Selling raw ore/coal vs selling refined products

Recommended Posts

I've got a very small city that I'm trying to keep small, high tech, low pollution.  I built a coal mine and ore mine just for cash purposes -- I don't have plans to develop any dirty industry.

Am I losing a ton of money by selling the raw materials instead of refining them and then selling the refined products?  Does refining the products greatly increase the pollution impact?

Yes, you're losing a ton of money.  For example:

coal goes for ~4500 per 10 tons

ore ~6000 per 10 tons

But you turn them into alloy and suddenly they're worth over 48,000 per 10 tons.  That's 10x what you'd get for the coal by itself.

I only sell enough raw materials at the beginning to pay for a maxed out smelting factory. Even though they do put out quite a bit of pollution it's definitely worth it.

Raw material value will probably go up once the whole game is "unlocked" or whatever, for server load purposes. But right now yes, refining is the only way.
