The Battle for Middle Board

Here it is.  By popular demand...  (cos one guy thought it was a good idea and made a thread)...  and apparently there are one or two of us around here that enjoy a game of chess...

Helms-Deep-sketch.jpg

These are definately not rules, kind of a chess players code, which are really more like guidelines...  yeah whatever.

* More than one game can take place at a time, but to keep track of who is playing who there are different coloured boards so we can identify the games easily.

* All internationally accepted rules of play will apply... and I will post a link when I find a decent one...

*If you would like a game then take a free board and post your first move (naturally you will be white).

*If you would prefer to be black, either wait until someone starts a new game, and accept the challenge by making a reply move, or alternatively make a post saying you would like a game but would like to play as black.    Once someone accepts, then they can start the game can label it with the two players usernames.

*While it is definately worthwhile learning proper chess notation, we don't get too worried in here as long as we can clearly identify which piece is moving, from which square, to where.  A search of Algebraic Chess Notation on Google will find several good examples and tutorials.

ChessHouse - How to Read and Write Algebraic Chess Notation

Wikipedia - Algebraic Chess Notation

*If you do take on a game please do try an make a move preferably every day, or if you need to take a pause or timeout, then please let your opponent know.

*A typical game at around one set of moves a day should take approximately 4 weeks, depending on how active the players are.

*The boards are basic small file PNGs...    which are very simple to save to desktop, open in paint and rectangle select, copy, cut and paste the pieces around the board.   The squares or pieces will fill with one click of the paint fill or dropper.

*(Please don't use JPEG's as the colours will bleed at the edges, and the colour filler wont work.)

*Upload the edited PNG board from wherever you saved it to either your own photobucket or imageshack account or use the ST imageshack account.    (Click the frog button on the message post toolbar.)  If you use your own image hosting account it is easy to have it open on a separate browser tab.

*Chatter is permitted but please refrain from commenting directly on stategy or suggest moves for games in progress.

*We also don't get too worried if people make mistakes...  the whole point of this thread is to have some fun, and hopefully in the process we will all improve our game.  1.gif

*Please bear with us while we work out what works and what doesn't.    We reserve the right to edit these rul..  code... guidline whatever thingys at our slightest whim or fancy.

*Please PM me if you have any questions or are not sure about something... and I will do my best to make something up.  40.gif

Excuse me Astro...  I am just making some room for a results table so I have hijacked your post...

Casting his eye over the battlefield, General Astronelson notices that his opponent, NZ General Abcvs, has advanced his infantry. This has blocked any further advances of the Australian infantry, so General Astronelson sends in the cavalry to attack.

General Astronelson sat at his field office, looking over the maps of the battlefield. The battlefield was a perfect square, with the two opposing armies of Australia and New Zealand facing each other over the open territory. So far, the battle had proceeded without any loss of lives. The only thing that had taken place was development of position. The general pondered what the New Zealand army would do next. He did not have to wait long.

Captain S. Jacobs: Sir! General Abcvs has advanced his cavalry to sector f6!

General Astronelson: That's within striking range of our infantry in sector e4! Thank you, captain.

This was a development considered standard in battle theory. The question was, should he defend the infantry with more infantry, the other cavalry division, or the long-range "Bishop" class units? Developing the Bishops at this point could hinder the easy development of other pieces in the future, and the infantry had a tendency to block the movement of other divisions. The cavalry it was, then.

General Astronelson: Captain Jacobs, give the order. Cavalry to Sector c3.

Captain S. Jacobs: "General Astronelson, sir! General Abcvs has posted a Bishop class unit in sector b4."

General Astronelson leant back in his chair.  "Hmm... Sarah, it seems we have four options. One, we remove the cavalry to a safer location. Two, we make the first strike, taking out the infantry in sector e5 with our other cavalry unit, and thus attacking the weakest sector of the New Zealand army, f7. Three, we attack the Bishop by advancing an infantry division to sector a3. Four, we deploy one of our own Bishops to sector c4, again attacking sector f7."

General Astronelson thought over these four options. Only one of them guaranteed the safety of the cavalry, but the cavalry was already defended by the infantry in b2 and d2. Advancing the infantry in sector a2 to a3 would be ineffectual, as this would only have a temporary effect, and may, in fact, lead to the defeat of the cavalry in c3. Taking out the infantry in sector e5 was tempting... but deploying the Bishop to c4 would free up the power of the Rook, and would allow the him to remove himself to a safer point in sector g1. The choice was difficult, but certain. The cavalry in c3 would have to hope for the best. Although he didn't like to think of things like development when lives were at stake, if the Bishop was to defeat the cavalry at c3, it would, in turn, be defeated by the d2 infantry, freeing up the other bishop, and the most powerful unit, the Queen.

"Captain Jacobs... order the Bishop to sector c4."

Captain Jacobs could see the concern on the general's face. She understood. The prospect of losing soldiers was always saddening.

"Yes, sir. Bishop to c4."

I suppose it depends on how active the members are, but it won't necessarily take that long. You can reliably get in a move a day, at least. Sometimes two if it's a Saturday or something. Four months would be a 120 move game.

4 months!  4 months!   I have you know we will be setting a much more snappy pace than that!

We will probably have this wrapped up in a mere 4 weeks!  16.gif

Tactical!  We are getting reports by the hour of continued enemy troop movements.   There have been no casualties yet, Sir, but we are needing to raise the alert level...   recommend that the Black Imperial Forces Commander is secured to the command bunker immediately!

I repeat...   secure the Commander!    To the keep!

In a blinding display of military precision movement, the Commander moves two spaces towards the Rook and the Rook, (giving a crisp salute on the way past)  moves two spaces to stand in solid defence of his Commander.

The Commander now secured, orders his standard battle lunch...   beef sandwiches (no frapping rabbit food) and black coffee...  lots of black coffee.

Meanwhile the lone undefended infantry unit stood his ground...   "typical" he thought ... "the Commander retreats to the safety of the keep to have a snack, while I am standing out here ready to become someones free lunch..."

However as we know... there is no such thing as a free lunch...  as any battle commander knows,  the big picture must always be kept in mind.

And the soldier knew his duty...  his sworn allegience to the Commander was firm.   Retreat for him was simply not an option.

Sarah Jacobs sighed. She didn't like relaying orders to the front line. Not that there was any danger to herself, of course. It was just that, sooner or later, she would have to tell a division to move to a suicidal position. So far, there had been no loss of life. Deep down she knew that the general didn't like giving the orders in the first place, but that it was essential to defeat the evil empire of New Zealand at any cost. Sometimes, it seemed the general was not acting of his own volition, but was controlled by some higher power. What the nature of this power was, she didn't know. All she knew was, it felt that they were mere pawns in some game.

"Captain Jacobs?" called General Astronelson.

Sarah stood up. Was this to be the order that would put men in harms way? Would this order befall the first loss of life in the battle?

"Yes, sir?"

"We will need to advance the infantry in d2 to d4."

Captain Jacobs knew it. There was opposition infantry in sector e5. This deployment was potentially fatal to their men. Hopefully, the cavalry advanced earlier to f3 would deter any attack.

"Yes sir. Infantry advance to d4."

Battle stations!   This is not a drill!

With the infanty unit at d2 now advanced beyond the third rank, the Black Imperial Forces Commander in Chief saw his opportunity to strike the first blow...  in the now weakened sector at c3...  a surprise attack from deep behind enemy lines.

Retaliation from the opposing side would be enevitable and expected, but such is the harsh reality of conflict.

The order was given, to make a pre-emptive strike deep within the enemies territory...

Captain Jacobs was sitting in her offic when the news came in. The cavalry division in sector c3 had been massacred. There were no survivors.

Choking back tears, she ran to General Astronelson's office.

"Sir..."

"Yes, Sarah?"

General Astronelson could see that she was upset. He knew why.

"Sarah... don't bother yourself. I'll give the order myself."

"Th... thank you, sir."

General Astronelson went into Captain Jacob's office, and grabbed the phone.

With the demise of the white calvary unit at sector c3, the infantry unit at e4 was now at the mercy of the Imerial Forces Black Knight Calvary Division.   The commander wasted no time...   the calvary division charged at the thining white line of defence...

Captain Jacobs was extremely annoyed. Reports had come in from several informants about how General Abcvs had disparaged her. She'd show him.

"General Astronelson! The infantry in sector e4 has been attacked by opposition cavalry. Permission to deal with this personally requested."

General Astronelson looked up. This was most unlike Sarah. Of course, people respond differently to distressing news. Sarah, he assumed, was just the type of person who, instead of mourning losses for a long time, took the anger and turned it into action.

"Of course, Sarah. I reccommend that you advance to sector d3."

"Very good, sir!"

"Oh... and Sarah?"

"Yes, sir?"

"Be careful, won't you?"

"Of course, sir. But I will do whatever I must to help defeat General Abcvs. Even if I must die to make that happen, I will do it."

"Sarah... you have my full confidence."

Fine, fine, abcvs, hold your knights. The battle's not going away anytime soon.

General Astronelson sat at his desk, reading over battlefield strategy. Suddenly, the phone rang. He picked it up.

"General Astronelson speaking."

"Sir! I was expecting Captain Sarah!"

"Captain Sarah requested she be posted where the action is. What is it?"

"This is sector c4! Opposition infantry has advanced to sector d5."

"Retreat to sector b3, Seargent. That's an order."

"Yes sir! Oh, and sir?"

"Yes?"

Hmmmm...

The Black Forces Imperial Commander looked long and hard at the battle field...  and had to wiggle his mouse several times (like a cat playing with its prey) to stop the stupid screen saver popping up every 10 minutes.

"Hmmmm...   so the thin white line retreats...  perfect.   I love it when the other side loses a tempo in development."

He took a long thoughtful draft from his tankard of coffee...  (espresso, black double shot...  with just a little extra hot water.. and definately no sugar.)

He thought to himself...  "I have got a few options here...  but that infantry unit at e5 keeps on breaking sephamore silence with stupid messages about poor working conditions, health and safety concerns, meal breaks, fingernail breaks..  (apparently he can't separate his legos) ... and frankly I am getting sick of listening to his constant whining...     "

His thoughts trailed off...   to reply to an e-scroll that kept popping up like a greasy whack a mole and answer the communications recevier...   that strangely enough plays Abba..  "Ring Ring"...  but that is classified need to know information...  and a digression...

"Tactial! - Command!"

"Command this is Tactical - Yes Sir?"

"Engage infantry at sector e5.   Take out opposing forces at sector d4!"

"Yes Sir!"
