Episode 1 - Edna eyes mayor's mansion
The north east corner of Ellis Valley is known as the Skeleton Coast. This land was home to several notorious pirate raiders a few centuries ago, but today is much calmer and is now a haven for agriculture and quiet small town life. Despite the apparent calm and quiet, if you are patient and look closely enough you can uncover the most devious plans and cunning deceptions...skeletoncoast6ho.jpg

Episode 1The school children of the Valley typically learn the names of the pirate towns from south to north of the Ellis River (Readmar, Anbonn, Blackbar), however our look in on the mayors of Ellis Valley is going to start in Blackbar.

blackbar.jpg

Jimmy Fallon is the young mayor of this remote town, and hasn't really accomplished much during his term in office. To date he is most proud of transforming this messy 5-way junction....

blkbrjnctn.jpg
...into this nifty roundabout...
bllbrrndbt.jpg
Mrs Edna Church, who lives in this up and coming neighborhood is less than impressed with Mayor Fallon.
mrschurch.jpg
She has lots of ideas on how to improve Blackbar, and she plans to invite the mayor for tea very, very soon...

Although there appears to be no BATs or mods (simply ask and I'll tell you where to start), your journal has good writing that makes me want to know more. I will be looking forward to any other stories you wish to tell, as that is the strongest point of this journal.

Good work!

Wow, you've either been lurking here at Simtrop or got away from it for a long time! Nice to see that you're on Simtrop now.

Interesting CJ so far. I like the story, and the pics are nice, too. A nice water mod would probably look better, but that's up to you. Great start!

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Yes, there will be transit maps (how could there not be?) but only when we get to take a peek at the mayors of the bigger cities in Ellis Valley.

Hopefully I'll have time for a weekend update.

Episode 2 - Tina trades secret for streetlight

Just down the road from Blackbar is another sleepy rural town - this is Anbonn.

anbonn6ra.jpg

Mayor Tina Fey loves her house as it is a short drive from The Royal Stables, Anbonn's premiere riding establishment. Tina loves to ride.

roadtostables5tu.jpg

Mrs Mavis Higginbottom also keeps her horse at The Royal, and has developed a keen interest in the mayor's equestrian activities. Mavis lives here, in a well-to-do neighborhood on the edge of town. Her house is the large brick one with the patio in the back yard. Mrs Valerie Wetherby lives two doors down and, much to the annoyance of Mavis, has a brand spanking new streetlight right outside her door. Previous petitions to extend the road to the Higginbottom residence have fallen on deaf ears, although Mavis and Tina are quite polite to each other when they see each other out riding.

mrshbefore6mf.jpg

Mrs H doesn't like to be annoyed, so she has invested no small amount of time in ferreting out a very useful piece of information about the mayor. Ms Fey has been paying for stabling her horses and riding lessons using money from the town funds and Mavis has solid proof!

Mavis has left a note in Tina's locker at the riding school saying that she knows what's going on and that she had better see some trucks from the roadworks department outside her house in the near future.

Sure enough, after a couple of weeks, Mrs H gets her road and her streetlight.

mrshafter7tc.jpg

What Mavis doesn't know is that the mayor is having a fling with one of the stablehands, and Tina thinks that if Mavis blabs that juicy bit of gossip all over Anbonn it will hurt her chances of reelection.

What Tina doesn't know is that Mavis has no idea about the affair, and that, even if she did know, she would never stoop so low as to whisper about it behind the mayor's back... but she would definitely consider using it as leverage to get a lot more than a new streetlight!

What neither of them knows is that the mayor's secretary isn't very good at her job, and actually pays almost all of Tina's personal expenses from town funds. Oops.

So far it sounds like Tina's romance has been discreet - let's hope she keeps it that way. Although she might want to keep closer tabs on her employees...and possibly Mavis Higginbottom.

Next: Trees, whales, and the Readmar Motel.

A political scandal - how can you go into a town and not get one? You can tell a good story. Do you plan to expand on these stories as the CJ progresses or do you plan to keep each as an isolated incident?

You should seriously consider making your cities a bit more realistic, however; I'll give you a few mods to get started if you wish to use them:

Looks pretty good, nice to see some agricultural journals.

Or will it evolve into a big city?

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

For those of you interested in such things, this region has no mods, no bats, no cheats. It does include Rush Hour. This is also my first (and only) region, and it was hand-terraformed. All cities on easy for now. Every city is going to start off with a mainly rural background, although some of the bigger maps will have industry.

The story will evolve over time. The cities themselves inspire the story - and I love using small details that often go unnoticed in the game to create interesting directions for the characters. I'll be visiting quite a few mayors in these one-off incidents, but have no fear - some of the mayors are going to be featured again in the future.

Pig, do the pictures look that bad?? I do like the look of many of the mods and bats available, but are the ones you mentioned compatible with the MAC version of SC4?

Episode 3 - Infidelity in tree-hugging town

This is Readmar, the town at the south end of the Skeleton Coast.

Mayor Madeleine Albright loves her town and takes great pride in its two major industries, agriculture and whale-watching. Readmar has more medium and high wealth citizens than Anbonn and Blackbar put together thanks to Maddy's hard work.

readmar8gb.jpg

Today Maddy is resolving a contentious issue involving two farming brothers. Billy Baldwin owns the farm with the twin apple trees in the front yard, and Billybob Baldwin owns the farm with the orange tree and shrub. Billybob sells less produce than Billy, and thinks it is because Billy has one more tree in his yard. Billybob wants the mayor to order Billy to cut one of the trees down.

baldwinbefore4cb.jpg

The actual reason Billybob sells less produce is because his farm is smaller and he doesn't work as hard as his brother. Maddy, who is aware of this and is also something of a tree-hugger herself, isn't about to cut down a tree just to appease one of the notoriously dim-witted Baldwin's. She suggests planting another shrub in Billybob's yard. Billybob takes a bit of convincing that 2 shrubs equals one tree, but Maddy is quite persuasive and in the end everyone is happy, including the mayor, who can now head home.

baldwinafter6ns.jpg

The mayor lives here on the coast, and her residence is a stone's throw away from the town's small commercial district. Maddy enjoys the ocean views as well as being close to the shops. The mayor's husband, Jack, also likes the location - mainly because he can walk to the nearby Readmar Motel where he entertains his lady friends when Maddy is away on business. This is a frequent source of chatter at the Readmar Ladies' Knitting Circle, but only when Maddy is absent. The ladies can't understand why Maddy doesn't just rezone the land on which the motel is built in order to put a stop to Jack's liaisons.

maddymotel2bh.jpg

What neither Jack nor the ladies know is that Maddy has been wise to Jack's unfaithfulness for some time. What they also don't know is that Maddy doesn't mind at all because she has been having an affair with the captain of the whale-watching fleet who is much more handsome than Jack and takes her to much nicer restaurants. The last thing she would want is to rezone that land...

readmarwhales8ke.jpg

Let's hope the knitters don't find out about Maddy's secret - the last thing peaceful Readmar needs is a scandal!

Next:Romantic drives in Elmouth.

Thanks for stopping by the journal, glad you like the story and the towns I've showcased so far. Here's the next update...

Episode 4 - Moonlit drive distracts mayor

The town of Elmouth straddles the Ellis River close to where it empties into the ocean. The older, smaller, more rural part of town is on the north bank.

elmouth2ei.jpg

Gavin Ellis, the mayor of Elmouth, lives on the north side. He is getting ready to go out.

mayorellis5ej.jpg

He plans to pick up his date and go out for dinner in the southern part of town, and then take her for a romantic drive to Elmouth point.

elmouthpoint4hu.jpg

Gavin's dates always follow the same pattern: dinner and a drive with a woman from the southside of town. This is because he is embarrassed that he still lives with his mother! He always uses the excuse that he needs to get away from his house (which is also the office) to be able to relax.

Gavin's mother, Mrs Henrietta Ellis, is the formidable matriarch of the Ellis clan. She is the great granddaughter of the famous explorer Everton Ellis, after whom the river and the valley are named. Henrietta keeps telling Gavin to focus on his mayoral duties and stop wasting his time on moonlit drives. This of course just encourages Gavin to go on longer and longer moonlit drives.

What Gavin doesn't know is that the second his car crosses the Elmouth bridge Henrietta has her buddies from the Elmouth Women's Institute drive over to play poker and smoke cigars!

<elmouthbridge6xp.jpg>

The poker group even includes some of Gavin's ex-girlfriends, who are all good friends and usually hire a limo for the night so they can all enjoy the well-stocked liquor cabinet. They all agree that an evening with Henrietta is far more entertaining than one with Gavin.

<henriettapoker0uq.jpg>

Hopefully Gavin won't come home early from his date and discover his mother's secret...

Next: Fertilizer and the two mayors of Smith.
