Please Note:  As explained here, due to limitations in the Gallery software, some Challenge submissions may include a larger version of the same image (e.g. for mosaics).
Before voting, please check in the description and comments section to see if the author has posted one of these. However, it should not be a disadvantage if an author just has the required Gallery image.

As my personal entry to the Facelifting Challenge on simtropolis-com, I’ve redesigned one of the Vanilla Maxis buildings, namely, a small mall suitable for a small town filling the gap between single stores and huge malls, by resorting to a series of props and textures previously created by developers during 13 years of intense work. The size of the parking lot has been reduced and trees and signs have been added, the plaza in front of the mall has been decorated and contains some accessoires like bike racks and shopping carts, and the entire lot contains more trees.

The Vanilla building’s name is Lee Shopping Mall, it is growing on a 6x5 commercial lot (medium density). All building properties, lot size, and growth stage have been kept the same. This building has its own TGI instance; therefore, it does not override any Maxis building.

Content creation:

This is a 100% relot. The content you see has been created by:

  • Maxis
  • SimGoober: Shopping carts, tall shrubs, flowers
  • girafe: Trees
  • Murimk: Bike racks, litterbins
  • ripptide: Trucks
  • jen_p: Fountain
  • d_j_p1: News stand
  • Aquazona883: Grass overlay textures
  • BSC: Parking lot textures
  • Pegasus: Sandstone textures

      Harrods, by Mattb325.
      ---------------------------------------
Inspired by the iconic department store on Brompton Rd, Knightsbridge, Harrods is presented as a CS§§§ growable and ploppable lot for your cities.
Please be aware that the present day Harrods has been extended and remodelled a number of times since the main building on Brompton Rd was completed in 1905, so this is NOT a strict recreation, but what I present is faithful to the original façade as designed by Charles Stephens, albeit with modifications to make it more game-ready.
I have only modelled the front portion of the building.
It must be noted that the present building has completely over-run the old streets of 'Queens Gardens' and 'New Place' and wrapped its way around what used to be known as Queen Street and Lower North St (since renamed Hans Rd and Basil St respectively), consuming the old Hans Mansion block and other buildings in the process.
Because these streets run at odd angles and curves, even with the FAR roads and other NAM advances, I felt that modelling all of this would make the building almost completely unusable for the average player.
Additionally the original building, aligned to Brompton Rd, was slightly wedged shaped - the old line is still somewhat visible under all of the present day roof additions from Google earth along the Hans Rd façade. Naturally I have squared this off to get this into game, which means that the rear of the building is completely fictitious.
The present roof junk and extension of the Mansard roof along all facades is modelled - with slight variations by me - on the most up-to-date renovations: you can compare the differences by using the Google earth program (up-to-date) vs. Bing ?birds-eye/Google maps (out-of-date) to see the remarkable difference to the roof-top in recent years.
Lastly, in order to fit the building on a maximum of 8 tiles (which will give it at least some chance of growing), I have removed one set of windows near the turret. Given the lag on my computer, I have also avoided modelling the hundreds of bulbs on the Hans Cres and Hans Roads sides.
With all of that said, if you are strictly puritanical about recreations being 100% accurate, then please do not download this.
The lot comes in two flavours: a growable Commercial Services and a ploppable, functional C§§§ lot, which is found in the Landmarks Menu. Both have the same stats.
      ---------------------------------------
      STATS CS§§§ & Ploppable CS§§§:
      Lot size :                    8 x 4
Growth Stage:          8 (Medium and High Density Zoning)/Ploppable

      Capacity Satisfied:  CS§ 11,140, CS§§ 2,787, CS§§§ 1,117
      Pollution:                   50 (Air)/ 33 (Water)/ 67 (Garbage )
      Pollution Radius:      6/7/0
      Power Consumed:    209 Mwh
      Water Consumed:    1,871 Gal/Month
Building Style:           Chicago/NY/Houston/Euro (N/A for Ploppable)
      Occupant Group:      Commercial Services Building

NOTE ABOUT DARK NITE vs MAXIS NITE:
This download contains TWO model files; one for dark nite users (and other night-time darkening mods, such as Gizmos night-mod) and one for the standard Maxis nite.
You must keep only one file - depending on which version you use. If you are unsure whether you have a night-darkening mod installed, then choose the Maxis night version. Regardless of which file you choose to keep, make sure you DO NOT delete the Lot File!
If you use the dark nite version, you will need a dark nite mod.

      DEPENDENCIES:
      ---------------------------------------
This lot does not require external dependencies.
      ---------------------------------------
To install, simply unzip the contents of this file into your plugins folder.

Many trace discount retailing's birth to 1962, the first year of operation for Kmart, Target and Wal-Mart. Sam Walton and his wife, Helen, put up 95 percent of the money for the first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, Arkansas - borrowing heavily on Sam's vision that the American consumer was hinting to a different type of general store. As of today, Sam's gamble is a global company with more than 1.3 million associates worldwide and nearly 5,000 stores and wholesale clubs across 10 countries. Wal-Mart generates more than $256 billion in global revenue, establishing a new record and adding more than $26 billion in sales.  The company earned almost $9.1 billion in new income and grew earnings per share by more than 15 percent.
This BAT was originally created by Bobbo662 (aka B62). Unfortunately, due to real life circumstances, he was unable to finish the lot. He graciously handed his work over to me to finish and subsequently upload for yall.

Verbatim from Bobbo's original 2006 readme:
      Caldor
      Headquarters - Norwalk, Connecticut
      President - Warren D. Feldberg
      Employees - 22,000
      Stores - 145
      Founded - 1954
      Closed - 1999
February of 1999, New England lost another major regional retail chain of store. Caldor, the company founded by Carl and Dorothy Bennett in 1951, turned to dust. This was the end of the sales pitch for the 4th largest retail chain in America. 22,000 workers took home pink slips for their trouble.  145 stores in nine states were put up for lease.
Caldor got it's name from combining the first names of the Bennetts, Carl & Dorothy and opened one small store in Port Chester, New York.  The Bennetts sold Caldor to Associated Dry Goods Corp., and in 1986, ADG merged with the May Department Stores Co.  In 1991, Caldor went public and grew into a company with 2.5 billion in annual sales. Though in
recent years, Caldor failed to distinguish itself from other regional discounters, like Ames Department Stores and could not compete with retail giants like Wal-Mart, Kmart and Target.
      _______________________________________
This is part of my series of bankrupted department chains that I have created for your Sims to relive which what we had experienced in North America.  Ames, Zayre, Woolco, Bradlees, and now Caldor all have been swallowed up by the effects of Sam Walton's, Wal-Mart.

Verbatim from Bobbo's original 2006 readme:
      Welcome to Bradlees!
      Headquarters: Braintree, MA
      President:    Peter Thorner
      Employees:    16,000 (Jan 1994)
      Founded:      1958
      Closed:       2000

A little bit like Ames Department Store but with bigger stores located in bigger towns, and a very unique layout. They offered general merchandise with many discounts all year around.  They had 130 stores before they filed for Chapter 11, and then came back with 102 stores in 1997 up to 105 stores in 2000. CEO Peter Thorner cleaned up the financial problems of the company and wanted to see Bradlees operating 150 stores.  They did opened new stores including one in a former Caldor in Staten Island.  Emerging from Chapter 11 in February of 1999, nobody cold have predicted the kind of end they announced on December 26th 2000. (Isn't that something, spend all your hard earn cash on christmas and then
come back from the holidays and WHAMMO! - no job!)
Bradless store layout was different from Wal-Mart and K-Mart. Wide open, entering the store you could see from one end of the store to the other, not that the store was small, but the ceiling was high, asiles not tall, it was simple, and easy to shop.
First Bradlees opened their doors in 1958 in New London, CT.  The name "Bradlees" was taken from Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, cT where the Company's earliest planning meetngs were held.  The Stop & Shop Co. acquired the chain in 1961.  The Company operated 105 stores in seven (7) Northereastern states: Main, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

This BAT was originally created by Bobbo662 (aka B62). Unfortunately, due to real life circumstances, he was unable to finish the lot. He graciously handed his work over to me to finish and subsequently upload for yall.
