Opinions on update 7

Recommended Posts

I have to say, the new road tools have really breathed some life into this game. I found myself addicted to it tonight building all sorts of bridges and tunnels, lots of fun! They are on the right track with this update. I haven't used the single tree tool yet but that is something I have wanted for a long while.

I feel like I can now recommend this game to friends for the $30 price tag. This game still has a ways to go to get to the $60 AAA title but I think if they make the maps larger and other things everyone's been wanting it will be a huge huge hit.

Yes I have found that Update 7 has made the game much better and more playable, though there are a few maps that don't lend themselves to tunnels well (high water table maps like Riverbend) unless I am missing something on what type of roads can be made into tunnels. Bridges are fun I have made a city with a single bridge leading to the industrial sector good to see how the traffic works there.

Cargo trucks seem to behaving themselves well and watched a few of them deliver their goods to the various stores which is good.. At the moment my city is in a happy medium where the sims are happy, the commercial stores are happy and industry are happy..

But in all Update 7 is making the game much better than it was..

I launched my biggest city, 620K population RCI city, no specialization, to check out the traffic tweaks.

Overall, I would say, at best, only a minor improvement in traffic.  But in such a dense city, it may have been an unfair test, it would likely have traffic jams no matter how smart the agents got.

Service vehicle clumping there is a very definately improvement.  Garbage trucks there was no clumping at all.  I saw a little clumping with busses, but that may be because they are actually being smart and sending 2 busses to a bus stop that has so many people waiting that it needs 2 busses.

I was very happy to see Houses of Worship was a freebie DLC, I havnt placed any of them yet (the 620K city is "finished").  I havnt played with the bridge or tunnel tool yet either, I will start a new city now to try those out.

well... the roads / tunnels / things are pretty cool... certainly allows you to do some different things..

nice to have the churches too, i've placed them but not really looked to much at what they're doing yet..

one thing that i noticed.. i was playing a city where my reclycing was completely fubared.. 12 garages / 24 trucks all running around in circule picking up nothing.. when i came to the city after update 7.0 i found i only had 2 trucks.. the others wouldn't come out of the garage or had completely dissapeared.. i had to demolish to whole plant, and rebuild and then it worked fine..

freight seems good too...

still have a city of 160,000 with only 12,000 workers which i just don't understand, but they're obviously still determined to make it a socialist's utopia or something... maybe that'll get "adjusted" in update 8.0

So far this update has been fantastic!!

I have played with the individual trees but it isn't really all that cool, its like plopping a bus stop but I forgot to look at how much it affects land value.

The road upgrades alone are reason to pick this game back up if you ever stopped. Now is when you go back to your old cities and replace bad intersections with bridges. Also, this makes mountainous maps that much more fun/easier to use roads in unique ways.

Religion plops are cool but as far as I can tell, didn't emanate any land value, just happiness.

Traffic flows much better but I did feel like I had a Garbage truck issue with some of my previous garages not opening. I closed the dump and reopened it and it seemed to fix it.

This is a GREAT improvement.

Had a play trying out the tunnels and they are awesome. So cool to be able to go under all your current zones, though the entry / exits take up about as much room as the bridge entry / exits so wanna be careful how you place them. :)

I've been using the tunnels like a mad-men, they aren't cheap but well worth it for those like myself who are building cross-city connectors; hopefully someday they'll make it so the tunnels could have tunnels en route to their destinations.

I've placed two religious buildings (modern temple and mosque) but haven't paid much attention to them thus far. It even seems like I have a few new buildings but then again they could be from 6.0 because I didn't play much of 6.0 at all.

Overall I'm very pleased with the update, I'm not pleased with cities at the moment but of course that's a personal problem. Hopefully EA/Maxis keeps up this work ethic, it must be pretty costly to continue making these crucial updates.

I noticed that in some of my cities recycle, garbage and trade trucks all disappeared from my maps. I had to go into building edit mode, delete the truck modules from her respective building and replop them. Kind of annoying but a small price to pay to end the annoying bus clumping.. that doesn't seem to be happening any more.

I also noticed that the issue with seeing terrain over roads when zoomed out still isn't completely fixed. This doesn't really bother me all that much, though...

Made a casino city this morning.  Wow.  Traffic is rather reasonable, actually.

Only issue I noticed was a garbage truck stopping at every house.... and a fire truck stuck behind it, stopping at every house with the garbage truck, lights and siren a-blaring.

Tunnels.

Tunnels and brige everywhere ! :D

I'm proud to say that my railtrack never crosses a single road ! (always under by a tunnel or the road passes above)

This update is truly great, but I noticed a 10-15fps drop. And since I was at only 25-30fps, this is quite annoying.

Traffic seems better but havent built any massive cities as yet!! Game did seem to feel better to play!! Got to work 12 hours shifts 2nite n 2moro so less play time :(

I had the same problems with garbage trucks and recycling trucks but I found that bulldozing the garages and re-adding them helped. Traffic is much improved but my issue with one of three cities in my region not seeing the Solar Farm continued so I decided to start a new region. Besides it will be fun to build from scratch knowing I can make bridges and tunnels.

Here's a screen of my new city. Starting slow because I don't like to borrow cash. The curved road at the far end ot the avenue outlines the coal deposits. My plan with this one it so make money exporting coal to support an education system so I can research the solar farm and build it before making other cities. Hopefully the screenshot shows. Never hotlinked a shot from G+ before.

Did the quantity of the Freight trucks got less in 7.0? I tried to look for them via the Data layers and I thought there seemed to be less of them than before.

Yes and no, they are just a bit smarter now as stated in the blurb the trucks leave only when the have cargo to deliver..

I have tunnels and bridges everywhere connecting my city from all sides one end to the other.  Traffic seems to have been diminished somewhat, as a lot of the cars are travelling underground or on the bridges more.  It's been a lot of fun making road networks.

(edited)

The new raise/lower tool seems to block the old way of terraforming with roads, so I have to re-learn a lot it seems. Two hours of fiddling with the tool gives me the impression that I can do a lot with it, which makes me excited to try out another tourism city. I've read that there are bugs in this patch, but hopefully by creating new cities, they won't effect me too much.

The update is great for the reasons already mentioned, however I have noticed low frame rates while using the road tool.

Oddly I'm also finding stretches of commercial zone where I actually zoned residential and industrial. When I dezone the mysterious commerical zones the correct zone reappears underneath it and sometimes all 3 zone types are layered over each other.

They finally seem to have beaten traffic back to a reasonable level.  The only problem is I only wanted the raise/lower tool to alleviate traffic.

What I do like about the raise / lower tool is the ability to isolate the zones, also where tunnels are good is that you can place one at the far end of thee city and connect it to your industrial zone if the said zone is isolated the sims will use that route and free up the roads around your commercial areas.  It does work to a point depending on which factory your sims work at, I have a city where I have a tunnel that goes to one side of the zone and another to the other side and they seem to like one over the other.. lol

A whole weekend to play and update 7 worked perfectly. No traffic incidents, trucks services and buses worked normally without follow each other.. In fact, without the problems in traffic, I ended up using only two overpasses to relieve the main avenue. eg a trade depot in the far corner of the city worked perfectly exporting processors (trucks only). Still missing the one-way roads, but at least now I can focus more on development and less on city traffic problems.

The city in question had nothing exotic in terms of layout of streets with a few 4-way intersections, university, one landmark and residents +100 k ... until now, no problems so far.

Update 7 posed more issues for me than it solved previous bugs

I'm curious to know about said issues, yould you name those please?

All I know is that Update 7 has for me made a big difference. With the industrial zone islolated from the rest of the city and having 3 tunnels running to it has made a lot of difference I have a city of 72k all nice and happy sims. Up until 65k I had 2 firetrucks protecting the city and I had very few abandoned buildings due to fire, had one clinic and one police station with 6 patrol cars.. Also 2 houses of worship maybe thats what kept the sims happy I don't know.. But before Update 7 I would get lots of unhappy sims, after update 7 I now have about 95% green happy buildings the other 5 percent are yellow/green I could never get that before although that could also be due to learning to not centralize the commercial zones and instead spread them out as I read somewhere the secret of that..

The only problem is I have is having too many medium wealth sims lol went a bit nuts with the road upgrading.. lol

I have had barely 2 hrs to try it, as I've been away all weekend, suffice to say the freight truck fix is the biggest improvement for me. My cities were completely unplayable because of the number of phantom freight trucks clogging my roads after Update 6.0

I too noticed all recycling and garbage trucks disappeared like others above me have experienced, but you just have to demolish the garages and throw down new ones to get them back...oh well.

I am looking forward to trying out the bridges and tunnels when I get home tonight.
