensational Girl, we're all here to back you up. Juliet and I are not far away, we'll be there in moments if anything happens.
Juliet: *over their earpieces* Like, seconds!
Titus: Alright. Let's see how she's doing.
Titus pressed the button to open the door to Morning Angel's containment unit. The door slid open with minimal sound, and they saw the blonde ex-hero sitting Indian-style watching the door. She looked remarkably well put-together, and her face and body revealed no clues to her true age (north of 50 years old). Her powers must have been helping her with that, as well.
Titus: Morning Angel, been a while.
Titus stopped a few inches from the glass to stare down at her from behind his mask. His sensors were telling him she was a normal woman with slightly enhanced strength, but little else. The glass was still uniformly secure, and her mat and personal facilities appeared untouched by mischief, electronic or otherwise.
Morning Angel: Titus.
She noticed Sensational Girl standing rather timidly behind him and smiled slightly.
Morning Angel: You, I know who you are.
Titus: No, you don't.
Morning Angel: Yes, she's that new Defender. Sensational Girl, right? I even have an idea of what her powers are and how they work. I think we might have some mutual friends... But, judging by her clueless expression, she has no idea what I'm talking about.
Sensational Girl: Titus, she's, uh...
Sensational Girl paused and glanced anxiously at Morning Angel. The villainess smiled back demurely and Sensational Girl spoke softly to keep her voice out of Morning Angel's ears.
Sensational Girl: She's weird, her powers... If I remember correctly, the UPNs are supposed to separate these guys like, completely from their powers, but she can almost access them. I can feel her reaching for them right now... That must be what those energy spikes are.
Titus: Alright. We'll let Captain Ito know.
Titus and Sensational Girl glanced at each other and then Titus turned to lead her out.
Morning Angel: Oh, Titus, you're leaving already? But we didn't even have time to catch up. It's not often I get unexpected guests like this.
Titus glanced over his shoulder as they left.
Titus: But more often the last couple weeks, right? Good bye, Morning Angel.
Morning Angel: I suppose this means I'll have to wait to get to know your little harlot there more intimately...
Sensational Girl stopped and spun around on her heels.
Sensational Girl: What? What did you say? What did you call me?
Morning Angel: Oh, struck a nerve, have I? You shouldn't be so sensitive, little girl.
Morning Angel continued smiling at the pair of Defenders.
Titus: Sensational Girl, let's go. We have what we came for. Let's talk to Captain Ito.
Sensational Girl: You heard what she called me! She knows something!
Titus: Let's go.
Titus spared a glance back at Morning Angel and felt a chill down his spine.
Sensational Girl wanted to protest with all her might, but she reigned in her feelings and let Titus take her out of the cell. She mustered what was left of her discipline, not looking back to see the terrible smile on Morning Angel's face. The door slid shut behind them but instead of hurrying up the hallway for the elevator to the surface, Titus stopped and looked at her.
Titus: Can you still feel her powers out here?
Sensational Girl: I could probably like, feel her powers from almost anywhere on the island I've gotten so good at this.
Sensational Girl sounded upset, she was rather ashamed of herself for letting Morning Angel get to her.
Titus: Good. Can you block her from here? Turn her powers off?
Sensational Girl: What? Do you want me to sick all over the floor?
Titus: Sick? I thought you were getting better about that?
Sensational Girl: Cosmette helped me a lot, she's taught me a few things about how like, cosmic powers work, but we're not talking about a muscle-bound doofus like Super Pecs. This is Morning Angel. Her powers rival Zama and Shar Pen. It'll make me sick, but I can make them disappear for like, some time.
Titus: How long?
Sensational Girl took a moment to think about it and shrugged.
Sensational Girl: Like, a few hours, at least. Maybe until tomorrow morning if you want me to like, spend all of tomorrow in the bathroom...
Titus: It really does make you sick, doesn't it?
Sensational Girl: Not as much as before, but like I said, it's Morning Angel, not Super Pecs...
Titus nodded and motioned her to follow him.
Titus: We're going to let the warden know. I'll have to call Dr. O'Sullivan and he'll come down here and play with the UPNs tonight. That's why I asked.
Sensational Girl: I'll stay with you. It's not safe to turn those off with all these powered villains here. I can keep her powerless and help out with the others if something goes wrong with your fixes.
Titus: Alright, thank you, Sensational Girl.
Sensational Girl: Teamwork, Titus. Teamwork.
She patted his shoulder sending the metallic taps echoing down the hallway and strode on ahead. Titus smiled in his helmet and ended up being the one being led out.
Cosmette: You can't seriously be leaving me here alone to be on call with Juliet the whole night, can you?
Titus: No, don't be silly, we can't leave you here alone. We're leaving you at HQ alone.
Cosmette: Oh, no! She's just going to pick on me all night!
Juliet: Hahaha, you would think that the most powerful Defender ever would be tougher than this! Relax, Cosmette, this will be a great bonding experience for us!
Cosmette: Great... I'm totally excited.
Cosmette glowered at Juliet who smiled brightly in return.
Captain Ito: Well, with that out of the way, when do you expect Dr. O'Sullivan to be here?
Titus: Should be within the next 90 minutes. I just talked to him on my armor's communicator, he's bringing a small team and some relevant tools. All team members' security clearance is fairly high.
Captain Ito: Yes, I'm not worried about HQ workers' security clearance, I don't doubt that, but... Our guest, she makes us all a bit nervous.
Titus: She makes everyone she meets nervous, Captain. We've got Sensational Girl, though, so we'll be fine.
Captain Ito looked at the young woman with them-
Captain Ito: Barely more than a schoolgirl!
-and sighed. The look of her did not especially inspire confidence in the prison warden.
Captain Ito: Well, Juliet and Cosmette are cleared for flying out of here and North Gate One knows of Dr. O'Sullivan and his team's approach. I'll stay onsite for the duration of the fixes. I'll position the Power Unit near you and the Mines, just in case.
Titus: Thank you, Captain Ito.
They exchanged their good byes and Cosmette and Juliet were airborne for HQ, and Sensational Girl steeled herself for the long night ahead of her...
