Does having souvenirs in shops take away from how much merchandise they carry?

 

I have no tourist attractions, no advanced transportation, nothing. But I still get 1200 tourist a day, which causes about 180 souvenirs in each shop. That's over 3000 souvenirs for 1200 tourists.

 

If I can reduce this, will I need less shops?

Can I reduce this?

Souvenirs and merch are tracked separately and having souvenirs won't affect how much merch you have. Also, it's the souvenirs that cause tourists to be spawned, not the other way around. The way it seems to work is, once you have a certain number of commercial buildings, they start to add souvenirs to their stock -- that alone shouldn't bring in more than the occasional tourist. However, once you add any form of mass transit (trains, ferries, regional bus, air) -- those $%&ers will start appearing in large numbers. I'm fairly sure this is not working as intended -- if you look at the design docs that the prima guide borrowed, tourists are supposed to be spawned by gambling + tourist attractions, and their number is supposed to be limited by hotel availability.

High wealth parks can draw tourists. Are those shops near the high-wealth parks?

I guess you can just keep bulldozing until you get the right kind of shop.

I don't believe parks, regardless of wealth-level, have anything to do with tourists. Parks are used by kids and shoppers. And, like I said above, it's not a questions of location, souvenirs will simply appear once a certain level of commercial saturation is reached.

I do have lots of parks, but I think what you're referring to is the amphitheater. It's the one high wealth park locked by the tourism city hall addon, and it draws tourists. I have no tourist attractions and no mass transnit (besides normal busses and streetcars). Get about 1200 tourists a day in a city of 250k. That's fine, as long as it's not taking merchandise away from my shoppers I'm good.

My commerce city draws 25k tourists a day.  It's insane, every 30 min (non sleeping hours) a train brings in 500 tourists.  Almost all my commercial buildings are now hotels and they hold like 720 agents each.  I have two casino and one expo center.  I only have like 5000 goods, so my Casinos are filled and my expo center is filled and then I have like 10k agents walking around the commerce center with nothing to spend their money.  Due to the population fudge statistic it shows like 400k visitors every day, lol.  I was getting about 1500 medium wealth tourists as well from expo center so I tried to build the Sci-Fi casino to provide them some lodging because they all left after the concerts, thinking that they would gamble but the sci-fi isn't profitable... not quite understanding that.  Streets are completely clogged with cars so no services work at all, ugh this game is so broken, I have to demo buildings everyday from crime or fires.

I wish I was as lucky as you. I have all casinos, maxed, 2 of both stadiums and expos, with signs.. plus a lot of commercial nearby, trains, streetcar, busses, and planes... 300 tourists a day. Casino profit is -230k a day... events are like -500k.

 

Needless to say that city is screwed.

My commerce city draws 25k tourists a day.  It's insane, every 30 min (non sleeping hours) a train brings in 500 tourists.  Almost all my commercial buildings are now hotels and they hold like 720 agents each.  I have two casino and one expo center.  I only have like 5000 goods, so my Casinos are filled and my expo center is filled and then I have like 10k agents walking around the commerce center with nothing to spend their money.  Due to the population fudge statistic it shows like 400k visitors every day, lol.  I was getting about 1500 medium wealth tourists as well from expo center so I tried to build the Sci-Fi casino to provide them some lodging because they all left after the concerts, thinking that they would gamble but the sci-fi isn't profitable... not quite understanding that.  Streets are completely clogged with cars so no services work at all, ugh this game is so broken, I have to demo buildings everyday from crime or fires.

 

Game isn't broken because you have high traffic.  You just need to design your city right to reduce the flow of cars.  Try putting a train station next door to your casino with a bus terminal next door too.  Make sure they are all within walking distance to the Expo Center.  The tourists will come in on the train, walk to the casino and the Expo Center, stay at the hotel in the casino, then leave on the train the next day after spending all their money.  No cars at all in that equation.

 

Make several of these hubs around your city to expand your profits or place multiple train stations side by side and along side casinos.  The more train stations you have the more scheduled trains come into your city and the more tourists you will attract with your casinos.

Like I said, I get 25k tourists a month, 500 come by train per hour in non-sleeping hours (like 10pm - 6am).  That is 16000 walking tourists, some of them walk right into the bus depot for a ride (1st stop, Casino, next stop Expo, next stop Casino, next stop Commerce district), the majority are walkers, the first place they can enter is my Casino, the next place they can enter is the Expo Center, and the next place they can enter is the Sci-Casino and then commerce district.  On my highway entrance is my 2nd casino so those that drive into town, first stop is Casino, next is Commerce district.   

 

The other 9000 tourists come by highway, and a majority of those come by Tourist Bus.  

 

Now the people that shack up in hotels, they hire taxis from the hotel, everything is within walking distance for them but they still hire taxis.  I also have workers that need to employ the commerce district and the rest of my casino and tourist empire.  A good majority of workers come by train in the morning hours.  When a bus takes up 1/3 of a high density street block, how are the other 6k agents worth of taxis and workers and shoppers supposed to fit on this road?  

 

The game is so broken, the size of these cars and bus are a joke, the roads cant fit anything because the scale is so disproportionately broken.  Even with those insane agent numbers from mass transit, you still can't avoid car commuters, no matter what and the game IS broken and can't handle it.  These maps can not handle 20k agents, and these roads can barely handle 1k agents.

Since I have a casino city with 260k population and 5 casinos with minimal traffic issues, I tend to think it's not the "game" that's broken.

Well, just because you have a casino city with 260K population and 5 casinos with minimal traffic issues, doesn’t mean the game isn’t currently broken.  :P

 

Granted, I wouldn’t use the word broken, but there’s a staggering number of bugs having to do with visitors, commuters, regional connections, mass transit and pathfinding in general, so you might appreciate that your experience may not necessarily jive with another players experience.

 

That said, the advice about having your tourist attractions around mass transit hubs that make it all but impossible for those yellow fuckers to not take the mass transit is solid. I’d love to see some screenshots since I’m about to start my second tourist city.

Did you use cheats to get the perfect city? or did you actually play through and develop your city over and over?

 

I'd also like to see photos....

 

Traffic is not my issue.... but big casinos dont work as far as I can tell.

The casinos work. Its the tourism thats broken. The number of tourists makes no sense. I have tiny cities with no mass transit and a single attraction with tons of tourists, and a big one with the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Sears Tower, 2 expos and 2 stadiums with just a few hundred.
