Tourism and Casinos!

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I haven't made a tourism/casino city for a while probably since patch 4.0 and i was wondering if anyone has had any recent succes with them?

I had a landmark in my electronics city for extra cash and after a while I tourists stopped visiting it but my hotels were full with no tourists in my city! (7.0 patch) the data layer showed no tourists in the city but the population data showed around 800 tourists! This is jus my experience tho! I'm planning on making a casino city next and am jus looking for some extra help!

Thanks all!

in my experience Ive always needed to dedicate a whole city to make a casino city. need lots of space for the stadium, airport, hotels, all the casinos and shitloads of public transport.

in a non casino city tourism seems more a hindrance than a benefit. mostly because of traffic (experienced in 7)

i tried a full casino city again recently in 6 (cause i setup a new region) but some problems still mean its not very fun or profitable to do.

currently my tech city injects 10million to my casino city every now and then to keep it running.

+ number of workers seems to have gotten better. i hardly had any problems finding enough workers this time. not sure if this was better planning or not

+ tourism visitor number seems less fickle and buggy. i noticed that if i did a big change (eg demolish and rebuild a casino), or something went wrong (eg the stadium turned off cause of power), it would still take several days of low tourism numbers to recover. but i didnt see the old problem where the tourists never come back and you would go bankrupt and have to start again.

- the game still grinds to a halt once you get past 100k tourists. this means to me that a hugely successful (10mil/year +) low/medium wealth casino city isnt going to be possible in the long run.

- as of patch 6, the high wealth casino extensions are STILL broken. so a crazy high wealth casino city doesnt seem possible either :( i havent checked if it was fixed in 7

i dont have the amusement park dlc. i hear it makes at least $100-200k. but i sure as hell dont have the space.

but in summary, a casino city is still not 'fun' for me, and is mostly a large source of frustration.

Thank you for sharing your experiences! I found traffic to b the biggest killer for me! Mainly taxis taking tourists to hotels that had grown in my residential areas as opposed to the ones I had laid out near the casinos! I'm never too sure if I should use the casino hotel add ons!

I have never run a successful airport as I have never had the need to cater for high wealth tourists!

As for the amusement park, I found it made a tidy profit although u need a large amount of space!

I have a casino city running comfortably with OK traffic. I found a huge problem with this recent patch (Is it 8.0 we are on now?) Upon loading my casino city, all the tourists simply vanished and no trains/planes etc were bringing them in. Immediately I'm thinking its the garbage truck glitch again (8.0 erased all your garbage trucks, demolish and rebuild the garages to get them back) So I tear out my train station and rebuild...still no tourists...trains just bringing in commuters and shoppers.

I look around and notice 3 med-wealth hotels with about 500-600 tourists just squatting in each one, no one coming or going. Oh Mr Bulldozer? Get em! Problem solved. Tourists began once again flocking to my city via train, plane, auto, and bus. I have no idea why commercially zoned hotels would block incoming tourists, but hey...I fixed it after much aggravation and some trial and error.

I noticed this with my hotels! They were full but nobody coming or going! I deleted my tourist attraction and the hotels!

I just started a casino city yesterday and it's running very well. I have low/no traffic, no tourism buildings(eiffel tower, stadium, etc), and not a ridiculous amount of public transport either.

As you can see, it makes good money and it will soon be higher. Elegant casinos cost a fortune hourly and make, at least for me, crap all since the extensions do not work. I intend to replace them with the sleek casinos which, on average, are making 200k/hr each.

Edit:

Definitely need the elegant casinos. I have them with a bunch of the penthouses in them and it keeps the rich sims in the city, basically forever. Income goes upto 100k+ an hour currently and falls down to 30k/hr during off-peak.

Thank you for sharing!! Looks like uv done a good job! How have u managed to only have one hotel outside of the casinos? Any reason u haven't used tourist attractions?

Sorry to b pain jus this specialisation is the one I have experienced the least!

I have a city with 31,000+ tourists(29,000 of them are low wealth) and there isn't a single attraction lol.  It's just a typical RCI city with a University and processor facility. The train station and bus terminal bring them in by the bucket loads and they suck down the souvenirs.

I have no idea why they come.  I can either destroy the train station and rid of them all (but that effects neighboring commuters) or embrace the tourists and give them some venues.  I have a huge industry sector by the train station, I think I'll make room for a stadium!

I really don't like messing with the stadiums and theaters.  I don't like having to schedule events daily - who the heck thought up that mechanic?  It's fun for a few days, then you just have a giant building taking up space.

I agree with the stadiums, I like them in some aspects but it would b better if the events ran themselves or there were more options for events!

Iv had cities with dirty ore mines and smelters and tourists came! Strange sims!!

They are going to shops. If you look at the tourist Data View you can watch where they go. I've never seen figures that high though, usually 2 or 3 thousand. It definitely helps shops.

I have some hotels at a few of the casinos, just enough to keep some sims in the city instead of leaving(probably helps the traffic situation). Aside from that, it's probably the sheer number of tourists that come into the city. Btw, that city now has at least 2x tourists in the city than that screenshot shows. I didn't use attractions, mostly because it wasn't needed. Once you get to something where you're almost completely out of room and yet you clearly have thousands of tourists roaming around with nothing to do, that's when I put in a few attractions(leaning tower, statue of liberty, etc). That way they won't take away from the casinos which earn WAY more money.

Here's another city, in my attempt to get all high wealth.

pvwyH6P.jpg

Those 45k tourists, 43k of them are high wealth :P The only problem the city has right now, is crime. And that is because it's in the same region as 2 other casino cities. I currently get 1000 criminals a day. Traffic slows down the cops and then criminals end up burning down/forcing citizens to leave. I'm in the process of fixing that though.

This city, I started with 10million(just to make it easier on myself) from another city. I laid out a lot of residential and made 90% of it high wealth. Then I placed all the boats(planes are stupid expensive and give much less high wealth tourists). Then I placed the elegant casinos. One after another and another...and another.

19 high wealth casinos?! Wow. Don't know how you did it. Did you add them gradually? I notice you do not have low or mid wealth casinos. I've heard that once you have low wealth tourists in your city, it's hard to get rid of them. How did you entice them to come? I don't see a high wealth attraction (Stockholm opera house, etc.).

Nevermind. I see. Six boat docs. Smooth move. That will do it. They only bring in high wealth tourists. Nice. And I notice you don't have train stations, either. They bring in low and mid wealth tourists...

I put down 2 or 3 casinos and then added several at a time until I couldn't fit any more.

High-Wealth only comes via Boat/Plane/Car. So I didn't place any other transport methods and I didn't place planes because they don't bring in lots of tourists for their cost. Also, if you try and have all 3 classes, it will fail. Low/Med wealth sims VASTLY outnumber high wealth and if you try to get all 3 in your city, the lower two will just push out the high wealth. My other city(^ up there) only has 2k high wealth out of 250k tourists, and I've never seen them in my city.

Best bet, do either low-med or high, anything else will be no where near as good.

Also, I'm not entirely sure what draws in tourists. Like you noticed, there are no attractions. Perhaps the casino signs are enough to get the ball rolling and then they just continue to come by themselves? Remember, 600 high wealth per sign * 19 = 11k high wealth tourists. Probably don't need even half that amount :P
