Yeah, it would be remiss to forget about RVT's stuff, even if I can't use it in HD terrain due to tiling. I used it for so long, too... :'-/

Got them added along with the LK StarterSet I'd forgotten. :)

This is a nice contribution, very nice.  Thank you!  It had to be a lot of work to put all those various views together, but you've done quite well. . . Well done indeed!   I've tried many of these myself through the years, working to find "the one" - hahahaha.

The only addition I'd humble suggest would perhaps be showing the mods at another closer zoom.  It would double the work, but from hard experience I know that the various zoom levels do effect some of these water mods rather dramatically.

My only real "contribution" to the information in this thread would be to add that I never found the "the one" - the perfect water for the look I wanted - at least not "straight from the box".  Many were close but not quite perfect.   Then I found that I could adjust some settings in the terrain mod I use to create exactly what I wanted.  Changing the "Water Min Alpha" setting and the "Water Depth for Max Alpha" can make a great water mod even better . . .

It did not even occur to me to check various zoom levels until I got to the ELSHA mod. I noticed the files zoomdistant.jpg and zoomier.jpg and took a look at them. I added text under my pic about there being a difference.

It goes from:

13_zps5fhrst0c.jpg

To:

13b_zps0bk48vzv.jpg

And while I do like the extra ripples and each color separately, I personally don't care for the inconsistent, dramatic color change within the mod.

As you aptly noted it would double my workload. Instead of the current 72 pics it would become 144. While I don't mind this boring, tedious task for a once thru, I just can't motivate myself to go that extra step. If you'd like to take on that task and make a thread with them zoomiered, I'd be happy to include a linky to yours in my first post. I feel what I've presented here is sufficiently better than what we didn't have before. :P

As for missing mods: timotheus4 has made a bunch of separate water mods. [Linkie]

OMG! There's a treasure trove of water mods there. Like 37 downloads later and I've got them all. That @timotheus4 was one prolific water modder. :golly:

As I have time I'll get them screenshot and edited into post 1. In other news, I have all the pics for my upcoming Beach Shoppe. I'll put it on hold while I catch up here.

Sounds great! Jeez, we can hardly thank you enough - have another Like from me as a token of my gratitude at least. And a duckie! :ducky:

I remember I once spent many, many days trying to choose a water mod that would look good...

  • in the individual map (no too obvious tiling, no garish or unsuitable colour)
  • in region view
  • in combination with the canal set and ploppable water I was using at that time

The last point was the hardest task, as plop water / in-game water transitions are terribly hard to get right in game. Depending on which ploppable water / canal / river set you use (Oppie's canals, SimGoober's canal set, callagrafx' retake on SG's set, PEG or Diggis' streams, ...), it's still a lot of work, but an overview like the one you kindly provided makes it so much easier to sort out the ones that won't work for sure and focus on the promising candidates instead.

Whew! I got them all opened and pics shot. Turns out to be 59 more images. Some of those contain multiples like Japan has 5 and Barbados has 8 and so on. Tis my bedtime now, but I'll upload and update post 1 as I get time.

@Cyclone Boom

HELP! I've added 27 more pics but the 99th one just doesn't want to resolve itself into an image. (I pasted it. Waited and waited. Deleted it. Pasted it. Waited a while. And I tried this like 5 times. When I've had this before it usually works on the 2nd or 3rd try.) Have I hit some sort of per post limit? I still have 32 more to add. I'll hold off on them cause if they won't show up there's no point in posting them.

No worries, I've fixed it now.

Looks like it didn't convert for some reason, with it just being a link to the image:

Before (as a link)

<a href="http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p184/CorinaPics/39h_zpsvlkzeklr.jpg" rel="external nofollow">http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p184/CorinaPics/39h_zpsvlkzeklr.jpg</a>

After (as an image)

<img alt="39h_zpsvlkzeklr.jpg" class="ipsImage" src="http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p184/CorinaPics/39h_zpsvlkzeklr.jpg">

I guess when re-pasting the URL in the editor, it still didn't resolve into an image because the editor still saw it as a formatted link. If this happens again, try removing it, then copy & paste the URL as a plain link again (from Photobucket). Or alternatively, add it using the "Insert other media" option in the bottom right of the editor.

With a post length limit, I know some forums restrict this. But I don't believe one exists here, and I've yet to personally notice it even when testing with very lengthy formatting (e.g. challenge leaderboards). Even if there is, you'd think it'd be based on the size/length of the HTML, not the visible height of the post.

As a quick test, I tried duplicating your post and it still accepted the save. So there should be room for at least another 99 pics... ;)

Ok, it's up to 131 pics in post 1 now. That's vanilla water and 129 other choices. (Yes, the math is right. There's also that underwater view.)

But, if there are more water mods out there, let me know. ;)

It seems clear the color and texture of water has never been a highly agreed upon thing in the mod community....131 different choices.

Or to put it another way, people like choice :). Perhaps the fact that the water textures are a relatively easy mod to create helps here. Compared to terrain mods for example, which are vastly more complex to make something that looks good. I'm sure otherwise there would be many more options for the other terrain-altering mods too.

Still 131! Who knew, that only makes Corina's work here even more impressive.

Shame we can't display two sets of images side by side, both with independent scroll bars. So you could compare two images next to each other. That's some pretty basic/archaic HTML code right there to achieve that (frames). But if you fancy an off-line version (for download) in HTML format, I'm thinking that could be very doable.

Btw, the 131 I mentioned is the number of pics in my first post. One, however, is vanilla and that's not really a choice. And another one is the underwater view without any water to show the terrain down there. ;)

Well, what's wrong with opening this thread in two separate windows and have them side by side? Peeps with 16:9 ratio monitors could prolly do it well or, like me, with dual square-ish monitors just have each window on it's own screen.

And this I personally encourage. Any (and every) one ought to do a Save As ... Complete Web Page in case my free Photobucket account ever borks the pics.

WOW Cori, the effort you put in here is just amazing. This is a really nice resource.

I am using the Tropic Water , I thought I had the Coastal mod but it doesn't seem to be showing up , need to look into when I get around to it.

Since @CorinaMarie got lazy politely requested that I write this, I present to you,
Cori Jolteon's Tree Shoppe  by Jolteon@Simtropolis
A picture catalogue of (almost) every known Tree Controller Mod for SimCity 4
Note: I did not create any of these mods. This thread is simply to display each tree controller mod using the same city tile for easy comparison. If you find this useful bookmark or follow this thread. All images are hosted right here on Simtropolis, except for the two gifs, which are hosted on Gfycat, so they will likely be around for as long as the site stays up. All of the content in this post is freely available under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license, meaning you can share any part of this post as long as you attribute it to me.
For people with 16:9 (or other wide screen) monitors, or a dual monitor setup, you can open this thread in two separate windows side by side. This allows you to have independent scroll bars to compare specific mods, but if you spread it across multiple monitors there may be some slight color difference between the two.
For those that don't know what a tree controller is: A tree controller mod is a mod that replaces the trees that appear when you use the god mode tree brush.
Other Threads in Cori's Shoppe Series:

All of the pictures below were taken of the same hill with Maxis textures and shadows disabled. Due to the limited terrain variation not all trees are shown, and results may vary depending on your terrain and textures.
If there are any tree controllers I forgot to do, let me know and I'll add them as soon as possible.
The spoilers contain important information, so check them.

CPT Missouri Breaks Tree Controller by c.p.:

Yes, it's supposed to look this barren. With this tree controller, trees only show up in areas with high moisture. To find areas with high moisture, use this mod.
CPT Meadowshire River Tree Mod by c.p.:

Like the Missouri Breaks tree controller above, it's supposed to be this barren.

      HBS Californian Mediterranean Tree Controller:

      HBS Chihuahuan Desert Flora Mod

FedEx Tree Controller by missing dependencies:

This is what you get when you don't read the ReadMe-s and descriptions, and don't install the dependencies. So again, read everything in the description and ReadMe file for the mod you choose. Unless, of course, you like the brown boxes enough to fill your city tiles with them.

The first three Terrain Mods are hosted on both the LEX and the STEX and have slightly different names, but are the same mods. So, you only need the left hand side or the right hand side as separated by the slash. Ofc, the ones on LEX require a separate login. If you haven't signed up there I highly advise it. They've got great content too. (And a side note, the registration for the LEX is separate from the SC4Devotion forums.)
The linkys that are indented in a bullet list (like this) are the dependencies. You'll notice a lot of duplication of the those deps. If you get the CPT No3 & No4 once, you do not need to re-get them for other terrain mods that require them. For peeps with 16:9 (or other wide screen) monitors you could open this thread in two separate windows side by side.  This would allow you to have independent scroll bars to compare specific mods. It would also work if you have dual monitors tho there may be some slight color difference between the two.

Note: I have the Beach Extend Mod 1.0 installed for more beachiness. Otherwise, it's all vanilla. So, what you see is what the complete mod does. Some have Cliff (rock), Beach, and Water. Or some combination. Or only the terrain itself. If you download a mod and have any difficulty with it and when all else fails, read the ReadMe instructions that comes with it.
Note 2: The following images were shot on my low end system at 1280 x 1024 resolution. See @rsc204's post later in this thread for comments on how you can improve the look on your system and for a linky there to a tutorial on how to do that.

A picture catalogue of every known Beach Mod for SimCity 4
Note: I did not create any of these mods. This thread is simply to display each beach mod using the same city tile for easy comparison. If you find this useful feel free to use your browser's Save As function and do a Save Complete Web Page. This will give you an offline copy with all the pictures. If Photobucket ever decides to bork my free account this will allow the thread to be rebuilt whether I'm available or not. My content is freely available for use by anyone. You can even make a duplicate thread on any other site if you like. Please, just be sure to give me credit for the original creation.
For peeps with 16:9 (or other wide screen) monitors you could open this thread in two separate windows side by side.  This would allow you to have independent scroll bars to compare specific mods. It would also work if you have dual monitors tho there may be some slight color difference between the two.

The Foreshores .dats are the textures for the beach terrain. There are also 6 Beach .dat files which are for ploppable beaches. Special thanks to @rivit for clarifying these for me cause I was confuzzled about them.
Here's just a quick sample. First vanilla for both beach terrain and a beach lot:

I'm trying to find and remove the dat for this water mod, since it is interfering with my other terrain mods sometimes. Does any one recognize this mod? It looks kinda glitchy when max zoomed out, but when max zoomed in, theres extremely faint grid lines among a featureless  dark blue surfce, like in my uploaded screenies. Can anyone recognize this water mod?
Edit: After resorting to the trial by error method of removing one folder at a time, i found the culprit to be JRP_WaterMod_Beta.dat in the JPR Addon Lot Pack 02>xx_Options directory.
