Please help us for July   06/30/2017

This month we're hoping for a little bit of a boost this month or next, in addition to covering the regular bills, we could benefit from some hardware upgrades. STEX Collector's Set gifts can now be sent to you via digital download as well as regular mail if you wish! Every donation dollar goes toward keeping Simtropolis online and humming along. Your contribution counts! Hardware Upgrades As our website community software improves with more and more features, and as we bolt on additional features such as chat, the increased load to handle all these new toys is taking the server a bit to task. You may have noticed that we'd been forced to temporarily disable the chat as we worked out allocating resources for more optimal performance. Following this, we've applied a number of 'soft' changes such as caching options and experimented with server configurations (nginx as proxy, for example), so the hardware aspect is also an area we'd like to focus on. The last time we upgraded hardware was back in 2012, prior to the release of SC13. Your contribution means a lot! Your donation will go toward helping us to 1.) migrate to a newer server or 2.) at least get some ram/cpu/storage updates and any other infrastructure hardware or services. Donate and Get a Gift or Donate Any Amount Thanks so much! - Dirktator & The Admins

Buildings (BATs) for SimCity 4.

  1. A landmark in design and construction technology, the world-famousReliance Building was designed by Charles Atwood, a partner of DanielBurnham, in 1889. It has become the quintessential urban skyscraper, and its construction pioneered the system known as "Chicagoconstruction", in which a riveted steel frame is built, fireproofed, and surrounded by large windows (the main feature).

Sadly, such a landmark went through a dark age in the latter 20thcentury, becoming horribly disfigured, damaged, and occupied by somelowbrow establishments. But in 1995, a program to revive the buildingstarted. Today, it houses the Hotel Burnham, a luxury hotel, and CafeAtwood, a very good yet small restaurant on the ground floor. If youlook hard enough, you just might catch a little glimpse through thewindow.

The lot is 2x2, with a small alley on one side. Please pardon thestrange way the construction looks, but it was the only way I couldthink of to make the little side awning hang out over the street.

    Lot: 2x2
    Type: CS$$$ Growable
    Time Spent: over 15 hours
    Render Time: 3.33 hours

    Have fun with it!

  2. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of those landmarks absolutely EVERYONE knows. The question is, why? Is the architectural style really that unique? Is it really exceptionally big? Do they give out free hotdogs?

Nope; the only reason why the Tower is that famous is because it leans. The tower has nearly collapsed a couple of times, but due to the hard work of scientists, the tower actually stands a bit straighter today.

  4. This is a large radio astronomy dish, usually used to study naturallyoccurring radio emission from stars, galaxies, quasars, and otherastronomical objects. It's structural design is based largely on theantennas in use at the VLA in New Mexico. This particular variant has been angled to look out low along the celestial horizon.

It costs 35000 to build and has a low monthy maintenance charge of 80.It produces no descernable pollution and requires little power andwater to run. However local sims don't appreciate having their sunlightblocked off by the dish, so best place it up high and out of the way ofyour residential areas.

This is my first BAT/LOT, hope someone likes it - please let me know any bugs, etc!

  6. Sydney Townhome Circa 1820

    UPDATED 06 May 2006
This colonial regency style terrace home, was purpose built as middle class rental row housing on Windmill Street Millers Point (between Circular Quay and Darling Harbour). It has long since been demolished, but now lives again in SC4.
This example of very restrained domestic architecture was built from solid materials and was a variation on the still popular Georgian theme.
Complete with sandstone columns in the Doric order, Sandstone quoin window surrounds, decorative voussoirs and oeil de boeuf windows,
it will make an elegant addition to inner-ring residential areas.

Similar, albeit larger, examples still exist in Albion St Surry Hills, Paddingon (on the edgecliff border), Newtown and Lower Fort St.
In the 1845 council census, this home was being let at £45 per annum.

These terrace homes are extremely useful for supplying a visual demarkation between the medium density terraces of inner city areas and the suburban sprawl.

This is how I use them in game, by making them historical when they pop up in rows and bulldozing them from more suburban areas.

The updated version includes 5 additional lots variations (I was never really satisfied with the initial lot and have included the lots based on my playing style), prop families where appropriate and three colour variations on the house: Red (in the original upload), Regency Blue and Sandstone.

    Stats:
Lot: 1x2 or 1x3 on all Tilesets
    Stage 3 low density
    Wealth: $$ 12 (22 when dilapidated)

  7. Ted’s Meat Market, part of the Smalltown, USA Series by JBSimio

We’ve come to the point in this series where the essential services can no longer be ignored.  This mixed lot is actually three businesses in one:  a grocery store, barber shop, and meat market.

Richard Jones opened his grocery store in a large, two story brick building around 1908.  Being a man of little imagination, he called it “Jones’ Market.”  He was a true grocer who took great pride in his fresh produce and liked to boast that his melons were always firmer than those that Melony liked to display at her farm.  As the town grew, more and more customers began to give their business to Richard rather than drive out to the various produce stands dotting the countryside.  They began to refer to his market simply as “The Local” to distinguish it from the far flung farmer’s markets.  The name stuck until Richard finally made the nickname official with a new sign in 1936.  The business remains in the family and flourishes to this day.

William Crandell has operated the small barber shop next door to The Local for more years than most can remember.  Despite his arthritis, the town still stops in his shop to take a little off the collar.  The shop has a long standing reputation as the place to go for news and discussions ranging from baseball to politics.  Only Emma’s Coffee Shop rivals Crandell’s when it comes to local gossip.

  8. This mod will add 33 different trees and bushes to the Mayor Mode's tree tool. They work exactly like the original Mayor Mode trees, the only difference is that they don't grow, but rather plop as full-scale models. Some menu buttons hold more than one model; click on the same spot repeatedly to get the other trees. Move your mouse while holding the mouse button to plant multiple trees.

Note: This download includes a re-release of my original Mayor Mode Tree Mod. I have changed the behaviour of some icons to include several tree models in one menu icon. You don't need to bulldoze your existing trees in your cities, but please make sure to delete the old mod file, otherwise you will have doubled menu icons. Also, make sure you have installed the prop packs listed below, otherwise brown boxes will show up.

  13. Here's something that has been lying on my pc since 2007, it's basically a large corner diagonal building, it doesn't fit into any corner like small corner buildings though, so that may pose a problem for where you want to place it.

Modding is pretty simple, i don't have time nor the patience to test or modd my BATs to perfection.

Also, for some odd reason there was no lights appearinjg at night on the diagonal version, not sure what caused that, and i won't fix it.

  18. NGV International, Melbourne, Australia

National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) International is an art museum located on St Kilda Road in the heart of the Melbourne Arts Precinct of Southbank. Designed by Sir Roy Grounds, opened in 1968, and was renovated by Mario Bellini and reopened in 2003.

One of the features of the building is the Leonard French stained glass ceiling, one of the world's largest pieces of suspended stained glass, which casts colourful light on the floor below. The water-wall entrance is another well-known feature of the building. (Source: Wikipedia)

    This is my 10th BAT.

NGV International is made up of 2 separate lots:

    1) NGV International main gallery, lot size 12x6. Is a Major Art Museum, provides 800 exhibitions and 24000 exhibition tickets. NGV International costs §13,000 to build with a monthly cost of §250.
    2) NGV International annex garden is a triangular lot 12x6x6, costs §100 to build and a monthly maintenance cost of §15. Built as a park, it reduces air pollution by -15.

Both are available in Darknite and Maxis night versions.

There are no Prop dependencies, although the Dark Nite version requires SimFox_Day_n_Nite_Modd.

    Instructions:
Download the xx_DN zip files for Darknite versions or xx_MN for Maxis night versions
NGV International Gallery and Annex are both located in the Schools menu.

  19. American City Bank, by Mattb325.
    ---------------------------------------
The American City Bank was an iconic mid-century gem located in Century City Los Angeles. The Bank itself failed in 1983 and was taken over by a consortium of banks.
This BAT is a scaled down version of the main branch (in order to fit it onto a lot 4 tiles wide) which was built in 1959 at a cost of $2.5M and features an abstract mural on the second floor, very wide, plate-glass windows, cantilevered construction and a quaint little moat surrounding the bank building. Another quaint, but hideously expensive, feature was the electronic thermometer on the street sign.
During the mid 20th century, it was surprisingly common on the US West Coast for bank buildings to be surrounded by water. Of course, if these buildings still survive today, these moats have long been filled in given how much maintenance they would require in shaky, drought-stricken California.
In game it is offered as a high-wealth commercial services building growing on all tilesets and densities on a 4x3 or 4x4 lot.
As for the actual building, after having fallen into disrepair, it was demolished about 15 years ago. A shame really, as this sort of architecture is truly unique.

Stats, links and dependencies are listed below.

  20. Millennium Hotel Knightsbridge, by Mattb325.
    ---------------------------------------
If you've recently downloaded Harrods http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/31736-harrods/ you may be wanting some additional UK themed Bats to fill the surrounding area.
Fear not; over on nearby Sloane Street, a brutalist monstrosity caught my eye, and so I have brought this into game.
When I look at a building from Google Street View, if at a street level it piques my interest, then I'll usually look at it from either Google Earth or Bing to get a better feel for the model.
It is at this point that I will determine whether I will do a recreation, or adopt a looser approach. Either way, there will always be elements of each building I look at that in my opinion will stay or go when I recreate the building for SC4.
Normally not too many elements of a building get turfed out: those that do are either aligned at an odd angle (rather than the SC4 grid), or are too awkward to be worth my effort. It is rare, however, that a building catches my eye on street level, for me to look at it from above and shake my head with a 'what were they thinking' moment.
Millennium Hotel in Knightsbridge is one such building.
It caught my eye because there are so few of these sorts of buildings in SC4; now I'll admit I am not a huge fan of brutalist early 1970's architecture: add the inclement British weather & city smog and you have hulking concrete structures that have gone from a light green-grey to the most dreary shade of dirty grey imaginable. But regardless of your opinion on Brutalism, you have to admit that it at least exudes authority and gravitas.
So it came as some surprise when I saw all of the truly, truly "twee" additions visible from the air....now, with apologies to Mcmansionhell.com and other spoof websites, please see my take on what got the 'cut' from this Bat and why...
    **********************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Hopefully my UK friends can get a bit of a laugh out of this: you have been through a fair bit in recent months.
Now that that's out of the way, the Millenium Hotel is offered as a growable CS§§ building on a 4x4 lot. It is a larger 14 story mid-rise building, which I have made my own adjustments to. It grows on all tilesets and provides 960 CS§§ jobs.

It is a 7x5 lot with over 840+ Manufacturing Jobs. This is great to fill up IM demand, and it doesn't pollute all that bad so can be placed
wisely. I put a new lot up instead of updating the old one as this will get noticed more, but to those who downloaded the Landmark version
you can still download this one, and be able to use them both as the previous one is a landmark with extra landmark effect and this is an
    I-M building.

Hope you like it and will be using it in your own cities

Any comments/feedback welcome, and if you download it please rate it

C'mon people help this lot get stars (last one was close)

  24. The Marina Port is officially released! This port is a concept from the ones in SC3K. There is no transit available since there is no transit value for ferries, so this marina is only for show, but it is a great addition to any city!

    Plop Cost: 300
    Maintenance: 100
