Please help us for June & July   06/20/2017

This month we're hoping for a little bit of a boost this month or next, in addition to covering the regular bills, we could benefit from some hardware upgrades. STEX Collector's Set gifts can now be sent to you via digital download as well as regular mail if you wish! Every donation dollar goes toward keeping Simtropolis online and humming along. Your contribution counts! Hardware Upgrades As our website community software improves with more and more features, and as we bolt on additional features such as chat, the increased load to handle all these new toys is taking the server a bit to task. You may have noticed that we'd been forced to temporarily disable the chat as we worked out allocating resources for more optimal performance. Following this, we've applied a number of 'soft' changes such as caching options and experimented with server configurations (nginx as proxy, for example), so the hardware aspect is also an area we'd like to focus on. The last time we upgraded hardware was back in 2012, prior to the release of SC13. Your contribution means a lot! Your donation will go toward helping us to 1.) migrate to a newer server or 2.) at least get some ram/cpu/storage updates and any other infrastructure hardware or services. Donate and Get a Gift or Donate Any Amount Thanks so much! - Dirktator & The Admins

Thank you very much! *:D Being part of this community and seeing my stuff used is the best reward, but a little money helps me justify spending alot of time on creating assets. *;)

Good point with those trucks and there's prob even more of a demand after Shroomblaze's trucks seemed somehow connected to flickering vehicles. :)

I'll second American trucks if it means that I don't have to do them! I was planning on creating some for at least my containers before you began this project, so let me know if you need or want any help!

+1 for American style big rigs, I'd love to see you two come up with some amazing things together, and the best part of all, twice as fast! *:thumb:

It's always a pleasure seeing your work

@bsquiklehausen I had a feeling American trucks would make more sense for yours. I think I'm good with the model - got a nice bunch of pics to work from. I gotta say though they're huge! Is it typical for them to have those larger sleeping quarters behind the cabin? I kinda feel for the European drivers - there's a big difference in space that's for sure! :P (ofc the best comparison pic I could find quick was from the truck simulator games xD )

For the European trucks I'll prob do some tweeks to the Scania truck by Onion_Jack. Lower the tris a bit (can get it to 1k just fine) and add some detail to the texture (the trucks around here usually have a bit of design on them - mostly lines and some text - but I rarely see any unmarked ones)

Wow, they are just great.

Any chance you will also make some intermodal trailers? Could be DFDS, DSV, Wetron, BAS and so on. Would realy like them, just as tanktainers. Well I should learn how to do it myself lol.

Keep up the good work!

Thank you! ^^ I'm not sure what you mean, could you perhaps grab some pictures of examples? I won't be doing any real world brands though - I prefer it when the game has it's own and at least for now I don't plan on adding more container brands. *:)

I got some work done on an American truck. Far from done, but at least the overall shape feels right. :P Gotta add a few more parts and then get rid of extra tris. Atm it's 1.4k but I'm hoping I can get it closer to 1k.

Intermodal trailers are trailers which can be transported on a train as well. Nowadays you will see trains with containers and trailers coming by very often.

DFDS

Wetron

The yellow plates on the trailer are for the reachstackers or cranes to load and unload. Actually it are just trailers, but they have the plated and an other framework. I wish I could do them myself but I have no idea how.

I do plan on trains with these containers on, so that's just a matter of time. :) Once I'm done with the trucks, trains and container stacks I'll move on to another project though.

If you're interested in trying your hand at making stuff, then there's always this heavy truck template you could start with. You could totally make the DFDS trailer from this without needing to model - it will just be texture work. :)

Looking good so far, are there any plans on making small container trucks? Similar to http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=782886986 or https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=643229471 or maybe even other interesting varieties like http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=754279349.

I prefer using big trucks as props and smaller trucks for the actual logistics .. Wish there was a mod to set which truck model is used by each industry and commercial and then assign bigger trucks just for export or something.

@accapulco Totally! I'm not sure if it'll be right after the other container projects or if I'll have a little break from containers and work on some other assets. It depends on how bored I am from importing container assets. :P But they're definately on my to-do list. :)

Could I make a request? I love that brick fence you made for your old factories. I find myself using it for more than just that. It's a really nice decorative brick/iron fence for putting out front of a house, or around an outdoor dining area.

Could you make longer sections? Like 4x and 8x?

I might be boring here, but I prefer real brands in-game. I strive for realism in my cities, there are more buildings plopped by me, than grown randomly in my cities. So real brands of various things is what I want in my cities.

In case you missed them I released my containers on @Tim The Terrible's container car model here. Since then I've gotten them ready for trains and found an engine to use (recolor, not a new model by me), but I've run into a problem. :( Seems the Asset Vehicle Editor mod is not working - at least I can't get it to save, which means only one trailer variation. Do any of you guys have an idea for what to do? With all the trailers releasing a train with varying trailers is kind of a must, so I'm hoping there's another way or another mod to let me do this.

I haven't used it in a while, but I remember it can behave weird. One thing I remembered is that you get one chance to save the train. If you change anything after saving, it will result in a train with only Trailer0's (first trailer). So my tip: set everything in the default UI (Color Variations, Number of Trailers etc.) then do all the AVE settings, and finish by saving with the AVE Save button. Made a mistake? Start all over again (from choosing template onward)

Ty, I'll try that and see if it wants to play along a little at least.

Edit: No luck sadly. Doesn't matter if it's from a fresh load of the game or not. It simply doesn't save at all. So sad. :( (Also I realized I messed up my oil trains since I had forgotten all about needing the mod to save)

in the comments on Asset Vehicle Editor someone has commented a link to an updated version of the mod (not the original author - which is why it wasn't updated properly) I downloaded it and it seems to work :)

Wow, I must have been a little tired yesterday! xD There was both a fixed version and a link to the mod bsquiklehausen mentioned. Trains incoming later today/tonight. :D

Trains released and I'm really looking forward to doing some non-container things again. :D Love all the containers, but it does get a little boring looking at the same stuff this long. ;)

have you had any trouble uploading today? I've been trying in the last half hour and I can't :( just keeps telling me there's no connection (but my internet is fine)

Hello, I started doing 3D modelling about a month ago, unfortunately after having done 3 different buildings in blender I just haven't yet understood the texturing system. I have tried to do seams and such, but I just can't manage to fit all the details correctly, so here are my 3 main problems on my latest building, which I aim to hopefully finish:
Too many faces so I cannot do the texturing easily (1,014 faces and 3,300 tris after trying to merge what I could.) How do I proceed with doing balconies? I heard something with using textures, but as said before, I am confused with them.  How should I proceed with texturing generaly.  Here are two pictures of my project:

Again thanks in advance for any possible help.

I've been lurking about the forums for a good long while since my last journal (which, unfortunately, is not to be resurrected) - and trying out a few different approaches to the game before settling on a style/gameplay that hopefully will be sustainable in between real life. I think Delvedene failed because it was far too ambitious - finding all the perfect mods and assets, along with the micro-management of things like farms and stuff got in the way of enjoying the game.
So, I'm playing one of the vanilla maps, unlocking everything (including all 25 areas - I was hoping to use Area Enabler, but that's broken since the last DLC, so I had to spend most of my money buying all the areas - on the other hand, having a reasonably limited amount of money helps me to prevent just wallpapering the map with cityscape ), and removing all the highways and railway.
What I like about the vanilla maps is that they offer wide grassland areas surrounded by woods, which offer a natural limit to town growth. Contours are also a good guide (anyone know how to get the game to keep contours on display when laying down road?) What I don't like about the vanilla maps is the prebuilt highway network. I also don't like the rate at which you unlock new areas with population growth: you end up being forced into super dense small towns.
      ----
      Chelsea
The town of Chelsea currently stretches along one main road (which will go on to connect to another town by the river later - below the image), with three other roads: the first, leading into Stepano (right of the image) - the industrial estate where most of the Chelsea residents work; another leading to the Cockerell farms (top left); and the third heading off to where yet another town is planned (to the left).
In the background you can see Mt Chelsea.

Chelsea again, from a different angle (Stepano to the bottom). You can see a thin belt of trees separating Chelsea from another grassland area where the next town is planned (mid-left). In the background is Mt Runcorn, where an old fortification sits (put there by the map designers, but just outside the 25 tile limit).

And a closeup of the Chelsea Cemetary, surrounded by some parklands (open space is going to be a big deal in these towns - I am desperately trying to avoid wall-to-wall buildings).

Anyone knows any way to terraform the land of an asset in the asset editor. I want to make an asset slightly raised on a hill.  Is there any way to do that?

So i was just playing cities skylines and a bought a dlc, and downloaded a number of mods, i was trying to fix the the speed of my game since i had a mod before that made time more realistic before i bought my dlc that changed it to -x4. I deleted the mod i had and when i loaded it back up i got an error that i couldn't take off the screen, ive removed all my mods, uninstalled, reinstalled and gotten the sos mod and nothing works, i can record what i can see if that help but i wondered if i could get any help since im not letting a city of 132,000 go so quickly.

      Thanks in advance

So I was recently looking at some Japan driving videos and got inspired to make some highway pillars.
I'm planning to make an entire set of various types of pillars in this style, even a 6cell over-canal pillar. (if it goes okay)
Tell me what you think about my first attempt, I need to nail the style and the details before I start making other variations.
Constructive criticism welcome, also any ideas.
By the way, do pillars have LODs like regular buildings? I should just make it just the pillar, without the small details - pipe, wires, supports.
Not sure when they're going to be done and available.
