Please help us for June & July   06/20/2017

This month we're hoping for a little bit of a boost this month or next, in addition to covering the regular bills, we'd love to be able to do some hardware upgrades. STEX Collector's Set gifts can now be sent to you via digital download as well as regular mail if you wish! Every donation dollar goes toward keeping Simtropolis online and humming along. Your contribution is so meaningful, every dollar counts! Hardware Upgrades We've received a recommendation to consider some hardware upgrades to our ageing server. As our website community software improves with more and more features, and as we bolt on additional features such as chat, the increased load to handle all these new toys is taking the server a bit to task. You may have noticed that we'd been forced to temporarily disable the chat as we worked out allocating resources for more optimal performance. Following this, we've applied a number of 'soft' changes such as caching options and experimented with server configurations (nginx as proxy, for example), so the hardware aspect is also an area we'd like to focus on. The last time we upgraded hardware was back in 2012, prior to the release of SC13. Your contribution means a lot! Your donation will go toward helping us to 1.) migrate to a newer server or 2.) at least get some ram/cpu/storage updates and any other infrastructure hardware or services. Donate and Get a Gift or Donate Any Amount Thanks so much! - Dirktator & The Admins

      Chat is back...   06/22/2017

In order to conserve resources, we've disabled the global chatbar at the bottom of the site. Instead, the Chat can be accessed by clicking the top navigation tab. It will launch a new window. If you're not seeing this behavior, try clearing your browser's cache.

A formidable family of cutting edge emergency ambulances imported from Emergency 4 (aka 911). Four specialized units outfitted with the latest life saving technology, cast a reassuring presence while racing through red lights to the scene of an accident. This breakneck caravan replaces the game's default Granny Getter with the following randomly generated models:

1.) The "Emergency" ambulance is most common and functions as a portable Emergency Room.
2.) The "Patient Transport" wagon allows EMT staff to provide continuous treatment while enroute to a permanent facility.
3.) The "Response" unit is smaller and less equipped enabling it to arrive on scene first and provide immediate care for acutely ill patients.
4.) The "Charity" bus provides basic healthcare services to less fortunate communities from a specially equipped van.

Each striking vehicle comes with UDI, Night lighting, Props, and a color scheme shared with the Medical Chopper from Fanta's [stex='29336']Civilian Helicopter Facelift[/stex] as highlighted by the included demonstration lot. Since this is essentially an automata reskin, there are no dependencies and no configuration is required. It's a lightweight mod meant to compliment the assortment of ultramodern hospitals available on the STEX and elsewhere.

Fanta has taken great lengths to make his site accessible to English speaking users. However, I encourage you to exploit the automatic translation features available in browsers such as Chrome and Firefox, or one of many Add-ons for Internet Explorer. Mandatory registration will unlock Fanta's downloads and all other custom content on SimCity China. A login prompt and two verification screens may seem excessive, but are well worth it.

Since Fanta spends considerable time manufacturing custom mods, he specifically requested my assistance publishing his work to the mainstream English speaking audience. All credit and responsibility for this download lies solely with Fanta Soda. He will personally read and perhaps respond to any praise, feedback, criticism, or suggestions to this post. More impressive works from FANTA1990 will follow.

An artistic assortment of recreational aircraft to paint the skies over your city with a kaleidoscope of colors. These ornate orbs of wonderment are sure to attract fairgoers from every corner of your region. The folks at Tropico 4 have taken the oldest form of untethered flight and refined it for breathtaking family fun. Since this is essentially an automata reskin, there are no dependencies and no configuration is required. Albeit a difficult decision, replace the default three tone template with one of four picturesque patterns that appeals to you most. Plop the generator lot positioned in the parks menu to assist in your selection. The files within the download are pictured from left to right in sequential order.

Tropico4_HotAirBalloon.zip - Uses HD textures, but requires Hardware Acceleration to avoid visual defects.
Tropico4_HotAirBalloon-256.zip - May be used with Software Acceleration

Eight flavors of Blimps to draw more Sims and Funding to your city's Major League Stadium. These helium filled billboards are a highly effective form of marketing due to their low cost, lingering speed, and freedom to fly in restricted airspace. Originating in Great Britain during WWI, these airships were chartered from Tropico 4 and employ the same format used by Goodyear since 1925. This is essentially an automata reskin, so there are no dependencies and no configuration is required. However, before dispatching to your skies, you must select only one of the following default replacements pictured from left to right:

    _Blimp
    _Blimp-SIMCITY
    _Blimp-SIMCITY-Deluxe
    _Blimp-SIMCITY-Old

Something that resembles an actual Hang Glider instead of a paper airplane. This slightly larger replacement combines sharper colors with a bowed delta wing affixed to a clearly visible airframe. Upon closer inspection, you may notice the pilot doubles as the default game paratrooper. Additionally, the mod corrects a bug that cancels out the pilot's upper body immediately aft of the control bar. Since this is essentially an automata reskin, there are no dependencies and no configuration is required. It's a subtle enhancement that will add to the overall realism of any city.

A gift for your hard working heros at the Fire Brigade. Give your Chief the absolute best in fixed wing firefighting aircraft. This cherry red beauty comes equipped with four jet engines and a huge cargo bay adapted to hold enough water for dousing any accidental flare up. Most cities have only one such tool in their arsenal, so make it count. Used by top first responders in Emergency 4 (aka 911), you'll be proud to park this gem on your squad's taxiway. Since this is essentially an automata reskin, there are no dependencies and no configuration is required. It's an easy way to improve on the realism and appearance of the game's antiquated airplane.

Finally, what garbage trucks really look like. A dull coat of chipped paint, rusty wheels, and a permanent layer of grime give this sanitation vehicle an ultra realistic appearance that doesn't detract from it's form or function. An indistinct logo and lettering are superimposed atop a befitting texture borrowed from GTA IV. Since this is essentially an automata reskin, there are no dependencies and no configuration. It's an easy way to improve on the realism and appearance of other squeaky clean variations currently available.

A much needed facelift for all three municipal helicopters inspired by designs from Emergency 4 (aka 911). The Police Chopper brandishes a blue and white paint job with matching decals and a gyrating inset tail rotor. The Medical Helicopter gleams with two-tone emergency orange markings and bold black insignia on the either side. The News Helicopter boasts a red, white, and blue pattern with inset tail rotor and elaborate emblems. Each bird features exquisite detail including wider blades, distinguishing runners, and tinted windows. Since this is essentially an automata reskin, there are no dependencies and no configuration is required. It's an easy way to improve the realism and appearance of the game's otherwise mostly siloughetted renditions.

  10. FANTA1990 Presents:

A Complete overhaul of public safety vehicles preserving the original look and feel. The Police Car itself was extracted from Emergency 4 (aka 911) and resembles real life LA Police units. A matching SUV found its start in Cities XL and a new Riot van was yanked from GTA4. All vehicles override their default equivalents on both lots and roadways bringing with them active night lights, UDI, and Fanta's own signature emergency lights. Finally, props and two demonstration lots round off the package. Since this is essentially an automata reskin, there are no dependencies and no configuration is required. It's an easy way to improve the realism and attractiveness of the game's otherwise monotonous police fleet.

    Required:

A Complete replacement of default civilian airplanes sharing a common fictional theme. Each model was adapted from Microsoft Flight Simulator 9 (2004) with exception to the Voltaire which uses an original texture featuring propeller engines, and the Crop Duster which was cloned from Tropico4. The planes all sport the same color scheme and logo of World Travel Airlines (WTA), the sole carrier in Sim Nation. Since this is essentially an automata reskin, there are no dependencies and no configuration. It's an easy way to improve the realism and appearance of the game's otherwise drab portrayal of manned flight.  Nightlighting remains intact and UDI is still available for the landing strip aircraft.

  12. 100% inspired by Marsh's Maxis Tree Replacement Mod, I present you the Sayonara! Maxis Trees Mod, my personal take on Maxis flora replacement. It will instantly replace every instance of Maxis tree flora and tree props from your lots, T21 mods and mayor mode plopped trees.

While I acknowledge Marsh's mod has a fine and visually appealing selection of trees, it sometimes does take a bit too much space and leads to undesired effects, making lots and streets look a bit overcrowded in my opinion. This mod was created to avoid this - the mindset was to replace trees with trees of similar size and volume.

Palm trees were deliberatly omitted as they do not fit in every type of city, but you still can use SHK's Maxis Palm Replacement Mod if you wish to have palm trees; just make sure it loads after the present mod and you'll be set.

    Update 1.1

Originally the mod used quite extensively beeches props as replacement but those were unavalaible to download for some time. Now that Girafe released a new livery of the beeches, the mod is exactly how I designed it in the first place. Also flora parameters left in their original state could lead to unpredictable and/or undesirable effects when used with advanced tree controllers- those were corrected to ensure proper functionality with said controllers. Many thanks to blunder for the heads-up!

PS: the screenshots haven't been updated... Feeling lazy

    Installation

Drop anywhere in your plugins folder to enable, delete to revert.

    Additional Note

This mod was separated in 2 parts: one for prop replacement, the other for flora. You'll notice there are 2 flora replacement files: Maxis Tree Flora Replacement Regular.dat and Maxis Tree Flora Replacement Enhanced.dat. They both replace the same trees but the "Boost" version is twice more effective against pollution and the radius has been increased too (originally -2 over 2 tiles, improved to -4 over 4 tiles). Choose one and delete the other. Should you keep them both for whatever reason, the regular version will override the enhanced version.

    Regular or enhanced?

I didn't have the time to test this extensively, The use of enhanced version in an existing region may trigger undesired effects related to pollution. Therefore I advise to avoid it's use in such circumstances. However if you start fresh, you should have no troubles using the enhanced iteration as long as you keep it in your plugins (and do not swap for regular every now and then).

    Fortune may favors the bold!

  13. Have you grown tired of those Maxis textures on your lots? Here's another little mod - a texture replacement actually - that will replace every occurence of these too much seen parking textures with newer textures.

The mod is separated in 2 parts, one for the $ wealth level and the other for $$-$$$.

Also, as can be seen in the mosaic, dimensional changes were kept to a minimum to avoid misplaced props issues, so things should run smooth on that side too.

    Installation

To use this, simply toss the folder in your plugins. I'm unaware of other texture mods of this kind so anywhere in your folder should be fine, but note that a few textures are from the BSC texture packs, so if you use them ensure the mod loads after.

    More!

Now that the textures are updated, how about updating the Maxis cars that sits on them? I strongly recommend you to get the Car Automata Pack 1.0 or any of mikeseith's car replacements available here on the STEX. Goodbye outdated Maxis parkings :D

    No dependencies

    Credits

    - thanks to Jim for the amazing textures which have been used as a base for $$ & $$$ parking replacement.
    - thanks to Shy Dude for suggesting shaded textures

  14. Here is the SAM1 override - a little mod that will reskin your SAM 1 textures and display new props for your greater pleasure! A small variation willl occur on some textures and props (as can be seen on screenshots), depending of zoning.

Not much else to say, but keep in mind that SAM 1, despite how it looks, does not have parking functionality: it's only purpose is eye-candy.

    UPDATE 1.1

A fellow member brought to my attention a problem with the plugin - possibly due to the use of HD props and its incompatibility with software mode. For those who use software rendering and/or prefer to use SD props, a new iteration of the SAM 1 override has been created. The mod is now divided in 2 distinct folders: one for HD, one for SD. Please only use one at a time.

    What's in the packs?

    HD Props pack

SAM - 1 - Parking Lots Textures.dat: contains the new textures specific to the HD setup
    SAM - 1 - Type21.dat: T21 files for HD car props
    Bollard.dat*: small post model
Grfe_Cars_family_props.dat*: turns those bootiful car props into bootiful family timed props
Lot Textures.dat: lot textures for overriding SAM1 - style parkings

    SD Props pack

SAM - 1 - Parking Lots Textures.dat: contains the new textures specific to the SD setup.
    SAM - 1 - Type21.dat: T21 files for SD car props
    Bollard.dat*: small post model
Lot Textures.dat: lot textures for overriding SAM1 - style parkings

    * files already used in the overhanging parkings: if you have the overhanging parkings in your plugins, you can delete them.

    Installation

Must load after the NAM. You can also replace the texture and T21 dats directly in the SAM folder if so you desire.

Dependencies (all optional beside the NAM - not having these will not trigger BB's)

    NAM with the Street-Addon-Mod installed
BSC MEGA Props - SG Vol 01
BSC - VIP girafe carpack vol. 1 & 2 (HD version only)
Neko Prop Set vol 03 (only Neko_Fence_Black_2m.SC4Model and Neko_Fence_Black_2m.SC4Desc are needed)

Strongly suggested for users of the SD version

The T21 file that generates props use Maxis family cars as default; it's very likely you'll want somethng better to replace them.
Choose one of the following replacement mods (they all supersede Maxis family cars), depending of your preferences:

    1960s car replacement Mod
    Japan car replacement Mod
    European car replacement Mod
    Jim's car prop pack 1.2

    Credits

-special thanks goes to Mr. Jim, the author of this excellent and highly recommended Parking set. The textures used by the SAM1 override are based on his textures and inspired me to create this mod.  ありがとう JIM!

  15. Here is a little T21 mod that will add seasonal flora (mostly trees) on your street and road roundabouts.
Flora will show only when the roundabout is zoned, and if it was built prior to the present mod installation, you'll have to click with the street tool to trigger flora.

Note that there are 4 different instances of trees for Residential & Commercial §§-§§§ and 2 different instances of flora for Industrial and Low-wealth R & C. You can "cycle" through the various instances by clicking on the street tool, but the selection will be totally random.

Please allow some time for the flora to appear, as it's seasonal.

Res & Com §§-§§§: chestnut, maple, ash, aesculus
Ind & Low wealth Res Com: bushes (2 slightly different types).

    Installation

Anywhere in your plugins, but the mod must load after the NAM as some exemplars share the same ID.

    Uninstallation

Remove the mod from the plugins folder and click on the roundabouts where there's flora with the street tool to revert.

    Dependencies

BSC - VIP girafe ashes (only the LE file is needed)
BSC - VIP girafe chestnuts (v1.0)
    VIP orange aesculus
BSC - VIP girafe maples v2 (v1.0) (only the LE file is needed)
BSC - VIP girafe bushes (v1.0)

This mod is still in beta stage

  16. NAM v32 has added a new approach to rail - Real Railway - which is expected to continue to evolve. RRW looks great, is quite complete, is usable and easy to convert to. This mod adds a few extras to the NAM set and offers preliminary support for things that can be expected to change over time.
Included are 10 NAM Viaduct skins, re-rendered Rail Tunnels and Crossings for all of my Streets as well as my first take on the Maxis railway crossings, NAM FLUPS and a partially complete T21 set for the plundere catenaries.
The mod is packaged so that it is put into plugins exactly as it is in the zip (i.e.. Plugins/Z___RVT Modds/RVT zRUM for RRW) and you delete that which you do not use. Please refer to the readme.txt file included for more details.
NOTE: If you have previously installed the Rail Upgrade Mod but now use NAM RRW then the RUM should be completely uninstalled - these files takes its place. The Original RUM is not compatible with RRW which is a completely different rail set.
This mod will not work with any version of NAM prior to NAMv32. RRW must be activated.
    rivit Feb 2014.
Version 4 is an interim release adding new features and fixes identified since 2014.

  17. Cascadia God Mode Tree Controller ~by: Blunder This is a seasonal tree controller designed to give trees generated by your god-mode flora brush the appearance of a mix of flora from across the pacific northwest.  It features a large selection of flora, including deciduous mixed with conifers, evergreen forests, scrubby slopes, meadows, alpine wildflowers, etc.  There are 2 versions of this file; one with MMPs and one without MMPs.  Also included are uninstall support files, so that it is possible to switch away from this controller without removing all flora in your cities first.  Tree controllers are advanced game mods with many issues if you're not careful.  Because of that it is VERY IMPORTANT to read the documentation first!  Failure to do so before posting issues/complaints may lead to 'RTFM'-isms.

For more screen shots please see this entry of my CJ.

    Contents:
There are 4 files with this controller-
    Cascadia_TreeController_WithMMPs.dat
    Cascadia_TreeController_noMMPs.dat
    CTC_uninstallsupport_WithMMPs.dat
    CTC_uninstallsupoort_noMMPs.dat

The first 2 are the tree controller.  Choose only ONE.  As the name states, the first also has MMPs while the other one doesn't.  As this controller is made up of a whopping 38 brushes you might not want to clog your MMP menu with the MMP controller.  The other two files are only for uninstall support so that you don't have to bulldoze all the flora planted with with this controller if you ever desire to switch tree controllers.  Do not have one of the bottom two files in your plugins if you want to use the controller.  If you only wish to use the MMPs but not this god-mode controller, choose the file CTC_uninstallsupport_withMMPs.dat.  All 4 files are fully interchangeable.

    Compatibility:
Due to game mechanics there are no such thing as compatible tree controllers. Therefore you must remove whatever existing tree controller you are using (such as Vortext's, CP's, Heblem's, my old one, or a God Mode patch like for the PEG pines). BUT FIRST you must remove all flora planted with that tree-controller. For this reason it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you switch tree controllers only when starting new cities; new regions would be even better. Loading a city tile that has trees on it from a tree controller that no longer exists in your plugins will result in a Crash To Desktop.

    Installation:
    1. Do what it says under Compatibility; bulldoze all trees from your previous controller on tiles you will play on, then remove the old controller file from your plugins.
Alternatively, instead of manually bulldozing your flora, you can use the extra cheat 'flora off' followed by 'flora on' to remove all flora from your city tile before installation.  Note that this removes ALL flora on the tile and not just what was planted with the god-mode controller
    (requires extracheats.dll addon)
    2. Place this tree controller file in your /Plugins directory.
    3. Install all of the dependencies in your /Plugins directory too.
    4. Plant those trees!

    Uninstallation:
If you ever wish to remove this tree controller, you do not have to bulldoze all your existing flora.  Instead simply place one of the CTC_uninstallsupport_**MMPs.dat files in your /Plugins directory and remove the Casacadia_TreeController_**.dat file.  This will allow your already planted flora to continue to exist without brown boxes or crashing to desktop.

    Known Issues:
Tree Controllers are advanced mods and you should not underestimate their capacity to Make Things Go Wrong.
    1.  CTD-  As mentioned above, any flora from an old tree controller must be removed before the old tree controller file is deleted from your Plugins or a crash will occur.  A lesser known issue is that if the file with the old MMP brush is gone but the model file still exists in the plugins, the tree will still show up and the game will be playable.  However if that tree gets destroyed (either by bulldozing or by changing the elevation of the terrain underneath it) this will also cause a crash.
1b.  Sometimes a crash occurs when the tool hits the edge of a city tile.  This can have two possible causes:
1- It's a multicore issue, so set your -CPUcount:1 tag in your desktop shortcut.
2- Your game is not updated to at least version 1.6.38.  Go update it.  Getting it to version 1.6.40 would be ideal.

    2.  Performance-  All tree controllers have a significant detrimental effect on your game's speed because of the large number of items they place in your city.  To make matters worse, this controller contains a large number of small and HD items placed closely together.  These factors mean that this tree controller will likely completely destroy your game's performance.  You can mitigate this somewhat by turning shadows to 'low' in your graphic settings while planting trees, and only turning the shadows back up to 'high' when you're done.
I HIGHLY recommend turning shadows to 'low' while planting, then turning them back up to 'high' later.
    Recommended minimum PC specs:
2.5GHz or greater CPU cores, 64-bit OS with the 4Gb address patch applied to the simcity4.exe file and at least 4Gb RAM.
Tree controllers also usually behave oddly on multicore processors. Try setting your -CPUCount:1 tag in your desktop shortcut if you experience graphic 'jumping' while planting or other issues.  Note that this is not a universal rule, and some multicores actually handle the game quite well, so test as you will because your mileage will vary.

    3.  Terrain Controllers- These mods of visual goodness interplay with Tree Controllers in a number of ways.

a-  Cliffs.  If you use a 15m Diagonal Jagged Edges mod (DJEM) you will have trees landing on your cliffs.  This is because the variable that controls where cliffs appear on your landscape is found in your Terrain Exemplar and is called MaxNormalYForCliff (MNYFC). A DJEM sets MNYFC to .77.  However I have calibrated this tree controller for my own personal use to work with a MNYFC of .65, because mountains look much better with a lower MNYFC.  So have your bulldozers ready if you tree around cliffs.

b-  Snowline.  Both the snowline on your terrain mod and the treeline of a tree controller are modifiable variables, and if you have modified your own snowline or are using a terrain mod other than Lowkee's or Gobias' then you will have to adjust this manually to your own settings.
Advanced users only:  To customize your treeline, open the ilive's Reader tool.  If you are using Lowkee's or Gobias' terrain mods, then open the file **Properties_**.dat.  If you use any other terrain mod, open the file zLK_FloraTuningParameters.dat (see dependencies).  Which ever you opened, look for the exemplar file that is named Flora Tuning Parameters.  The variable you want to alter is called Flora: Elevation Scale Range.  It will take trial and error on your part to determine what value of this property works best for you.

    A note on useage:
Often I see people using my PNW tree controller to just lay down a bare minimum amount of trees that comes from quickly swiping the tool over the terrain.  This is not how a tree controller is meant to function.  It takes time moving the tool over an area to apply the full range of flora; so be sure to take your time planting trees!

You will notice a large difference in the time it takes to cover an area between the lower elevation and higher elevation trees.  The lower stuff takes up a much larger space and hence is placed quicker.  The tool works very quickly on the lower elevation stuff.

However the subalpine and meadow content is very, very small, and likewise requires a significantly longer amount of time to completely cover in trees.  You might want to use the alpine stuff sparingly as much of it is not visible from region view and because it’s HD it will bloat your filesize. (For those of you who worry obsessively about prop pox and filesizes: don’t.  Flora does not write to the network subfile and hence does not contribute to prop pox).

Because it’s seasonal, you need to plant trees about September 1.  Anything planted between Aug 5 and Sept 4 will change seasons at the same time, so you have some leeway as to when to plant.

    Dependencies:
There are several dependencies for this tree controller.  If you use flora MMPs at all you likely have all of these already.  Yes there are a lot.  No I don't care, because there isn't some magic alternative where they're bundled together; it's this or nothing.  Make darn sure you have the latest update of these files; many have been updated since their initial release.
    Flora by CP:
    BSC Mega Props CP01
    BSC Mega Props CP02
    VIP flora:
    VIP Rural Pack
    VIP Fagus
    VIP Aesculus
    Flora by Giraffe:
    Feather Grass
    Sparaxis
    Narcissus
    Poppies
    Berries
    Lupines
    Bushes
    Conifers
    Subalpine Firs
    Larch
    Common Spruce
    Ash
    Birch
    Noweigian Maples
    Chestnuts

Flora Tuning Parameters by Lowkee.  As mentioned, if you already use Lowkee's or Gobias' terrain mods you DO NOT NEED THIS because it comes bundled within their terrain mods.

    Credits:
First, a great big old THANK YOU!!! goes to CP and Girafe for BATing all this excellent flora that we get to work with.  I also have to give a big shout out to Lowkee for documenting much of the current knowledge about modding flora and tree controllers and for all his contributions to the community.
Mad props go to my testing crew, including but not limited to Paeng, Simcoug, Vortext, Tariel, Shroud, Nos17.  Also big thanks to the whole simpeg crew who offerend their thoughts, constructive criticisms, and support on this project.
And last but certainly not least, a big thanks to you for downloading.

Feel free to drop any and all thought in my BAT thread; Blundered BATs over at simpeg.com

  19. Are your trains too slow? Buses too fast? Can't get to the crime scene in time but can blow up your garbage truck? Pi is happy to fix that for ya' with Pi's GGASM...NAM is recommended.

    What does it do?

The vehicle handling in U-Drive-It-mode has been modified to be both more playable and more realistic. Trains accelerate slower, have higher top speeds and are heavier, and heavy road vehicles such as buses and trucks are slower and heavier, for safer driving. Also, vehicle hitpoints have been increased, so that destroying your vehicle becomes harder. Boats and aircraft are not affected, nor is other traffic - i'll change the traffic simulation quite soon.

    To do

    Backwards driving in trains
    Traffic simulation changes

    Notes

Brake carefully - vehicles do a full stop if you hold the key down for too long

  20. This is a simple mod that removes the grass texture of the wind power plants.  It's compatible with FANTA1990's Wind Power Plant skin MOD.   * Once installed in your Plugins folder, the mod will remove the grass texture of all new wind power plants in the game. Any instances of the original wind power plants already existing in your cities will have to be replopped. To change them back, simply remove the file from your Plugins folder. The changes are instant and automatic. There is no need to replop the plants.   ** No dependencies.
